Attitudes Of Elementary Classroom Teachers Toward Physical Educators And Physical Education, Jodeen Thomas

Elementary classroom teachers, who were members of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, were surveyed regarding their opinions and beliefs toward elementary physical education specialists and elementary physical education programs. A total of 122 surveys were used in the results from a mailing of 500. Classroom teachers ranked professional positions in the elementary setting from most important (1) to least important (11). Classroom teachers then responded to questions about the physical education specialist and the physical education program on their campuses. A Qualitative Study Of A Team-Teaching Classroom And A Traditional One-Teacher Classroom In An Elementary School Setting, Johnny D. Thompson

This study describes two heterogeneously grouped second-grade classrooms during the 1998-99 school year. One class featured collaborative team teaching, and the second class was taught by a traditional single teacher. There were 33 regular education students and nine at-risk students in the team classroom and 14 regular education students and eight at-risk students in the one-teacher classroom. One hundred three interviews were conducted with 21 students in the team classroom and 18 students in the one-teacher classroom, with 13 parents, with three teachers, and with the school principal. A Test Of Three Sociological Explanations Of High School Completion, Edward B. Reeves, Edward F. Breschel

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988-1994 are analyzed with logistic regression to test three sociological explanations of high school completion. The first explanation, derived from meritocracy theory, holds that educational credentials are won by academically deserving students. Thus, students who demonstrate better cognitive skills and make better grades are more likely to receive a high school diploma. The second explanation, derived from social reproduction theory, hypothesizes that high school graduation depends on the resources within the student’s family, such as family income and parent’s education level. Students from more advantaged families are more likely to graduate. The …

The Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990 mandated changes in the methods of funding education in Kentucky. The newly adopted methods of funding primary and secondary schools have brought questions of accountability to the forefront in Kentucky's tests of achievement, called KIRIS tests. These methods, however, ignore the geographical context for teachers, schools, and school districts. At this time, the accountability movement has given little attention to how much socioeconomic context influences educational outcomes. Furthermore, there is almost no recognition in the research literature that socioeconomic factors are spatially distributed and thus can be subjected to geographic analysis. The purpose …

This paper addresses some issues regarding virtual learning and the future of traditional universities. Specifically, it considers these issues by reflecting on the following: First, it focuses on the repercussions of information technologies for teaching and learning in "cross-cultural" courses. It critically assesses, via three recent examples, how these approaches influence teaching and learning in the context of international management courses. Second, drawing from the above examples, the paper reflects more broadly on the implications of these technologies: (1) for new forms of knowing and knowledge production; and (2) for the future of institutional conditions of universities.

The purpose of this study was to collect and report on the perceptions of elementary school teachers as to the quality of staff development programs being offered in schools and school systems throughout Northeast Tennessee. A second purpose was to study the relationship between certain school district characteristics and teacher perception scores related to the staff development programs. The National Staff Development Council's Self-Assessment and Planning Tool was used to collect data related to teacher perceptions. Mean scores were calculated and t-test analysis completed for each variable named in the study. Conclusions of the study are consistent with most findings …

Historically, research has placed considerable emphasis on developing a systematic body of knowledge about education in which little voice has been given to teachers themselves. The critical role that teachers play in this generative process such as reflecting, acting and theorizing upon practices that shape life in the classroom has largely been ignored in favor of technical innovation and organizational procedure. As schools straggle to reform and restructure, an understanding of how teachers interpret their practices in context and how the culture of schools influence, constrain, or encourage these practices become critical aspects of school success or failure.

The Houston Chronicle recently quoted a school counselor who blamed low student achievement on parents, whom he called "a bunch of seventh-grade dropouts who can't add 2 plus 2" (Houston Chronicle, 1998, p. 21A). As educators, we see too many of our colleagues play that blame game as we try to respond to increasing public pressure to make schools "work." The logic goes something like this: "We are doing everything we know how, and these children still are not succeeding. If only their parents would (fill in the blank), everything would be just fine."

What is happening at your school to foster parent involvement? Where I teach, parent involvement is a constant struggle. Programs that promise to bring parents into the school come and go quickly; they are never well-attended and the parents who do attend the first session often do not return for the second. Teachers, observing this lack of involvement, complain that parents don't care and do not support the school. The rhetoric around our school blames parents when things go wrong for children at school.

Garth Boomer once wrote, "To deliberately learn is to research." To Boomer, teachers and students are researchers when they purposely seek to understand aspects of their world. As a first grade teacher, it would be difficult for me to find a day of teaching that did not involve deliberate learning. Each day brings novel inquiries, new questions, and constant reflection on the events that transpire. Hopefully my students share this sense of wonder and interest as they learn to read, write, and research.
