Learning About Healthy Relationships And Sexuality For Adults With Disabilities, Vanessa Karjack May 2021

Learning About Healthy Relationships And Sexuality For Adults With Disabilities, Vanessa Karjack

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities receive little to no sex education; as a result, they often struggle to have fulfilling and healthy relationships, experience limitations in physical interactions, and are at risk of being taken advantage of by others. Sommaro et al. (2019) explained that individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) and developmental disabilities (DD) are often placed into one of two categories: they are treated as either eternal children or sexual deviants. These ideas are based on old knowledge and are known to be inaccurate. However, current systems of care struggle to move forward from these notions. A ...

Girls' Education Roadmap: 2021 Report, Stephanie Psaki, Nicole Haberland, Meredith L. Kozak, Lauren Woyczynski

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

While insufficient to meet the vast needs, billions of dollars are being invested in girls’ education advocacy, program, and policy solutions around the world. At the same time, hundreds of millions are invested in research about what works in education. And yet, the policies and approaches that are pursued often don’t line up with what researchers find is effective. The result is that governments, international organizations, and NGOs are too often investing scarce resources in policies or interventions without knowing whether they work. In partnership with Echidna Giving, the GIRL Center at the Population Council developed the Evidence for ...

Empowerment Through Education: A Comparative Study Of Gender Equality In Schools In Brazil And The United States, Elizabeth Hilt

I am a recent graduate of Marian University in Indianapolis, with a future as a high school psychology and government teacher, and as such I was interested in the question of gender equality within the classroom setting. I had originally set out to study the inclusion of women in the history curriculum and classroom specifically, but due to our schedule and the pull of the Brazilian ...

Measuring Gender Equality In Education: Lessons From 43 Countries, Stephanie Psaki, Katharine Mccarthy, Barbara Mensch Jan 2017

Measuring Gender Equality In Education: Lessons From 43 Countries, Stephanie Psaki, Katharine Mccarthy, Barbara Mensch

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Through the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), governments committed to achieving universal secondary school completion, including eliminating gender disparities, by 2030. The period from 1997 to 2014 saw considerable progress in closing gender gaps in school enrollment and attainment in many, but not all, low- and middle-income countries. However, as this research brief explains, claims that gender parity in primary education now exists are premature, especially in the poorest countries and new gender gaps, or gender-related challenges, may emerge as attainment increases. Moreover, the extremely low levels of secondary school enrollment—and even moreso completion—demonstrate that the SDG target ...

Patent Law, Copyright Law, And The Girl Germs Effect, Ann Bartow Oct 2016

Patent Law, Copyright Law, And The Girl Germs Effect, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "Inventors pursue patents and authors receive copyrights.

No special education is required for either endeavor, and nothing

precludes a person from being both an author and an inventor.

Inventors working on patentable industrial projects geared

Authors, with the exception of those writing computer code, tend

to be educated or trained in the creative arts, such as visual art,

performance art, music, dance, acting, creative writing, film

making, and architectural drawing. There is a well-warranted

societal supposition that most of the inventors of patentable

inventions are male. Assumptions about the genders ...
