This paper describes a theoretical framework for examining the behavior of community organizations as social actors that shape the participation and learning of their members. The voices of adult educators are among the many scholars and activists calling for local residents to come together to collectively define and address their community concerns. Accompanying the call for participation in collective action is the assumption that through participation, individuals learn to be empowered citizens. An analysis of research suggests that ethnic/racial group members lack informal access to developmental opportunities in the workplace. Legal scholars critique Title VII law as ineffective in current organizations. Critical Adult Learning Of Immigrant Workers: A Social Network Perspective, Moosung Lee

Why does one immigrant worker get involved in critical learning whereas another does not? This study attempted to answer the question by revealing how social ties of immigrant workers play a key role in mediating critical learning to a particular political attitude. The results of the study suggested that immigrant workers who showed a resistant political attitude, which is linked to the process of critical learning, tended to have more social ties and occupy more important socio-structural positions in their network than other peer workers.

This study drew from sociocultural theory to understand novice physician-scientists’ (PSs) clinical research learning experience in the workplaces. The findings suggest that there are various forms of research participation marginalized in the PS-communities. The structural dimension of workplace learning context, such as gender, culture, power, and access needs more attention.

This paper summarizes a qualitative research project exploring the impact of the first feminist television character, Cathy Gale, of the 1962-64 British television program, The Avengers. Contemporaneous British women viewers reveal how Gale’s character helped them reject traditional roles, incorporate the character’s strengths, and seek out other feminist role models.

This paper employs critical social learning perspectives to investigate the themes of emotional resilience, intellectual resistance, and lifelong learning evident in the experiences of three gay male young adults whom I situate as activist-educators. I discuss how these young adults integrate emotional labour and social learning into resistance work to create counterpublics, which lay challenge to exclusionary heteronormative educational spaces.

This article analyzes how we responded to socio-linguistic challenges in our research with Spanish-speaking adults in the U.S. and El Salvador. Our respective racial/ethnic identities, first language, and insider or outsider status created distinctive challenges and communicative strategies. Using exploratory factor analysis to examine self-reported survey data from adult learners, this study identified three factors of cognitive engagement in the adult literacy classroom: program involvement, focus, and independent effort. A model that demonstrates the impact of independent effort on gains in reading test scores was developed using multivariate analysis.

Through an analysis of how women participate in constructing their identities, this paper interrogates the notions of construction of identity (womanhood identity) as a learning activity among women in Lukani Tanzania. Current dominant theoretical framework in adult education and feminist literature have typically positioned African women as “unknowers” and marginalized in the process of knowledge construction and learning-a link thoroughly constructed both by positivists and poststructural theorists who have called attention to African women’s limitation in participating in learning and development.

F.R. Roethlisberger has been recognized as the ”father” of the human relations period of management. Historically, this period was seen as a move towards more humanism in the workplace. This manuscript presents a poststructural analysis of a classic management text from this period. Findings and implications for HRD are presented.
