A Demonstration Of ‘Regression Toward The Mean’, Edward B. Reeves Oct 2010

A Demonstration Of ‘Regression Toward The Mean’, Edward B. Reeves

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This paper provides a brief discussion and demonstration of regression toward the mean, a subtle statistical artifact that appears in the effort to measure change. Regression toward the mean frequently arises in educational assessment when repeated testing is used to determine achievement growth among students or schools at the extremes of the achievement distribution. This statistical artifact is important because it can lead to erroneous inferences about what is causing the observed changes in test scores. The demonstration makes use of Kentucky Core Content Test data.

Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert Jun 2010

Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

A great deal of research in higher education is focused on difficulties that pertain specifically to lower income students. Many of these studies use qualitative methods and small samples from a single institution. This study uses quantitative methods and a stratified sample of 388 students to examine the effects of social class on students' experiences at four colleges in Kentucky. The results support the notion that lower income students feel marginalized, isolated, and "imposters" at college.

Fatigue Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavement Using Beam Fatigue Apparatus, Sanjeev Adhikari, Zhanping You Apr 2010

Fatigue Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavement Using Beam Fatigue Apparatus, Sanjeev Adhikari, Zhanping You

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures is predicted based on material properties and load responses. In this study, four-point bending beam fatigue testing has been used for a typical Michigan Asphalt mixture under various loading frequencies (10Hz, 5Hz, 1Hz, 0.5Hz, and 0.1Hz) and test temperatures (21.3°C, 13°, and 4°C). This study includes evaluation of different fatigue prediction models (Asphalt Institute Model and Shell Model) over wide ranges of laboratory testing conditions. In addition, this paper also provides a linkage between compression modulus and flexural stiffness, this study helps substantiate the concept that compression modulus can be used for evaluating both …

Reconciling Students’ Questions About War And Terrorism: A Powerful Teaching And Learning Approach, Kimberlee A. Sharp Apr 2010

Reconciling Students’ Questions About War And Terrorism: A Powerful Teaching And Learning Approach, Kimberlee A. Sharp

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The social studies classroom is a place for student questions. The kinds of questions students often ask involve controversial issues that they have heard about on the news, popular media, and/ or their families and friends. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan and the related issue of terrorism is no exception. However, since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, many school districts across the nation have tread softly around the controversial subjects of war and terrorism.

Athletes’ Perceptions Of Coaches’ Emotional Intelligence Competencies, Terry G. Elliott, Jennifer L. Vansickle, Heidi Hancher-Rauch Jan 2010

Athletes’ Perceptions Of Coaches’ Emotional Intelligence Competencies, Terry G. Elliott, Jennifer L. Vansickle, Heidi Hancher-Rauch

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study compared intercollegiate athletic coaches’ self-perceptions to the perceptions of their players concerning a coach’s emotional intelligence. Sixteen coaches and 223 players from two Division I softball conferences completed the Emotional Competence Inventory-2 (Boyaztis, Goleman, & Hay/McBer, 2001). Mean analysis revealed that coaches rated themselves higher on 14 of the 18 emotional intelligence competencies and on all four emotional intelligence clusters. Coaches rated themselves highest in Social Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =4.27/5) while their athletes rated them highest in Self Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =3.63/5). Meanwhile, athletes gave coaches their lowest rating in Relationship Management (Error! Bookmark …
