A Profile Of The Nigerian Educational System And Policy Options For Improved Educational Development For Rapid Economic Growth And Development, M O. Ojo, O. Adesanya, A. Bamidele

CBN Occasional Papers

Attempts is made in this paper to situate Nigeria's educational system within the context of her overall economic development in view of the universal acceptance of the ultimate importance of human resources in determining the level and manner of economic progress. The various ways in which education contributes to the process of economic development are explored. A statistical review and appraisal of the Nigerian Educational system show that given its current level, the system is under-developed as reflected by an overall adult literacy ratio of 49.5% and primary school enrollment level of 63.5% of the primary school-age cohort as at …

The Leaders Of The Future: A Call To Action For Higher Education, Deirdre L. Hennessey Dec 1997

The Leaders Of The Future: A Call To Action For Higher Education, Deirdre L. Hennessey

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The purpose of this thesis is to create a plan for a college or university to use in designing a program of leadership development for students. The study begins at the first stages, discussing the role of higher education as a producer of leaders. It is argued that it is the responsibility of higher education to promote leadership and actively cultivate leaders as part of its mission. Leadeship is defined and the fundamentals of the thesis are explained. Personal and creative potential are explained as the foundation of any leadership program. These qualities are discussed, and methods of teaching these …

The Cultivation Of Thinking Dispositions In Grades Three And Four, Linda L. Taylor Dec 1997

The Cultivation Of Thinking Dispositions In Grades Three And Four, Linda L. Taylor

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Thinking dispositions are the internal motivation for thinking critically and creatively. Successful critical thinkers use theirs without another person directing them to use the skills. Many individuals, having acquired these skills, fail to use them. Tishman and Perkins suggest that inadequate development of the dispositions necessary to invoke the thinking skills account for the second behavior. In my work as an enrichment specialist, I have found support for this view. In this paper I present a case study of my work with third and fourth grade students, which focuses on developing the attitudes and dispositions needed for successful critical and …

Ngc 5291: Implications For The Formation Of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies, Benjamin K. Malphrus, Caroline E. Simpson, S. T. Gottesman, Timothy G. Hawarden

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The possible formation and evolution of dwarf irregular galaxies from material derived from perturbed evolved galaxies is addressed via an HI study of a likely example, the peculiar system NGC 5291. This system, located in the western outskirts of the cluster Abell 3574, contains the lenticular galaxy NGC 5291 which is in close proximity to a disturbed companion and is flanked by an extensive complex of numerous knots extending roughly 4' north and 4' south of the galaxy. In an initial optical and radio study, Longmore et al. (1979, MNRAS, 188, 285) showed that these knots have the spectra of …

The Status Of Faculty Professional Service And Academic Outreach In New England, Sharon Singleton, Cathy Burack, Deborah Hirsch Oct 1997

The Status Of Faculty Professional Service And Academic Outreach In New England, Sharon Singleton, Cathy Burack, Deborah Hirsch

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

In 1994 the New England Resource Center for Higher Education surveyed New England colleges and universities about the professional service faculty are engaging in, and the policies and structures that support such activities. Information was obtained from 120 institutions. As seen through a wide lens, there is considerable institutional commitment to faculty professional service. A majority of respondents reported that service is both a stated part of their institutional mission and that faculty, administrators and staff supported that commitment. However, a sharper focus reveals a gap between statements and practice: only a third of the respondents were able to demonstrate …

First Graders Solving Problems, Mary H. Burke Sep 1997

First Graders Solving Problems, Mary H. Burke

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

First graders become good problem solvers when given the opportunity to practice problem solving skills. It is necessary for such practice to take place in a risk-free environment that treats errors as valuable learning experiences rather than something to always avoid. This thesis integrates academic subject matter, school life interactions, and out of school experiences into the first graders' development of critical thinking skills and strategies necessary for them to become good problem solvers. The thesis explains in several different academic subject areas the implementation of critical and creative thinking pedagogy essential for the development of a sound foundation for …

A Structured Approach To Training And Development Programs For Business And Organizational Leaders, Thomas M. Burns Jun 1997

A Structured Approach To Training And Development Programs For Business And Organizational Leaders, Thomas M. Burns

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper addresses and integrates two issues. Its first premise is that training and development programs in most organizations are often poorly planned or randomly implemented, a condition which undermines much of the potential benefit these programs may offer. Secondly, the paper argues that the development and application of critical and creative thinking skills, traditionally applied only in educational settings, can also serve businesses in very important ways. Towards the integration of these two issues, a six-stage model is presented that can serve to coordinate the process of personnel development in organizations. It is highlighted by the identification and application …

Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson May 1997

Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

From I Kings 7:23, the apparent diameter and circumference of a circular ring are given as 10 and 30 cubits which suggests that the Biblical value of π is 3 rather a number closer to π. However we recount seven different somewhat whimsical explanations as to why this conclusion is overly-hasty.

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch May 1997

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

The Mathematical Sciences And The Mediator Of Creation, W. David Laverell May 1997

The Mathematical Sciences And The Mediator Of Creation, W. David Laverell

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

This article stems from a conviction that while the development of a theistic view of the mathematical sciences is a laudable goal and much to be encouraged, it is incumbent upon us to explore every avenue that might lead to a distinctively Christian perspective. This leads naturally to a consideration of the unique role played by Christ in Creation, and a convenient framework is provided by seeing Christ as Mediator of Creation. We shall discuss the term itself, examine the biblical passages that seem to present the concept, consider the ways these passages have been understood by theologians, and …

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett May 1997

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

A bug tracking problem is used to introduce students to filtering and smoothing real-time data. A predictor-corrector filter/smoother algorithm is developed and a simulation platform is provided so that students can program and test implementations of the filter/smoother. The platform includes the ability to animate the simulation.

The tracking problem: A small computer bug is traveling around the $x-y$ plane trying to avoid detection. We can eliminate the bug if we can produce a reasonably accurate approximation to its trajectory.

We have a bug detecting device which can be pointed at the plane. It can measure the $x$ and $y$ …

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout May 1997

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Having had several opportunities to travel to France, often with groups of students, our trips have usually included a visit to Chartres, especially to visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral that dominates the town. On a recent visit I was again struck by the beauty, majesty and awe that the cathedral inspires. The building not only does a remarkable job of telling Biblical stories and of enclosing a space conducive to worship, it directs one's eyes and one's spirits upward. This is achieved not only by the beautiful stained glass windows and the striking sculptures, but also by the overall design …

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare May 1997

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Recent work in the area of cognitive research in mathematics education focuses on detailed examinations of the learning process of students and how this process is affected by current innovations in the classroom, including collaborative learning and the use of computers and interactive software. Much of this work is supported by the learning framework of constructivism, a school of thought which is based on the work and writings of Jean Piaget. Piaget, a French psychologist in the mid-twentieth century, observed the learning behavior of children and concluded that individuals construct their own knowledge by creating mental structures which explain their …

Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

This paper addresses some of the issues involved with using the HTML, JavaScript and Java to develop and serve a sequence of laboratory modules for use in teaching linear algebra. Attention is paid to the rationale for this approach as opposed to the more traditional approach of laboratory exercises executed using MATLAB or some similar computational tool. Several methods to display mathematics with HTML are described. Some implementation detail and a brief description of the HTML and Java based Linear Algebra Visualization Assistant (LAVA) is presented.

Fractal Geometry And Chaos Theory: From Old Problems To New Models And Methods, Terence H. Perciante May 1997

Fractal Geometry And Chaos Theory: From Old Problems To New Models And Methods, Terence H. Perciante

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Fractal geometry and chaos theory are deeply rooted in significant problems in the history of mathematics and science. While mathematicians have geometrical descriptions of space with its properties, scientists have attempted to characterize the physical properties of fundamental entities present in space and time. The separate investigations frequently influenced each other and led to profound theories, answers, and models. However, at the same time new problems repeatedly arose internal to mathematics and externally in the applications to which mathematics was applied. Fractal geometry issues from these antecedents in response to features and processes in nature not easily represented by historical …

Nine Complementary Principles To Retain Adults In An Esol/Literacy Program, Edmund T. Hamann Apr 1997

Nine Complementary Principles To Retain Adults In An Esol/Literacy Program, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The following list of principles is my attempt to share general recommendations to teachers of ESOL and/or limited literacy adults based on my specific practice running a bilingual family literacy program and confirmed by my more recent experience as a volunteer bilingual literacy teacher at the Asociación Latinoamericana (in Atlanta). Though I believe in bilingual classroom environments, I think the principles identified here are also pertinent to monolingual ESL environments.

Service Learning And Teacher Education: Mapping The Territory, Carole Cook Freeman Mar 1997

Service Learning And Teacher Education: Mapping The Territory, Carole Cook Freeman

Service Learning, General

Since the mid-1980's there has been a renewed interest in progressive approaches to the education of intending teachers1. In the context of this progressive teacher education activity, several distinct, but related, ideas converge and become the theoretical base for teacher education practices involving (community) service learning.2 Among these ideas are renewed interest in authentic field experiences, multicultural education, child advocacy, democratic education, social justice, school reform efforts, autobiography and teacher thinking, and an emphasis on community service in K-12 education. In addition, teacher educators increasingly recognize the gap between the backgrounds of those who intend to teach …

Rewarding Faculty Professional Service, Kerryann O’Meara Mar 1997

Rewarding Faculty Professional Service, Kerryann O’Meara

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Scholars of higher education have long recognized that existing reward systems and structures in academic communities do not weight faculty professional service as they do teaching and research. In the past five years, however, many colleges and universities have found innovative ways to define, document, and evaluate faculty professional service in traditional promotion and tenure systems. Other institutions have created or expanded alternate faculty reward systems, including faculty profiles in service, merit pay, and post-tenure reviews emphasizing service. Based on data from a nation-wide sample, this paper discusses innovations in rewarding faculty professional service and offers conclusions and recommendations.

When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd Feb 1997

When Portfolios Become Part Of The Grading Process: A Case Study In A Junior High Setting, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson, Carmen Dykema, Randy Lloyd

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Formal assessments have long served as our society's most privileged indices of student learning and school accountability. Hence, both learning and school effectiveness have often been equated with standardized test scores and/or grades. The privilege accorded to external assessment has tended to minimize the role of teachers and, even more dramatically, students in the assessment process. Assessments are external tools that are administered to teachers and students. For teachers, this often leads to a tension between their curricular goals and the assessment measures they must use in the classroom (Mitchell, 1992; Pearson, DeStefano, & Garcia, in press). Students are rarely …

Students’ Dropout In Continuing Education: A Namibian Case Study, Vekaama Heroldt Murangi Jan 1997

Students’ Dropout In Continuing Education: A Namibian Case Study, Vekaama Heroldt Murangi

Master's Capstone Projects

This study was undertaken in Namibia, to determine causes for student dropouts m continuing education face-to-face centers. The utilized sample in the study consisted of one hundred and seventy learners (including both current & non-continuing learners), and sixty tutors. In this context, dropout refers to those students enrolling for a course (Grade 10, Standard 10) at face-to-face centers and discontinuing their studies before completing the entire course. It is required from all learners to attend classes regularly before they can sit for the final external examination taking place annually in October or November.

Chapter 1 of the study gives a …
