The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if using Khan Academy as math remediation for fifteen minutes per day during a ninth grade Math I class would significantly affect student math achievement as measured by the North Carolina READY Math I End-of-Course Assessment. This quantitative study conducted at two rural high schools in West Virginia used remediation theory to make a comparison against a control population with the independent variable being grade level instruction only or grade level instruction plus math remediation using Khan Academy. Eighth grade math students must pass a standards based test to be promoted to the next grade. Students who were at risk of failing the state’s annual test faced impending retention. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to see if an intensive nine-week (55 min per day) remedial Math Connection (MC) class for 67 suburban, eighth grade students identified as at risk of failing, could significantly increase the scores; concurrently, at this Title I school, they were compared with 122 eighth grade students who were not identified as at risk of failing. Since the installment of the No Child Left Behind Act, schools have sought strategies to help students meet these academic requirements. Many middle schools have turned to math remediation classes as a way to improve students' achievement scores. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to explore the relationship of the mathematics remediation class as an intervention strategy to help low performing seventh grade students' achievement on the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test.
