Considering that as recently as 2014, school girls Chibok, Nigeria were abducted by Boko Haram, a Muslim fundamentalist terrorist group, one has to wonder about the correlation between the access to education, equality, safety, and opportunity. The College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University are private Catholic liberal arts institutions whose students enroll in single-sex institutions, but are provided co-educational learning experiences in the classroom. This hybrid structure permits the exploration multiple aspects of a gendered education. Given the opportunity this structure offers, the researchers of this project aim to study the First Year Seminar (FYS) experiences of student …

Research@SMU: Connecting the Dots
The word “Management” in the name of our university was carefully and deliberately chosen to address the needs of institutions and decisionmakers across all segments of society: business enterprises and the private sector, government and the public sector, and civil society and the people sector. Unless you are already familiar with the breadth and depth of research output from Singapore Management University (SMU), you would naturally assume that we were a “management” university that was focusing exclusively on business – in essence, a large business school. The reality is quite different.
Through this book, you will gain a more complete …
Principles Of Explaining Lc Call Numbers, Frank Newton
Principles Of Explaining Lc Call Numbers, Frank Newton
Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities
Celebrate LC call numbers if you use them to organize the physical books in your library. Innovate in how you explain them to new students and new library staff. Seven principles for explaining LC call numbers are introduced. A few highlights: (a) All library staff should collaborate in explaining call numbers to new people, with each member of the staff explaining the things about call numbers which they understand. (b) All library staff's understanding of call numbers should be principle-based, not merely experiential. (c) Catalogers should play a central role in teaching about and promoting call numbers. (d) Most people …

We may define and prioritize them differently, but few would deny that our human community is facing intractable problems at local, national, and global scales. We call on higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world to work collectively and with strategic intent and action to use sustainability as an organizing principle to focus service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) activities on the flourishing of our planet and its diverse species.
In the United Nations report, Our Common Future, sustainable development (the future-oriented view of “sustainability”) was defined by World Commission on the Environment and Development members as “the kind of development …

"Amazing, Magic Searches" In Oclc Worldcat Discovery: An Update To Kornegay, Buchanan, And Morgan 2005, Frank Newton
Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities
In their classic article, "Amazing, Magic Searches!" (Library Journal, Nov. 1st 2005, pp. 44-46) Kornegay, Buchanan, & Morgan show how subdivisions (phrases authorized by LC to be tacked on to subject headings) can be used to advantage in keyword searching in online library catalogs. Their first example: college sports and economic aspects. I work at a library which has replaced its free-standing online library catalog with OCLC Discovery Service -- a window into WorldCat which lets you limit your searches to materials in your library. Volunteer State librarians will be pleased to discover that if one reruns KB&M's sample searches …

Reframing Health Professions Leadership Education, Courtney E. Vannah
Reframing Health Professions Leadership Education, Courtney E. Vannah
CETL Mini-Grant Research Papers
As leadership training becomes more common in allied health professions curricula, efforts must be made to tailor training to student need. As such, understanding the frames through which health professions students view leadership is essential. According to Bolman and Deal, there are four leadership frames (human resource, structural, symbolic and political) and although most people access most readily one frame or another, the most effective leaders are able to access all four frames. This study describes what leadership frame(s) preference exists among an allied health professions student population in order to alert educators that frame preferences do exist so as …

Some studies report higher attrition rates for ABSN students than for traditional entry-level nursing students related to both academic and non-academic factors. Student costs associated with program extension or dismissal, or the student’s inability to become licensed to practice, can be high. A descriptive correlational study of 37 ABSN students used Kaplan Admissions Test administered as a post-entry evaluation for identification of at-risk students during first week of program. Existing de-identified data gathered from the admissions test and first two semester courses analyzed to identify potential risk factors amenable to additional academic support. Several variables identified as putting a student …

Concept Mapping As A Tool To Promote Cognitive Integration, Douglas B. Spicer, Sean M. Kilgallen, Rebecca J. Rowe, Kathryn H. Thompson
CETL Mini-Grant Research Posters
For 20 years there has been a push to integrate the basic and clinical sciences in medical school curricula. Recently, studies have suggested that cognitive integration by the student is best achieved when the relationships between basic science and clinical domains are explicitly demonstrated. Concept mapping in response to a prompt, which asks students to create relationships among clinical and basic science concepts, should provide explicit connections that lead to a deeper conceptual understanding of the material. We designed a study to test the hypothesis that concept mapping improves the ability of students to diagnostically discriminate between multiple endocrinopathies when …

For 20 years there has been a push to integrate the basic and clinical sciences in medical school curricula. Recently, studies have suggested that cognitive integration is achieved when the relationships between basic science and clinical domains are explicitly demonstrated. In order to investigate methods that promote cognitive integration we performed a pilot study to develop and test different learning resources. We then surveyed students’ perceptions of these resources and analyzed how the resources affected their note taking. Our study suggests that the type of resources can influence the type of note-taking done by students, and that the process of …

IMPACT Publications
The purpose of this study was to test whether increasing the relevancy of course assignments in a large multi-section introductory public speaking course would lead to improvements in student perceptions of course outcomes. Survey responses from 1,878 students were analyzed to test whether differences exist between students enrolled in classes held during the Spring 2015 semester and those enrolled in classes held in Fall 2015 during which the more relevant course assignments were incorporated. Results reveal that increasing the relevancy of assignments is associated with greater perceived course relevance, motivation for participating in the class, and perceptions of learning. This …

Called To Teach: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Community College Adjunct Faculty’S Teaching Self-Efficacy, Christy L. Tyndall
Theses and Dissertations
Adjunct faculty teach over 50% of courses in U.S. higher education but little is known about them as educators. Strong evidence has been found in the K-12 literature demonstrating the link between teachers’ beliefs, instructional practices, and subsequent student outcomes. Teaching self-efficacy, beliefs in one’s capabilities to perform specific tasks in a particular context, is an important contributor to motivation and performance (Tschannen-Moran et al., 1998). This research advances teaching and learning literature in higher education and provides insight into an understudied population of educators by exploring adjunct faculty’s teaching self-efficacy and factors that influence those beliefs. In this mixed …

An Evaluation Of The Student Experience To Inform Strategic Decision Making In Tertiary Education, Aileen Cotter, Michele Mcmanus, Mary Oldham, Nollaig O'Sullivan
Irish Business Journal
The need for enhancing the student experience in tertiary education has been widely documented. It is generally agreed that students need to be more engaged with their own learning to achieve this. This paper takes an applied approach and examines some of the ‘academic instruments’ that are used in third level institutions that impact directly on the student experience and consequently their levels of engagement. For the purpose of this study, ‘academic instruments’ are examined under the following headings: Teamwork, Learning Management System, and Self-Directed Study. Adopting a qualitative approach, the research explored these issues with a representative sample of …

There has been a continuous increase in enrolments within teacher education programs in recent years delivered via online and external modes. Such levels of enrolment have raised discussion around the theory-practice nexus and whether pre-service teachers (PSTs) can optimally engage with practical learning components via online platforms. This paper provides insight into the potential and feasibility of using GoPro video technology as an innovation in online teacher education delivery of practical physical education (PE) classes. Upon completion of the university semester, qualitative data was collected detailing the generalist PSTs’ perceptions relating to the potential of using GoPro video footage to …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Developing effective methods for improving student learning in higher education is a priority. Recent findings have shown that feedback on student work can effectively facilitate learning if students are engaged as active participants in the feedback cycle; where they seek, generate and use feedback in the form of dialogue. This novel study investigates the use of peer dialogue assessment as an assessment for learning tool used in an existing undergraduate physical education course. Our findings demonstrate that when thirty six undergraduate physical education students were provided with instruction and practice using peer dialogue assessment after consecutive teaching performances, they exhibit …

Research and the production of scholarship is a fundamental part of being a legal academic. Such endeavors identify issues and answer questions that further understanding of the law, the profession, and the justice system itself. Research and scholarship in the legal academy traditionally meant the study of law and legal theory. A growing body of legal academics are focusing research and scholarship on legal education itself, as well as research that measures the impact of legal education on the development of students' practical and professional skills. The impact of clinical legal education is an important aspect of this scholarship. This …
Student Satisfaction With A Student-Written Textbook In An Introductory College Biology Course, Greg Peters
Student Satisfaction With A Student-Written Textbook In An Introductory College Biology Course, Greg Peters
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Textbooks are ubiquitous tools in college classes, particularly in the sciences. Regular use of textbooks to complement science coursework can foster academic achievement and scientific literacy. Textbooks are chronically underused in college study due to high costs, challenging and time-intensive content, and perceived low value. In response, professors are increasingly using textbook alternatives including open textbooks, etextbooks, and wikis. Each has unique strengths and weaknesses.
Student-written textbooks are a less common, but growing, resource used to offer a low-cost alternative to publisher textbooks using collections of student research and writing. Student-written textbooks carry the possible benefits for students of supporting …

Studies of the publishing practices in mathematics education have situated sets of journals in tiers of quality. These reports document the rankings and prestige of only a subset of the wealth of journals available for publishing in mathematics education. We posit that there is value, quality, and purpose to be found in journals that present studies that are of value on a regional level, and that the studies are extremely important to the field. This is particularly important for journals published in languages other than English, and the studies referenced above are almost entirely English-language journals. In this paper we …

Knowledge is no longer produced exclusively in the traditional class-based learning environment. For twenty-first century learners, digitally networked classrooms are the new social spaces where innovative learning perspectives are cultivated. However, like traditional class-based learning environments, digitally networked classrooms need to be sensitive to the social forces of race, gender, and class that will inescapably invade digital cultures. Therefore, even in the cloud, this chapter argues, “difference” as a concept is always already embedded as a contributing feature under which knowledge is constructed and constructing. To this end, this chapter suggests that a consideration of “difference” and its signifying effect …
