Transforming Nursing Preceptors By Developing Emotional Intelligence, Michael Francis
Transforming Nursing Preceptors By Developing Emotional Intelligence, Michael Francis
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Changing the process of professionally developing nursing preceptors to meet the growing and changing needs of the nursing profession is critical. This evidence-based project leveraged an advanced preceptor education program for inclusion of basic emotional intelligence tenets and transitioning them into preceptor self-awareness, leadership recognition, and return on human capital investment. A large integrated healthcare system in Northern California identified a strategic need for preceptor development and within the system two acute care hospitals and one home health/hospice agency were selected to participate. The intervention included the development of a six-hour curriculum delivered through an interactive and innovative in-person learning …
An Exploration Of The Nursing Leaders’ Experiences Addressing Indigenous Health In University Undergraduate Nursing Programs In Ontario, Danae Coggins
An Exploration Of The Nursing Leaders’ Experiences Addressing Indigenous Health In University Undergraduate Nursing Programs In Ontario, Danae Coggins
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Introduction. Although there are serious health inequities experienced by Indigenous people compared to non-Indigenous people in Canada and racism and discrimination continues to be rife in health care environments, there remains a general lack of attention to Indigenous health (IH) in health professional education programs. In response, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has recommended this be addressed within health profession education, including nursing (Truth and Reconciliation Canada, 2015). However, there is a paucity of evidence describing the challenges and facilitators to incorporating IH into nursing education.
Methodology and Methods. This qualitative study employs interpretive description approaches informed by …
Developing Cultural Competency In Anesthesia Through Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Emma To
Developing Cultural Competency In Anesthesia Through Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Emma To
Doctoral Projects
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are the main anesthesia providers in over 70% of rural hospitals providing anesthesia. Each year, over 2,000 student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) graduate and continue as licensed CRNAs. This Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project emphasizes the importance of developing culturally competent providers in anesthesia by promoting early outreach in cultural competence education of SRNAs. Cultural competence is described as possessing characteristics of congruent attitudes, awareness, and conduct that provides and enables effective skills in cross-cultural encounters. Encompassing cultural competency education early in the SRNAs profession may provide valuable lifelong cultural skills that will benefit …
Interprofessional Education: How Curriculum Influences And Develops Future Healthcare Professionals, Karen Keune
Interprofessional Education: How Curriculum Influences And Develops Future Healthcare Professionals, Karen Keune
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The value of higher education is a topic of great consideration and discussion, not only for current and future students, but also for legislators, educators, and employers. A college degree is more than a pathway toward advanced knowledge in a given subject; it is a component of a larger outcome beyond a diploma, it's a job. While the scale of employment opportunities appears to rise for those with a college degree, it is not enough to guarantee security for new graduates, no matter their topic of study. More than a competency in the field of study is required to prove …
Failure-To-Rescue Simulations As A Risk Management Strategy For Registered Nurses, Trena K. Seago
Failure-To-Rescue Simulations As A Risk Management Strategy For Registered Nurses, Trena K. Seago
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
In the hospital setting, prevention of failure-to-rescue (FTR) events is an important aspect of patient safety. The use of patient simulation as a strategy to educate nurses on the prevention of these events offers two modes of learning: 1) experiential learning through simulation and 2) reflection through debriefing. The act of practicing to recognize a deteriorating patient through experiential learning and reflection may help increase nurses’ self-efficacy in recognizing a similar situation in their future practice. This quasi-experimental, one-group, pretest-posttest pilot study investigated the use of patient simulation among registered nurses (RNs) in the hospital setting as an anticipatory educational …
Teaching Compassionate Care: Nurse Educators' Perspectives, Jane Defazio
Teaching Compassionate Care: Nurse Educators' Perspectives, Jane Defazio
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: The provision of compassionate care to patients is a core competency expected of nurses, thus nurse educators must help students develop the necessary skills, understanding and motivation to achieve that competency. These educators face the challenge of preparing student nurses for the realities of healthcare delivery, while fostering a meaningful understanding of what constitutes compassionate care in professional practice. They can influence their students both during clinical interaction with patients and through the academic nursing curriculum.
Problem: A considerable amount of research has been published on the value of providing compassionate nursing care; however, there is only minimal research …
Inter-Professional Education: A Literature Analysis And Description Of Pacer Study At Western Michigan University, Kari Scholten
Inter-Professional Education: A Literature Analysis And Description Of Pacer Study At Western Michigan University, Kari Scholten
Honors Theses
Inter-professional education is a topic that is widely gaining popularity throughout the healthcare field. Because inter-professional practice in the hospital and beyond has proven its value time and time again, universities must take it upon themselves to train their healthcare students to work efficiently and communicate effectively with other disciplines in the healthcare field. Through a thorough literature review, it was demonstrated that inter-professional education studies and simulations that were performed in a range of settings have had positive effects on a variety of factors, including communication, quality of care given, and perceptions of professional roles. A study performed at …
The Perceptions And Experiences On Professional Caring Dispositions In Online And Hybrid Nursing Programs Among Veteran Nursing Educators, Devorah Overbay
The Perceptions And Experiences On Professional Caring Dispositions In Online And Hybrid Nursing Programs Among Veteran Nursing Educators, Devorah Overbay
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Integration of technology combined with the digitization of the classroom requires significant planning and financial commitment for educational institutions. A tension of sorts has developed that places additional pressure on many academic disciplines, especially applied disciplines such as nursing to teach effectively in the new digital landscape. Educators and students alike may find that the ever advancing technology and learning objectives do not always align in the ways they did in traditional classroom instruction. For an applied discipline, the field of nursing education is faced with many significant challenges to deliver high quality and relevant training in shifting learning environments. …

The Effects Of Emerging Technology On Healthcare And The Difficulties Of Integration, Skyler J. Pavlish-Carpenter
The Effects Of Emerging Technology On Healthcare And The Difficulties Of Integration, Skyler J. Pavlish-Carpenter
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Disruptive technology describes technology that is significantly more advanced than previous iterations, such as: 3D printing, genetic manipulation, stem cell research, innovative surgical procedures, and computer-based charting software. These technologies often require extensive overhauls to implement into older systems and must overcome many difficult financial and societal complications before they can be widely used. In a field like healthcare that makes frequent advancements, these difficulties can mean that the technology will not be utilized to its full potential or implemented at all.
Objective: To determine the inhibiting factors that prevent disruptive technology from being implemented in conventional healthcare.
Methods: …
