Virtually all graduate study requirements for MS or PhD degrees include a written comprehensive and an oral exam, the latter most often a presentation of thesis or dissertation results. The written exam takes many forms, but the goals are to test the candidate for technical competence and affirm that the prior program course work has been effective in bringing the candidate to an acceptable level of understanding of the discipline in which she or he has been immersed. Jerry Ronald Choate (1943–2009) had just retired as Director of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and Professor of Biological Sciences, Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, at the time of his death. Jerry served the American Society of Mammalogists in numerous capacities, including Recording Secretary, First Vice President, and most notably as a member and chair of the Board of Trustees.

Passive Vibration On The Legs Reduces Peripheral And Systemic Arterial Stiffness, Alexei Wong, Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, Ryan Gil, Florence Vicil, Song-Young Park, Arturo Figueroa

Intermittent leg exercise (10 × 1-min sets) with whole-body vibration (WBV) decreases brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity (baPWV)1 and leg PWV (legPWV) but not aortic PWV.2 As baPWV is an index of systemic arterial stiffness3 mainly influenced by aortic PWV (∼58%) and legPWV (∼23%),4 previously published results1, 2 suggest that WBV affects baPWV through peripheral but not central PWV. The post-exercise decrease in PWV is associated with vasodilation in the exercised limb.5, 6 Similarly, intermittent WBV (3 × 3-min sets)7 or passive vibration (PV)8 has been shown to increase blood flow in …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this study was to validate the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in a sample of older adults. Participants within two different exercise groups were assessed at two time points, 6 months apart. Group and longitudinal invariance was established for a novel, 8-item version of the PACES. The shortened, psychometrically sound measure provides researchers and practitioners an expedited and reliable instrument for assessing the enjoyment of physical activity.

The augmentation index (AIx), a marker of wave reflection, decreases following acute leg exercise. Passive vibration (PV) causes local vasodilation that may reduce AIx. This study investigated the effects of acute PV on wave reflection and aortic hemodynamics. In a crossover fashion 20 (M=9, F=11) healthy young (22±3 year) participants were randomized to 10 min PV or no vibration control (CON) trials. Subjects rested in the supine position with their legs over a vibration platform for the entire session. Radial waveforms were obtained by applanation tonometry before and after 3 min (Post-3) and 30 min (Post-30) of PV (∼5.37 G) …

With the increasing complexity and expansion of the biological sciences, there has been a corresponding increase in content in the first-year introductory biology course sequence for majors. In general this has resulted in courses that introduce students to large amounts of material and leave little time for practicing investigative science or skill development. Based on our analysis of data compiled from 742 biology faculty at a variety of institutions across the United States, we verified that there is strong agreement on the content appropriate for introductory biology courses for majors. Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

A case study was organized at Saratoga Elementary school in Lincoln, Nebraska to obtain data on what children desire in a garden space. To collect this data a school garden space was constructed and an after school garden club was implemented. Students who participated in the after school garden club partook in the study by drawing their ideal garden. Elements that the subjects drew were identified and categorized into ‘highly desired’ and ‘somewhat desired’.

These elements were then incorporated into a proposed garden design plan for Saratoga. The proposal plan uses Permaculture design methods to emphasize sustainability.

With the prevalence of online learning in education for both distance and campus-based students, it is critical to determine how to design electronic learning materials that tailor to student motivation and facilitate learning. Students were asked to complete an online plant breeding activity, motivation survey and an online learning quiz related to the activity. The control group of students was those who elected not to complete the activity, while the experimental group of students chose to complete the activity. Motivation scores were compared between control and experiment groups, courses, and gender using independent sample t-tests. Pearson correlations were also used …

During Scholar Week we take inspiration from 18th century preacher-scholar |ohn Wesley. As “a denominational university in the Wesleyan tradition,” scholarship and piety are thoroughly compatible here. So, in Scholar Week we tune our ear to the gong and echo of Wesley. It is not just history, but his story, even to this day. In our own scholarship projects we join a great cloud of Christians not educated out of their faith, but fashioning an educated faith, where the love of the Lord by heart, soul, strength, and mind is our great and worthy cause.

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

The traditional sorting technique, sequential sorting, is inefficient with increasing amounts of data that can be stored on computers. Researchers looking for faster sorting techniques have turned to parallel computing to address the limitations of sequential sorting. This project involves the implementation of three parallel sorting algorithms on CUDA, a parallel computing architecture which implements algorithms on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

A thesis developed out of an intership for the Office of the First Lady's "Let's Move Initiative". Following said internship, the author conducted original research on the local level - namely, Providence charter schools - to design, implement, and assess a series of educational “interventions”. These interventions were created to provide information to students and their parents about the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. Over 500 elementary-level students were surveyed for the research. See document abstract for more information.
