Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Global citizenship education is one way to better prepare individuals to learn about global systems, understand their own place in those systems, and act with others to create a more just world. While global citizenship education has big aspirational goals, for this to be effective, educators must better understand what pedagogical strategies impact the development of global citizenship capacities in students. This study aims to understand the potential of one emerging pedagogical strategy in the context of higher education –online community-based learning– for fostering global citizenship capacities in an increasingly interconnected and digitized world. Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Advancements in science and technology are mobilizing higher education landscapes into borderless settings. Such changes also urge higher education settings to adopt transformative learning opportunities into their curriculum policy. Universities are accountable for helping youth build on their 21st Century competences by highlighting societal issues at global levels such as climate change, refugee crises or big human movements due to poverty, politics, conflicts, wars, or natural disasters. Youth need to build on knowledge, skills, and competences to recognize that any crises in one location can have an immediate impact on neighboring countries primarily and the whole world and challenge their …

Global Citizenship Development In Higher Education Institutions: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Virginia R. Massaro
Journal of Global Education and Research
Institutions of higher education continue to emphasize the need to create and develop global citizen graduates who will face challenging global issues in the workforce. A systematic literature review of empirical studies on global citizenship in higher education was conducted to understand the various ways this term is being studied, measured, and operationalized. The process of inclusion and exclusion criteria identified 57 studies. A content analysis revealed global citizenship is being included into higher education through scales of measurement, studying abroad, faculty and student perceptions, coursework, and university programs. Polaris: Guiding Students On Their Journey To Global Citizenship, Tanna Frank
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis examines the need for a shift in the mindset behind education abroad programming. As the term global citizenship begins to appear in more university mission statements and institutional goals, education abroad programming should shift from a human capital mindset to one that promotes the values of becoming a global citizen. My intervention aims to foster global citizenship within students and give back to the global communities that partner with education abroad programming by incorporating a critical pedagogy of place. Students will learn what it means to be a global citizen and how to embrace these values by centering …

While there is a growing interest in offering international teaching practicums to pre-service teachers as an approach to developing teachers' global perspectives on education, however, understanding of the impact of such practice on the host communities is insufficient or absent. This study collected data from multiple sources and, using the Theory of Change framework, examined the impact of pre-service teachers' international practicum on the school and community development in Kenya. Through exploring the context of host communities, the perceptions of Kenyan educators, and the changes that have occurred in Kenyan schools and communities, this study revealed positive development changes in …

Extending The Progressive Tradition To Poor Countries: The Role Of Universities And Colleges, Shiko Gathuo
Higher Learning Research Communications
American universities and colleges have always been a bastion of liberalism and progressive thought. Historically, the academic community has supported social justice issues, given a voice to the poor, minorities and the disadvantaged, and brought to light subjects that are considered taboo elsewhere. Indeed, many social movements have either started in American universities or been energized by the actions of university students and faculty, and often with the support of university administrations. Yet, when it comes to dealing with global issues that affect poor nations, universities have not always acted as change agents. In some cases, universities have to been …
