Dissertations - ALL
This mixed methods study explored how elementary teachers reported using a commercially published instructional unit to plan and deliver science instruction in their elementary classrooms. Of particular focus is what elements of the program teachers eliminated during planning and instruction, what outside materials teachers added to instruction, what modifications they made to the materials, and their rationales for these changes to the prescribed program. This study consisted of two phases. The first was a survey of elementary science teachers who taught the Smithsonian Science for the Classroom units. Data collected from this phase informed the subsequent interview phase. I used …

Teacher Certification During Multiple Pandemics In The Epicenter Of It All, Deborah Greenblatt 4509457
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Teacher certification exams were put on hold as New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis in March of 2020. State officials closed testing centers and school buildings, and teacher candidates began to panic as administrators at their student teaching placements worked feverishly to adjust. This changed teacher candidates’ ability to complete the performance assessment required for certification (edTPA). Concurrently, COVID-19 was disproportionally affecting the Black community (Phillips et al., 2020) and areas with limited financial resources. Based on the demographics of students at The City University of New York, there were extensive health challenges for many of …

Critical Turning Points During Lesson Study: Student Misconceptions Spark Teacher Learning, Krystal A. Barber
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
During lesson study teachers collaborate to design, teach, observe, and reflect on a lesson with the overarching goals of improving instruction and increasing student learning. This article examines how a 6th grade mathematics lesson study project challenged teachers’ ideas and assumptions about their students’ understanding of fraction concepts. Significant misconceptions were revealed during the teaching of the lesson, prompting teacher learning and changes to instruction. The results highlight critical turning points during the process where evidence collected during lesson observations revealed student struggles and changed how teachers supported their students’ thinking moving forward. This article also documents one teacher’s journey …

While progressive education has been practiced in formal learning settings for over a century, there is a relatively limited amount of contemporary scholarship on such schools. Acknowledging the nebulous nature of this genre, my study was undertaken to identify the philosophies and practices of a contemporary progressive school. From the conceptualizations found in Kohn 2008's work on the characteristics of progressive educational settings, this project used field observations and interviews to examine the daily work done at a small, independent progressive school in Upstate New York. Taking Pondiscio (2019)'s suggestion that scholars pay more attention to what actually goes on …

Considering parents as important key in children’s education during the Covid 19 outbreak, it is necessary to explore their perceptions regarding their involvement in children’s remote learning. Data were gathered from forty parents of elementary students in Bekasi, Indonesia voluntarily filled out the survey. Ten participated in semi-structured interviews via one-on-one phone calls. Findings reveal four emerging themes; 1) ways of involvement 2) benefits of home learning, 3) challenges 4) expectations and recommendations. This study suggests that parent involvement must be taken into account as they become parent-educators and collaborators to improve the quality of education. Further research needs to …
