Growth Mindset, Sel, And Collaborative Learning Through Harry Potter, Karen Hoffman
Essays in Education
Since its publication in 1997, the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling have been a source of wonder and enjoyment for readers of all ages. Yet, for the informed teacher, the novels move beyond a means of entertainment and serve as a source inspiration for students around the world to achieve their goals. Obtaining a growth mindset (Dweck, 2012) is woven throughout Rowling’s series filling its pages with lessons of adolescent accomplishment and success. Teachers can use these books to inspire their students to reach their goals through social emotional learning and growth mindset (Dweck, 2012), all while collaborating with …

A Multiple-Site Case Inquiry To Identify The Attributes Of Socio-Academic Culture In Successful Entry-To-Practice Respiratory Therapy Programs, Thomas D. Jones
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Background: Organizational structure and culture have been explored extensively in higher education. Nonacademic factors influence student engagement, motivation, and success. Research describing socio-academic culture in health professions programs is limited. Achievement of fundamental social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies empowers students to learn and achieve educational goals. SEL has not been established as a theoretical framework in health professions education. SEL competencies closely align with respiratory therapy (RT) learner needs and essential professional skills. Attributes of socio-academic culture in successful RT programs and their impact on student success are unknown. Objective: To identify the attributes of socio-academic culture in successful entry-to-practice respiratory …

Educators’ Perspectives On The Practices And Implementation Of Social Emotional Learning Programs, Monica Parra Ballon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This interview-based qualitative study sought educators’ perceptions of best practices for and implementation of mindfulness and social and emotional learning (SEL) programs in the classroom in order to discern how SEL programs foster student socioemotional wellbeing (e.g., self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making). To do so, I conducted semi-structured interviews via videoconference with nine educators from public, private, and charter schools in the United States and Canada. Discussions include questions about personal experiences and implementation of SEL interventions. The recorded interviews were transcribed and coded to locate emergent themes. The present research revealed several training and implementation …

Incorporating Social Media Into The Classroom: A Case Study On How Tiktok Can Be Immersed Into Classroom Pedagogy, Sara Solomon
Education | Master's Theses
My research project focuses on the use of TikTok embedded within classroom pedagogy and how it can be used as a tool to support academic and social emotional wellbeing. There is a lack of research investigating how social media can be incorporated into the classroom to make up for potential academic losses, including the inevitable social/emotional needs of adolescents that need to be addressed due to the ramifications of COVID-19. In my research, I question ways in which students see this tool as supporting their wellbeing, in what ways parents see this tool as supporting their child's wellbeing, and why …

Teach Peacefully: Fostering A Positive And Engaging Classroom Environment, Kate E. Orbon
Community Engagement Student Work
This study explores the impact discipline strategies and classroom management techniques have on both students and teachers. Discipline strategies can positively and negatively affect student engagement, student behaviors, and student self-perception. They can also affect both negatively and positively teacher retention and job satisfaction. A Plan For Democratic Public Schooling, Diana Concepcion
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project addresses concerns within inner-city public schools while restructuring how we facilitate learning in our school buildings. It provides an overview of continued research on challenges faced in public schools including reform policy (testing and curricular changes), privatization, day-to-day structures and how they impact the academic and social-emotional development of our students. By examining our current designs and policies, we are able to identify why and how these systems have not been beneficial to our students, and we are able to find basic solutions in supporting the holistic needs of our students. This project proposes a school plan which …

Why Trouble Sel? The Need For Cultural Relevance In Sel, Julia Mahfouz, Vanessa Anthony-Stevens
Occasional Paper Series
With regards to efforts to imagine more equitable spaces of learning for all students, we are compelled to ask: How can SEL programs address the needs of marginalized, minoritized, and/or historically under-resourced students without deeply considering the cultured context of social interaction and school learning? Although evidence shows SEL programs yield benefits in multiple domains, most programs are based on monolithic approaches that often do not consider dynamics of power and oppression in the context of schooling. In this paper, we discuss the crucial role of culture in SEL frameworks. We propose adopting an interdisciplinary lens to integrate culturally relevant …

Reflections On Social Emotional Learning And Academic Success In Early Childhood Education, Emily Wagner

Throughout my experiences in different classroom settings during my teacher education, I noticed many differences in the ways teachers approached the social emotional education of young children. The goal of this paper is to examine the difference between a classroom where social emotional learning is explicitly taught to children, and a classroom where it is not, and consider how social emotional learning impacted the students’ social and emotional abilities in the context of the classroom.
