Reconsidering Literacy, Audrey Powers, Marc Powers
Reconsidering Literacy, Audrey Powers, Marc Powers
Charleston Library Conference
Literacy, until recently, was defined as the ability to read printed text and to understand the nuances of both the form and content of that printed text. More recently there has been a focus on subsets of literacy – data literacy, numeracy, visual literacy, media literacy, etc. – that recognizes the means of communicating ideas and facts are not limited to the printed text and that there are multiple means which may be more powerful ways of communicating in our world. In recent years, higher education has been redefining what it means to be educated – from a focus on …

Les Femmes Capables: A Supplementary Curriculum Teaching Survival English To Female Senegalese Ells, Abigail Morse
Les Femmes Capables: A Supplementary Curriculum Teaching Survival English To Female Senegalese Ells, Abigail Morse
Scholars Day Conference
My thesis examines the contrast between a Muslim man’s opportunity to learn English versus his wife's, who, in a traditional context, would be limited by social obligations to her home and family's welfare. I look specifically at the roles of Muslim Senegalese women. I provide basic cultural context and teaching methods to ESL teachers. I also provide basic vocabulary lists and lesson plans about important situations such as "going to the doctor." The language needed to complete daily tasks is not taught in general language classes, and my goal is to change that.
The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker
The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Many college programs are designed to graduate individuals who are experts in their field of study, but not necessarily individuals who are trained in how to teach. This quantitative, quasi-experiment study examined college faculty member’s level of training in the area of teaching practices and methodology. The relation to student satisfaction, current course performance, attendance, the belief in the need for training, and faculty member’s sense of efficacy in teaching was explored. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to organize the data using a one-way ANCOVA to analyze the impact the level of training had on …
Understanding And Practicing Self Care, Melissa Hall, Geoff T. Reddick
Understanding And Practicing Self Care, Melissa Hall, Geoff T. Reddick
Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference
Due to the high rates of burnout and compassion fatigue in many of the helping professions, it’s becoming increasingly important for students and professionals to better understand theories and strategies that will help them build resiliency and protect themselves from the negative effects of burnout and fatigue. This session focuses on how we as a department assist family studies students in developing a broad understanding of self-care and in helping them establish practical habits that promote resiliency in their respective professions. This presentation provides participants with practical examples of self-care.

“Re/Imagining Culturally Responsive Educational Practices (Crep) And Effectively Implementing Crep To Meet The Needs Of A Diverse Student Population”, Rena' Glass-Dixon, Shelbie Dixon-Brown
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
The aim of this interactive workshop for educators and administrators is to promote cultural awareness and reflect on the impact that our own cultural influences have on the teaching and learning process. This interactive session will also allow professional educators and leaders to apply culturally informed practices to foster positive school climate, learning and academic achievement relevant to a widely diverse student population. The workshop strives to encourage dialogue between educators, administrators and interdisciplinary/inter-agency team members through the application of evidence-based practices for the development of a deeper understanding of ourselves and how our views as educators, schools and districts …

Supporting International Ab Initio Flight Students Through English Language Training, Ken Byrnes Ph.D., Jena Lynch M.A., Elizabeth Mathews M.A., Alan Orr M.A., Jennifer Roberts M.A.
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Effective communication between ab initio flight students and their instructors is critical for efficient flight training; additionally, clear radio communications between student pilots and air traffic controllers is imperative for smooth and incident-free airport operations. During the Fall 2019 semester, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) at Daytona Beach implemented a new semi-intensive eight-week course to improve the communicative skills of its international students who speak English as a second language.
This presentation describes the cross-campus and cross-departmental collaboration that took place to implement this new course. The stages that will be described include (a) the pre-screening of the students using ERAU’s …
Augmenting Aeronautical Decision Making (Adm) With Error And Threat Management Training In Young Pilots, Joe Childs D.B.A., Kimberly Brewer
Augmenting Aeronautical Decision Making (Adm) With Error And Threat Management Training In Young Pilots, Joe Childs D.B.A., Kimberly Brewer
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The purpose of the presentation is to share best practices used to teach the Threat and Error Management (TEM) framework as a decision-making starting point to adolescent pilots (under 18 years). There is limited research data available on the use of BATD/AATD for teaching aeronautical decision-making and risk management in private pilot certificate training. FAA-S-ACS-6B does not adequately address the strategies and learning outcomes necessary for evaluating aeronautical decision-making other than stating that the evaluator must reference risk management elements of the ACS tasks and develop scenarios “that incorporate and combine tasks appropriate to assessing the applicant’s risk management in …
Students’ Perspective Of Self-Guided Simulation Training On Process In The Initial Phase Of Private Pilot Flight Training: A Preliminary Review, Samantha Harrison, Gary A. Carter, Nicola M. O'Toole, Robert Thomas Ph.D.
Students’ Perspective Of Self-Guided Simulation Training On Process In The Initial Phase Of Private Pilot Flight Training: A Preliminary Review, Samantha Harrison, Gary A. Carter, Nicola M. O'Toole, Robert Thomas Ph.D.
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
As the demand for flight training increases, self-guided training methods for students can be explored to determine their effect on environment for learning. A series of self-guided simulation training scenarios, aimed at assisting initial private pilot students, were created to be used on Advanced Aviation Training Devices (AATD). A pilot study was conducted where participants, using an AATD, followed a lesson plan with detailed instructions and then were evaluated by an instructor. In addition to evaluation scores, participants were given surveys on their perceptions of the experience overall and how prepared they felt for each evaluation. This preliminary study was …

Backwards Chaining – Accelerating Solo Flight Training, Samuel M. Vance Ph.D., Jon M. Loffi Ed.D.
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Flight simulation has made progressively significant inroads into pilot training at all levels of a pilot’s career – typically starting with training for the Instrument rating in light aircraft and concluding with Type Certification in transport category jetliners. This research was designed to explore if significant training inroads could also be offered to ab-initio pilots, those with no prior flight experience. A control group of first-year, collegiate pilot trainees, all without prior flight experience, enrolled in a traditional FAR 141 PVT (Private Pilot license) curricula on track to their first solo flight, were compared with an experimental group of up …
Get Out: Schooling As Spirit Possession, Amiri Mahnzili
Get Out: Schooling As Spirit Possession, Amiri Mahnzili
The Annual Black Intersections Conference
In this chapter, the authors propose that education, which historically has been mainly under the jurisdiction of religious institutions and has been administered by spiritual leaders and attendants, is a sacred and spiritual transaction. Thus, churches and schools are equivalent and have the same spiritual obligation , which is to create in an individual a new spirit. Given the spiritual nature of education, we see the colonial schooling system as a conduit for spirit infusion that provides the opportunity for not only “acting White” but also for the possibility of becoming White by spirit possession. This line of thought leads …
