Educational Leadership And The University Of Guyana: A Critical Look, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

In recent decades, Educational Leadership has been receiving considerable attention from all interested parties and education stakeholders within the educational landscape. Educational institutions around the world have been carrying out research endeavours in order to boost leadership and leadership practice and improve didactic efforts in those educational establishments. Considering the afore-mentioned, this critique paper, which also is a review paper, examines issues in Educational Leadership in the context of the University of Guyana (the only national university in Guyana, South America). The Ethical Challenges Of Academic Administration, Elaine Englehardt, Michael Pritchard, Kerry Romesburg, Brian Schrag Feb 2016

The Ethical Challenges Of Academic Administration, Elaine Englehardt, Michael Pritchard, Kerry Romesburg, Brian Schrag

Michael Pritchard

This book is an invitation to academic administrators, at every level, to engage in reflection on the ethical dimensions of their working lives. Academics are very good at reflecting on the ethical issues in other professions but not so interested in reflecting on those in their own, including those faced by faculty and administrators. Yet it is a topic of great importance. Academic institutions are value-driven; hence virtually every decision made by an academic administrator has an ethical component with implications for students, faculty, the institution, and the broader community. Despite this, they receive little systematic preparation for this aspect …

Evaluation Of The Ge Foundation-Supported Coaching & Demonstration Schools Initiative In Erie Public Schools, Sy 2012-2013, Jonathan Supovitz, Cecile Sam, Bobbi Newman, Anne Darfler

Bobbi Newman

This evaluation report summarizes the evidence of the implementation and early impacts of the General Electric Foundation’s (GEF) Demonstration Schools Initiative in the Erie Public School district (EPS) conducted by the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) during the 2012-2013 school year. The Demonstration Schools Initiative provided intensive support to four schools (two elementary, one middle, and one high) implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics and English language arts. Concurrently during the 2012- 2013 school year, EPS also continued their implementation of another GEF-supported initiative— the Coaching Initiative—using a cadre of instructional coaches in mathematics, science, …

Review Of The Par Concussion App For Smartphones, Susan Davies, T. Sullivan, Sara Timms

Susan C. Davies

There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.

PAR's Concussion Recognition & Response app provides a checklist of concussion signs/symptoms designed to help coaches and parents determine whether to remove a child from play and seek medical attention. Unlike its competitors, the …

Principles Of Leading Change: An Inductive Analysis From Post-Katrina New Orleans, Brian R. Beabout Dec 2013

Principles Of Leading Change: An Inductive Analysis From Post-Katrina New Orleans, Brian R. Beabout

Brian R. Beabout

Despite over forty years of research on theories of educational change, little is known of the change theories-in-use of school-based administrators, often tasked with implementing externally imposed reform mandates. Capitalizing on the unique case of post-Katrina schooling, this qualitative study examines the ways in which ten principals spoke about leading change in their schools. In a city where the district has been almost wholly decentralized, these principals are not implementing changes decided upon by superiors, but have significant autonomy in their choice of change goals and change processes. Despite rarely finding unitary theories of change in the words of New …

A Review Of Victoria’S Developmental Learning Framework For School Leaders, Lawrence C. Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson

In June 2013, the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to conduct an independent review of Framework for School Leaders (DLF). The brief was to conduct a critical assessment of the content, design, and usability of the Developmental Leadership Framework and make recommendations to the Director of the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, on the capacity of the Leadership Framework to adequately support professional learning and certification into the future.

In making its recommendations, ACER drew on two main sources of evidence :

A. Principal’s experience with the current DLF and the ILead …

Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon Oct 2013

Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon

Suzanne Mellor

Many claims are made in the popular press and in professional education literature about the potential role of the social web for increasing the active civic engagement of young citizens, by either using it as a source of information or as a participatory tool. Empirical evidence supporting such claims is sparse and contested. Moreover, the impact of a young person’s general learning experience, especially that involving Web2, is rarely considered in terms of young people’s likely or actual active civic engagement. The Australian pilot research project Networking Young Citizens, supported by Monash University, examined the ways in which Web2 was …

Public School Religion Education And The 'Hot Potato' Of Religious Diversity, Cathy Byrne Oct 2013

Public School Religion Education And The 'Hot Potato' Of Religious Diversity, Cathy Byrne

Dr Cathy Byrne

Religiously marked intercultural conflict is on the rise in Australia (HREOC, 2007; Dreher, 2006). In addition, intolerant and religiously discriminating sentiment has re-emerged in Australia's debate on migration (Schech & Haggis, 2001; Cratchley, 2007). However, inter-religious education as a remedy is not a high priority. Independent and governmental reviews recommend intercultural and interfaith education to address ignorance and intolerance (Erebus, 2006; HREOC, 2004). Australia appears more focused on the development of values and citizenship courses which assume shared heritage and promote uniformity ( Halafoff, 2006). In public education, religious diversity is a 'hot potato' — no one wants to touch …

Building Leadership Capacity For Development And Sharing Of Mathematics Learning Resources Across Disciplines And Universities, Anne Porter, Sue Denny Dec 2012

Building Leadership Capacity For Development And Sharing Of Mathematics Learning Resources Across Disciplines And Universities, Anne Porter, Sue Denny

Associate Professor Anne Porter

Executive Summary
Mathematical and statistical skills underpin students’ success in many university courses. Australia wide there are challenges faced by every tertiary institution as students enter the university with diverse mathematics backgrounds and skills. Inadequate mathematical skills leave students ill equipped to handle the mathematics rich courses in which they enroll. These students need mathematics learning support that is often difficult to provide due to scarce resources. To address this issue the University of Wollongong (UoW) has developed the necessary infrastructure and initiated a Share World collection of mathematics and statistics learning support video resources. These resources, available under a …

A Southern Progressive: M. A. Cassidy And The Lexington Schools, 1886-1928, Richard E. Day Dec 2010

A Southern Progressive: M. A. Cassidy And The Lexington Schools, 1886-1928, Richard E. Day

Richard E. Day

The 42-year career of M. A. Cassidy exemplifies the transition of public school leadership in Kentucky from non-educators who held religious-political ideologies to professional progressive educators who sought to make Kentucky schools more efficient through expertise and scientific management. This concept was fully adopted in Section 183 of the Kentucky Constitution (1891) which required the General Assembly to “provide for an efficient system of common schools throughout the state.” Confident that professional educators were best suited to devise solutions to social problems, and justified by the twin notions of equality of educational opportunity and meritocracy, Cassidy was part of a …

Collaboration: Advocacy For School Change, Cynthia Strong Aug 2007

Collaboration: Advocacy For School Change, Cynthia Strong

Cynthia Strong

Adolescent literacy is a looming issue in secondary schools. Being able to read, comprehend, and write is imperative for students to understand the content of their classes and textbooks. According to Michael Kamil, professor of psychological studies in education and learning at Stanford University, "we almost need a trauma center to take care of this problem, it's that serious for kids that can't read...It's the number-one factor standing in the way of their graduating" (Manzo-Kennedy). Given the importance of literacy, this article provides a story of how a high school media specialist on the east coast sought to collaborate with …
