Individual And Enterprise Investment In Learning In A Rapidly Changing Economy, Gerald Burke, Mike Long, Jeff Malley, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This paper reports on research undertaken to examine factors that inhibit or promote investment in learning. The context is the rapidly changing economy with a number of features that increase the need for ongoing learning but reduce the likelihood of it being accessed.

International Student Assessment For The New Millennium, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

The author briefly describes the OECD initiated project, 'Program for International Student Assessment' (PISA), in which over 100,000 15 year old students from 4000 schools in 26 countries will participate. A major focus of the project is the assessment of wider knowledge, skills and competencies in literacy, mathematics and science areas.

Assessment In Primary Schools, John Ainley Dec 1997

Assessment In Primary Schools, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

This chapter focuses on one of the elements that has been brought to centre stage by restructuring processes, assessment. It discusses the breadth of evidence used by modern primary teachers to establish the extent to which student learning has occurred, including observations, portfolios, projects, and paper and pen testing. It argues that for assessment to inform teachers about student learning proper interpretation of the data must occur, which includes reference to other pupils' performances, whether or not specific criteria have been achieved or how this piece of work measures up to other work that the student has done. It discusses …

Improving Teaching: A Case For Cases, Hilary Hollingsworth, David Clarke Dec 1997

Improving Teaching: A Case For Cases, Hilary Hollingsworth, David Clarke

Dr Hilary Hollingsworth

Other professions make extensive use of the study of cases for professional development. This article points out the particular virtues which a case-based (as opposed to principles- based) approach adds to a comprehensive professional development program.

Actual And Ideal Principal Interpersonal Behaviour, John Cresswell, D Fisher Dec 1997

Actual And Ideal Principal Interpersonal Behaviour, John Cresswell, D Fisher

Dr John Cresswell

This study of school environment compared teachers' actual and ideal perceptions of principals' interpersonal behaviour. The article describes the development and validation of the Principal Interaction Questionnaire (PIQ), and reports profiles of mean scores obtained for teachers' perceptions of actual and ideal principals' interpersonal behaviour. The study showed that there was a number of significant differences between perceptions of actual and ideal interpersonal behaviour of principals.

Schools And The Social Development Of Young Australians, John Ainley, Margaret Batten, Cherry Collins, Graeme Withers Dec 1997

Schools And The Social Development Of Young Australians, John Ainley, Margaret Batten, Cherry Collins, Graeme Withers

Dr John Ainley

This study was designed to investigate systematically how Australian schools provide for the social development of young people. The report presents a picture of the responses of young Australians to questions about how importantly they regard issues concerned with relating to others, community well-being, social rules and conventions, how interested they are in continued learning, their self confidence and their sense of optimism for the future.

Acer Conquest: Generalised Item Response Modelling Software, Margaret Wu, Ray Adams, M Wilson Dec 1997

Acer Conquest: Generalised Item Response Modelling Software, Margaret Wu, Ray Adams, M Wilson

Prof Ray Adams

ACER Conquest is a computer program for fitting item response and latent regression models. It provides a comprehensive and flexible range of item response models to analysts, allowing them to examine the properties of performance assessment, traditional assessments and rating scales. This manual examines ACER ConQuest in detail, includes a tutorial and coverage of technical matters.

'Absolutely Worth The Effort!' The Final Report Of The Adult Numeracy And Mathematics On Line (Anamol) Project., B Marr, B Johnston, Dave Tout Dec 1997

'Absolutely Worth The Effort!' The Final Report Of The Adult Numeracy And Mathematics On Line (Anamol) Project., B Marr, B Johnston, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

By utilising on-line communication technology, The ANAMOL project aimed to address the problems of numeracy teachers who often work in isolated situations. Teachers from four states communicated both on a weekly basis using 'chat' technology, and irregularly via web- based discussion forum. Through these discussions, teaching materials were written, trialled, refined and published on a newly- developed website. This report documents the action research methodology used, the project outcomes and implications and recommendations for further on-line professional development.

Longitudinal Research And Participation In Further Education, John Ainley, Michael Long

Dr John Ainley

Changes in patterns of participation in further education, using longitudinal studies of change in achievement over time, are examined. The studies have found increased participation in higher education, and stability in the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) level of participation.

Measuring Individual Differences In Change With Multidimensional Rasch Models, W Wang, M Wilson, Ray Adams Dec 1997

Measuring Individual Differences In Change With Multidimensional Rasch Models, W Wang, M Wilson, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

Item response models have been developed to explore change measurement, including those proposed by Fischer and his colleagues. In this article the authors propose another multidimensional Rasch model, the multidimensional random coefficient multinomial logit (MRCML) model. All these models are briefly reviewed and compared. The MRCML can be applied to not only polytomous items but also investigation of variations in item difficulties. Based on variations in difficulties across occasions and items, five kinds of models are proposed. Some simulation studies were conducted to examine parameter recovery of the MRCML model under various testing situations. All the parameters were recovered very …
