Contextual Learning For A Global Economy: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Career Technical Centers And Two Machine-Tool Manufacturing Businesses, Jennifer L. Harrison
Dissertations
This qualitative method research dissertation explored the reactions, insights, and current business practices as they pertained to effectively training workers in areas such as problem-solving, higher order thinking and customer service. This body of work examined both changing economic shifts and global paradigms as well as how a systems thinking approach can help educators prepare students for the 21st century and beyond by implementing action research-based methodologies through effective professional learning communities. The problems to which this study addressed were namely (1) to what extent and in what way are there disparities and similarities between career and technical education settings …
The Influence Of Career-Technical Student Organizations On Non-Traditional And Traditional Community College Students, Suzanne Lee Johnson
The Influence Of Career-Technical Student Organizations On Non-Traditional And Traditional Community College Students, Suzanne Lee Johnson
Dissertations
Student organizations have been contributing to adult education for years. The need to recruit non-traditional students and retain them is very important to the financial support of the career and technical program. If a career-technical student organization (CTSO) can encourage retention and completion of traditional and non-traditional students in a field of study, the state might realize the need to increase the funding provided to the advisers/instructors of the CTSO and the financial support of the CTSO. This study investigated what motivates a student to become an active member in a CTSO and to what extent the CTSO contributed to …

Strategizing For The Future, Pamela L. Eddy, Jaime Lester
School of Education Book Chapters
This final chapter reviews strategies that community colleges can use to address issues of gender and create more equitable and pluralistic environments. It also discusses the need for research that examines the intersection between social identities and community college mission, culture, and environment.
College Governance Greater Than Before: Modernization & Simplification Through Web 2.0 Technologies, Jeffrey R. Bickford
College Governance Greater Than Before: Modernization & Simplification Through Web 2.0 Technologies, Jeffrey R. Bickford
CCLA Capstone Projects
There were several tools available to governance members that didn’t quite match the needs. The College has a successful portal environment, but the groups featured within the portal were cumbersome to navigate. Email was heavily used and was beginning to grow into a problem due to the volume of messages. Tracking revisions of documents in email is also problematic. A college network shared drive was available but often people forgot to check for new documents which led to updates being emailed. The shared drive was also difficult to connect to from off campus. It was time for a new tool …

Gendered Leadership: An Organizational Perspective, Pamela L. Eddy, Elizabeth M. Cox
School of Education Book Chapters
This chapter provides a portrait of women's representation in the leadership ranks of community colleges and reviews data on how six women presidents talk about their lived experiences at the helm of their institutions. Findings indicate an uneven playing field for women on their way to a presidency.
Differences By Degrees: Providing Services To Adult Students Based On Degree Level Pursued, Kathy L. Rix
Differences By Degrees: Providing Services To Adult Students Based On Degree Level Pursued, Kathy L. Rix
Dissertations
This study examined the perception of adult students pursuing different degree levels (bachelor, master, doctoral) to determine if there are differences in their needs for support services. A two-part, mixed methods design was used, consisting of an online survey and follow-up interviews with a small subset (13) of the survey respondents.
A survey instrument was developed with 44 dependent variables covering services, as determined from the literature, that could be most important to adult students. The online survey was distributed to 2,029 adult students at a Midwestern, doctoral, research intensive university. Criteria for selection as part of the population required …

I take this project seriously, this COBI. It is, for me, the most unconventional, sound, and forceful project at CUNY. The project is unconventional: it flies in the face of prevailing winds that make us to attend to depersonalized gerunds and reified nouns: teaching, learning assessment; to outcomes, summations, totals that signal failures, deficiencies; to inabilities that signal impossibilities. Failure rates, killer courses, remediation, that can level the faint at heart.
Reflections Of Women Leading Community Colleges, Pamela L. Eddy
Reflections Of Women Leading Community Colleges, Pamela L. Eddy
School of Education Articles
As the “people’s college,” community colleges have a reputation of being more welcoming of women — as students, faculty, and administrators (Townsend & Twombly, 2006). However, the current percentage of women leading community colleges, which is hovering at 29% (American Council on Education, 2007), begs the question of why parity is not witnessed at the helm of these colleges, especially when 57% of community college students are women (NCES, 2004). The present phenomenological study investigates the positions six women presidents hold, critical incidents that have impacted their career decisions, the role of mentoring, and how these leaders are encouraging others …

A Study Of Persistence Factors Of Nontraditional Students Enrolled In Noncredit Information Technology Programs In The Advantage Valley Community College Consortium, Steven L. Brown
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
As continuing education divisions of college’s noncredit programs assume a greater role to help develop workforce job skills, it is important to understand what factors affect student persistence. There have been no studies on nontraditional student persistence in noncredit information technology training programs. This study examined non-traditional students enrolled in noncredit information technology (IT) programs in the Advantage Valley Consortium in the state of West Virginia. The study was conducted to determine if the demographic factors that were identified in the literature as adversely affecting non-traditional students pursuing credit programs of study also affected students enrolled in noncredit IT programs …
Understanding And Application Of Learning College Concepts Among Community College Support Staff Employees, Laura E. Weidner
Understanding And Application Of Learning College Concepts Among Community College Support Staff Employees, Laura E. Weidner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on the Learning College indicates that everyone in the college must support learning. There have not been previous studies that centered on whether or not support staff, a major constituency group in community colleges, participates in supporting learning. This adapted phenomenological study examined staff in a Learning College to determine their understanding and application of the Learning College concept. Three research questions addressed how these employees understand the concept, perceive their roles, and apply Learning College principles. The study was conducted in a theoretical framework combining Learning College, change, and organizational culture theories. Data were collected from a purposive …
Student Satisfaction With Online Learning Effectiveness At A Connecticut Community College, Alina R. Payne
Student Satisfaction With Online Learning Effectiveness At A Connecticut Community College, Alina R. Payne
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In recent years, institutions of higher education have dramatically increased the number of online courses and degree programs offered to students, and yet it remains unclear what factors determine student satisfaction with online course and instructor effectiveness. Accordingly, the purpose of this exploratory correlation study was to examine how factors related to courses and instructors contributed to student perceptions of course quality (CQ) and instructor effectiveness (IE). Six stepwise regression procedures assessed the effects of specific course and instructor characteristics on perceptions of CQ and IE across one year of course evaluation data collected in a northeastern 2-year college. Results …
