Connecting The Dots: Nonresident Vacationer Characteristics Of Popular Travel Corridors, Christine Oschell, Lee Rademaker, Norma Nickerson

This report highlights travel corridors and characteristics of Montana vacationers. Seven distinct groups of people based on their entry and exit points to Montana emerged from the data. Each group is described in terms of demographics, attractions to the state, activities engaged in while visiting and how many of each group visited Montana by quarter.

There is a wide variety of recreation and tourism activities on farms and ranches, ranging from Fish, Wildlife and Parks Block Management to cabin rentals to horseback rides. This report looks at how the economy of Montana and the entire Mountain West has been changing since the 1970s. Extractive natural resource industries are no longer as important to the economy as they may once have been. Other industries, services in particular, have become relatively more important in terms of employment and earnings in the state. Nonresident travel accounts for 7.5% of total employment (over 45,900 jobs) in Montana.
