DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
This study explored Filipino cultural values reflected in the visual identity of carinderias and examined their sociocultural and psychological significance within Filipino society. Known for serving lutong bahay (home-cooked meals), carinderias have long been embedded in Filipino culture, embodying values such as bayanihan (community spirit), kapwa (shared identity), and resilience while fostering community connections through food. Grounded in the framework of Pantayong Pananaw, the study investigated how these cultural and psychological values shape the identity and perception of carinderias. Focusing on selected small carinderias in Cavite, the research analyzed their cultural relevance, visual identity, and sociopsychological dimensions. Findings revealed …

Media serves as a powerful medium for shaping cultural norms and self-perception. Despite increasing visibility in Philippine media, LGBTQ+ representation remains dominated by metropolitan-centric narratives and reductive tropes that overlook the nuanced realities of provincial queer life. The study explored how BEKIZINE, a community-centered zine created by and for LGBTQ+ individuals aged 18–30 in Cavite, can serve as alternative media for self-expression, community building, and historical preservation. Adopting a practice-based, mixed-methods approach, the study integrates Queer Theory, Safe Space Theory, and Alternative Media Theory through semi-structured interviews with local queer artists and individuals, followed by zine launch evaluation surveys. Qualitative …

DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
This research critiques the contemporary digital landscape, as social media influencers shape Gen Z's consumer behavior, often driving "status overconsumption," the repetitive purchase of trending goods to enhance social standing. The study investigates the complex relationship between social media exposure and consumption patterns among affluent Gen Z (ages 13 to 28) in Laguna, Makati, Taguig, and Quezon City, Philippines. Its objective is to address the environmental consequences of these behaviors, including excess waste and carbon emissions from production and related industries, which consumers often overlook. Grounded in social comparison and status consumption theories, the research utilizes a sequential mixed-methods triangulation …

The practice of anik-anik culture remains relevant and prominent among Filipinos, especially among Gen Z. Decorating, collecting, and preserving miscellaneous items as an extension of one’s identity and memory exemplifies the Filipino maximalist aesthetic. In context, Filipinos are naturally inclined to be maximalists, driven by the desire to connect and the tendency to fill empty spaces, hence the aesthetic of Filipino maximalism. Usually, this is evidenced in, but not limited to, consumption and fashion practices. Correspondingly, its current practices have also sparked discussions about the effects of consumerism and the dilution of the origins of anik-anik, which is deeply rooted …

“Shh!” Bleaching As An Auto-Destructive Art Method Of Representing The Silencing Of Women, Kristelle Tenero De Leon
DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
This paper discusses the artistic representation of the muffling of women’s voices and the culture of silence through a theoretically auto-destructive method of artmaking—bleaching using mark-making on textile. Through studio art research, the reductive and erasing properties of bleaching agents are used by bleaching printed images of women in fabric to metaphorically represent and articulate the existence of silencing imposed upon women. Guided by the lens of feminism and Gustav Merger’s manifesto of auto-destructive art, this work presents the artistic images of 13 women across Philippine history—from the babaylans to Maria Ressa—on textile, imbued with bleaching effects. Moreover, the work …

Kapwa Beckett: Co-Performance, Pakikipagkapwa, And Relational Meaning-Making In Philippine Stagings Of Samuel Beckett, Christian Gabriel Tolentino
DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
This reflective-practice study examines how kapwa and pakikipagkapwa emerged through translation, rehearsal, staging, and reception in three Philippine productions of Samuel Beckett: Endgame (2016), Happy Days (2019), and the devised classroom piece Beckett, Godot & Us Waiting (2023). Using comparative production analysis and a dialogical co-performance orientation drawn from Dwight Conquergood, I analyze rehearsal exercises, adaptation notes, production materials, staging decisions, and remembered performer-audience encounters. The analysis identifies distinct relational practices across the productions: collaborative localization and sensory dramaturgy in Endgame; negotiated media adaptation and mediated intimacy in Happy Days; and devising, Meisner repetition, physical trust, and shared post-pandemic waiting …

With portable digital devices imposing themselves on the already precarious attention span of the Filipino youth, and with raising concerns about degrading literacy of schoolchildren, it is imperative to find creative and entertaining means to inspire the young studentry to engage in dedicated educational materials. This paper explains the methods being used by a small group of artists, scientists and writers to create content for “science entertainment” in comics format. By combining principles of conceptual compression, knowledge indexing and low-elaboration persuasion techniques to develop knowledge “anchors”, the team aims to generate participatory engagement among readers and stimulate their cognitive innovation. …

Indigenous Pedagogies As An Arts-Based Framework For Education 4.0, Andylyn Simeon
DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
While Education 4.0 promises to cultivate 21st-century skills like creativity and critical thinking, the reality often falls short. Current frameworks are heavily technocentric, prioritizing digital tools and measurable data over the communal, emotional, and spiritual depth that true learning requires. This paper argues that we can restore balance to this digital shift by looking toward Indigenous Pedagogies (IPs). Far from being “obsolete” relics of the past, these are sophisticated, arts-based systems rooted in storytelling, ritual, and land-based creation that can offer a creative blueprint for the human-centered goals that Education 4.0 claims to value. Through a qualitative synthesis, I deconstruct …

"Tabi-Tabi Po!": An Exploration Of Non-Mainstream Art Materials As Medium In Creating Lenticular Art On Philippine Lower Mythology And Cultural Values, Fernando R. Lacson Jr.
DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
Art functions as a dynamic medium through which cultural beliefs and values are continuously expressed and reinterpreted. Despite the richness of Philippine mythology, its integration into contemporary interactive visual art remains underexplored, presenting an opportunity to recontextualize indigenous narratives for modern audiences. The study focuses on three figures from local folklore—Nuno sa Punso, Tiyanak, and Diwata—and examines how their moral and symbolic attributes may be translated into experimental lenticular artworks. Guided by Functional Myth Theory and Interactive Aesthetics, the study utilizes a practice-based approach, treating artistic creation as both method and inquiry. The research involved the development of two-way lenticular …

Art In Laparoscopy: A Fun Way Of Training In Minimally Invasive Surgery, Michael Dennis I. Dela Paz
DLSU Arts Congress Conference Proceedings
Paramount to the safety and efficiency of any surgical procedures warrants the enhancement of skills of the surgeon whether in training or practice. In minimally invasive surgery, one should inherently have excellent depth perception, consistent hand-eye coordination, and skillful use of the dominant and non-dominant hands to be able to perform operations with precision, efficiency, and safety. For most surgeons, sustaining or even improving these laparoscopic surgical skills through traditional drills would sometimes reach a point that it seems to be monotonous, and repetitive. Breaking away from the traditional skills will make the training and honing of minimally invasive surgical …

Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series
Branding for universities is a relatively new concept, particularly as they position themselves to be an “entrepreneurial university.” This model necessitates a proactive approach to intellectual property (IP) management and technology transfer. Recent studies on university branding focus on higher educational institutions (HEIs) and how branding supports the development of their distinct identities and reputation. However, research on the perception of university-developed products, particularly in the context of the Philippines, is still limited. This study, therefore, examined the brand perceptions and purchase drivers of engaged stakeholders towards University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)-developed products to evaluate the effectiveness of …
What Innovation Means For The Philippines, Felipe Jesus
What Innovation Means For The Philippines, Felipe Jesus
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
The administration argues that the future of the nation is “innovation,” as this is the catalyst to sustaining growth. On paper, this certainly looks like a very defensible strategy. The Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023–2028’s Chapter 8: Advance Research and Development, Technology, and Innovation, lays out strategies, programs, and legislative priorities to be pursued to promote innovation among industries and identifies metrics to measure the country’s progress in harnessing research and development, technology, and innovation.

Is Anything Left Of The Debate About The Sources Of Growth In East Asia Thirty Years Later?, Jesus Felipe, John Mccombie
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
The year 2023 commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication of the influential, yet controversial, study The East Asian Miracle report by the World Bank (1993). An important part of the report’s analysis was concerned with the sources of growth in East Asia. This was based on the neoclassical decomposition of growth into productivity and factor accumulation. At about the same time, the publication of Alwyn Young’s (1992, 1995) and J-I Kim and Lawrence Lau’s (1994) studies, and Paul Krugman’s (1994) popularization of the “zero total factor productivity growth” thesis, led to a very important debate within the profession, on …

The study was conducted to determine how 21 experts in the discipline clusters of humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences defined originality and creativity in terms of how these concepts are understood and realized in the production of works in their respective disciplines, what related copyright issues emerge related to these concepts, and how these two concepts are related. Through thematic qualitative analysis of in-depth interview data, findings suggest that while there may be converging ideas about originality and creativity among the discipline clusters, the way this concept is operationalized by each discipline significantly vary. The study is …

The Next Frontier: The Arbitrability Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Daniel Hofilena
Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation
Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are private rights and are only as strong as the means to enforce them. In this light, arbitration has been an increasingly attractive alternative for parties to resolve their disputes due to its efficiency, specialty, confidentiality, and deference to party autonomy. Arbitral awards can likewise be enforced across jurisdictions that are signatories to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. However, the capability of parties to submit IPR matters to arbitration is sometimes limited by the State under its laws. This study will explore possible solutions to the arbitrability of …

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about numerous consequences upon the global community, whether socially or economically. The education sector has not been isolated from the effects of the pandemic, having to largely suspend face-to-face classes, its traditional approach to learning, in favor of alternative modalities in teaching. To ensure learning continuity despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the Department of Education - Philippines promulgated a series of DepEd Orders directing public and private schools to adopt alternative methods of learning such as online distance learning and the preparation of Self Learning Modules. The resort to the different learning modalities …

A Sound Vote: Integrity, Music Copyright, And Politics In The Philippines, Mark Robert Dy
Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation
This research aims to determine whether the moral right of integrity may be invoked by composers or performers to prevent the use of their music for political campaigning. Protecting the integrity of a work does not only mean keeping a work unchanged but also includes preventing its use in an undesirable context. Under ordinary circumstances, a license from the music publisher or agent would be enough permission to play or perform music publicly. However, political campaigns are uniquely complicated situations because permitting the use of one’s music might be perceived as support for a political candidate, party, or ideology. The …
