A Meta-Theory For Understanding Systems Within Socio-Technical Systems, Robert Bostrom, Saurabh Gupta, Dominic Thomas

Saurabh Gupta

Information systems (IS) research often attempts to examine and explain how technology leads to outcomes through usage of IS. Although extensive research in this area has resulted in a significant number of theories, limited work has been done on integrating these theories. This paper presents adaptive structuration theory (AST) as a meta-theory for examining IS within an organizational context. The two main contributions of the paper are an understanding of meta-theory’s role in IS and building a case for using AST as a meta-theory to (1) provide an overarching perspective for understanding and integrating existing literature and theories, (2) provide …

A Meta Theory For Understanding Is In Socio-Technical Systems, Dominic Thomas, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom

Information systems (IS) research often attempts to examine and explain how technology leads to outcomes through usage of information technology (IT). Although extensive research in this area has resulted in a significant number of theories, limited work has been done on integrating these theories. This paper presents adaptive structuration theory (AST) as a meta-theory for examining IS within a socio-technical systems (STS) context. Two main contributions are: 1) an understanding of meta-theory and how it fits with other meta-studies and 2) applying AST as a meta-theory to: A) achieve deeper domain understanding, B) provide an overarching perspective for reviewing literature …

Using Peer-To-Peer Technology For Collaborative Knowledge Management: Applications And Research Issues, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom Dec 2005

Using Peer-To-Peer Technology For Collaborative Knowledge Management: Applications And Research Issues, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom

Saurabh Gupta

As organizations struggle with how to develop and use their inherent expertise, the importance of knowledge management and collaboration has grown in both academic and practitioner communities. This paper outlines a new concept of collaborative knowledge management (CKM), which bridges the two fields. Drawing from literature, we present a conceptual framework for understanding the concepts underlying CKM. Next, this paper explores how a new technology, peer-to-peer (P2P), fits in the CKM paradigm. A discussion on P2P tools and a comparison of these tools with client server tools for enabling the CKM process is presented. P2P has great appeal for CKM …

Theoretical Model For Investigating The Impact Of Knowledge Portals On Different Levels Of Knowledge Processing, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom Dec 2004

Theoretical Model For Investigating The Impact Of Knowledge Portals On Different Levels Of Knowledge Processing, Saurabh Gupta, Robert Bostrom

Saurabh Gupta

Much of the research in the area of Knowledge Management (KM) has been at the individual level. However, KM literature argues for knowledge processing capacity at an organisational level to enhance organisational performance. This paper argues that there are additional levels of knowledge processing that need to be studied such as teams and communities of practice. The paper presents a theoretical model for investigating the impact of knowledge systems on different levels of and inter-level knowledge processing. Knowledge portals are used as an example of a KM system that facilitates knowledge flows. A framework for classification of portals is presented. …
