Esg News-Based Public Sentiment, Media Attention And Stock Price Crash Risk, Kesara Hewage, Subhash Abhayawansa, Mardy Chiah
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: This study aims to examine whether media-driven public perception of a firm’s environmental, social and governance performance (i.e. ESG news sentiment) and its media attention are associated with subsequent stock price crash risk. Using public sentiment formed from ESG news alone – separate from firms’ self-reported ESG performance – study investigates whether media-based ESG information provides incremental informational content about crash risk beyond disclosure-based ESG metrics.
Design/methodology/approach: The authors analyse more than 34, 000 semi-annual firm-level observations for US-listed firms from 2011 to 2021, using Refinitiv MarketPsych ESG sentiment and media attention data. They conduct cross-sectional and channel tests …
Labor Mobility, Managerial Evaluation Risk, And Corporate Performance Disclosures, Justin Hung Nguyen, Buhui Qiu, Cameron Truong
Labor Mobility, Managerial Evaluation Risk, And Corporate Performance Disclosures, Justin Hung Nguyen, Buhui Qiu, Cameron Truong
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study documents that managers of firms with greater labor mobility (LM) face higher personal evaluation risk (i.e., higher likelihood of performance-driven forced turnover), especially among firms with more transparent performance disclosures. Moreover, managers of high-LM firms tend to adopt lower-quality performance disclosures (i.e., lower financial statement readability, earnings quality, and accounting conservatism) to mitigate their personal evaluation risk. The effect of LM on performance disclosure quality is stronger for firms whose managers are more concerned about personal evaluation risk, but is weaker for firms headquartered in states that restrain mobility. Finally, low-quality disclosures by high-LM firms attract a valuation …

Nov. 2026 Mda Insurance - Could Your Practice Be Vulnerable To Embezzlement?, Reva Darling
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This feature highlights internal financial risks facing dental practices, noting that up to 70% of dentists may experience embezzlement during their careers. Citing high-profile Michigan fraud cases, author Reva Darling outlines critical behavioral warning signs of internal theft, such as resistance to duty cross-training or reluctance to take vacations. It introduces Prosperident’s free Embezzlement Risk Assessment Questionnaire for MDA members to evaluate vulnerabilities and establish robust internal controls.

The Nevada Innovation Economy And Federal Funding, Len Jessup, Sean Curry
Policy Briefs and Reports
This policy brief examines the nascent Nevada innovation economy and the funding capacity of the federal government. The analysis highlights how federal innovation programs have stimulated research, commercialization, and long-term economic development in Nevada. Using a multi-level framework encompassing technological, industrial, and spatial innovation, this policy brief documents how federal research funding, augmented by state programs and university infrastructure, has contributed to the formation of new research capabilities, seeded industry clusters and startups, and expanded workforce capacity. The findings suggest that federal resources have been productively deployed to date, generating significant scientific, economic, and social returns, but that more must …

Retaking The Pulse Of The Real Economy Using Financial Statements: Validation And Extension, Nathan Parrotte, Narayan Ramasubbu, Ahmed Elshahat
Annual DBA Scholars Conference
Financial statements provided by publicly traded firms inform shareholders about the present state of a firm. While it is natural to consider public financial statements at the firm level, what benefits could be gained from their aggregation? Present research on this is limited with the most relevant recent research being done by Konchitchki and Patatoukas (2014), with their results highly supporting the argument that public financial statement analysis can be used to understand “the pulse” of the real economy. This study not only replicates their study validating it, but it will also expand the timeline to the end of 2025.
The Law Of General Average, Luca Anderlini, Joshua C. Teitelbaum
The Law Of General Average, Luca Anderlini, Joshua C. Teitelbaum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Part of a ship’s cargo is jettisoned in order to save the vessel and the remaining cargo from imminent peril. How should the loss be shared among the cargo owners? The law of general average, an ancient principle of maritime law, prescribes that the owners share the loss proportionally according to the respective values of their cargo. We analyze whether the law of general average is a truthful and efficient mechanism. That is, we investigate whether it induces truthful reporting of cargo values and yields a Pareto efficient allocation in equilibrium. We show that the law of general average is …

Money Talks: What Parents Are And Aren’T Teaching Kids About Financial Literacy, Joseph D. Foresi, Robert J. Glew
Annual DBA Scholars Conference
Financial literacy among young adults remains low despite the family's central role in early financial socialization. This study examines the relationship between parental financial socialization and children's financial literacy, extending the LeBaron-Black et al. (2022) parent financial socialization survey to incorporate cornerstone financial literacy concepts including budgeting, saving, borrowing, and investing (Redmund, 2010). Survey results reveal that while many parents introduce their children to basic financial concepts, they systematically fall short of teaching the foundational literacy skills associated with long-term financial well-being.
Microbusiness Owner-Managers And Financial Planning: A Transtheoretical Model Of Behaviour Change Approach, Christopher L. Gorman
Microbusiness Owner-Managers And Financial Planning: A Transtheoretical Model Of Behaviour Change Approach, Christopher L. Gorman
Annual DBA Scholars Conference
The practitioner-scholar proposes a cross-sectional study to investigate how microbusiness owner-managers adopt financial planning behaviour through the lens of the Transtheoretical Model of Behaviour Change (TTM). The study will examine the TTM’s stages of change and the factors that influence these owner-managers’ decisions to engage in financial planning. By applying a behaviour change framework to an underexplored area of financial planning research, the study will aim to identify barriers and opportunities to microbusiness owners’ adoption of financial planning. The findings will inform strategies CFP® professionals can use to enhance client engagement, communication, and decision-making among microbusiness owner-managers.

Operating Costs, Liquidity, And Demographic Pressures In Tanzania's Reformed Public Pension System (2004–2024), Athumani S. Mbuttuka, Ellinami J. Minja, Siasa I. Mzenzi
Business Management Review
The efficiency of public pension systems is critical for accumulating old-age savings and reducing fiscal pressures. This study evaluated Tanzania’s reformed public pension system from 2004 to 2024, covering pre- and post-merger periods, using longitudinal financial data and benchmarking indicators, including cost-to-contribution, cost-to-asset, payout, and dependency ratios, against regulatory and OECD levels. One-tailed sample t-tests compared efficiency and sustainability metrics against benchmarks. Findings show that operating costs averaged 2.8% of assets and administrative cost-to-contribution averaged 11.8%, exceeding the OECD average of 1.6% and the regulatory ceiling of 10%, respectively. Although operating-cost ratios declined after the 2018 restructuring, costs generally remained …

Modelling The Financial Viability Of Offshore Aquaculture Using A Case Study Of A Sea Bass Farm In The Bay Of Lion, France, Jeremy Van Dyken, Houshang Habibniya, Suzan Dsouza, Tyler Sclodnick
Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
The extension of net pen aquaculture to open ocean sites provides many advantages to the industry including opportunity for expansion, utilization of high energy sites, and better resilience to certain near shore or surface-associated stressors. The industry has been slow to develop due to high perceived risks and a lack of operating farms to provide financial information for open ocean farm operations. A model was developed to evaluate the economic viability of a hypothetical sea bass aquaculture venture in the open French Mediterranean Sea that utilizes open ocean submersible farming systems. Advanced open ocean equipment, including submersible net pens, environmental …

Impact Of Corporate Governance On Achieving Desired Corporate Hedging Outcomes, Shweta Chitalia
Impact Of Corporate Governance On Achieving Desired Corporate Hedging Outcomes, Shweta Chitalia
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
Corporate derivative hedging is intended to manage financial exposures, stabilize cash flows, and support organizational risk-management objectives; however, limited public evidence exists regarding how governance structures influence hedge evaluation, approval, and timely execution. This qualitative descriptive study examined how corporate governance was publicly described in relation to derivative hedging among large U.S. nonfinancial corporations. The study analyzed one publicly available Form 10-K filing from each of 25 purposively selected S&P 500 nonfinancial firms reporting active derivative hedging programs. Data were collected from SEC filings and organized in an Excel-based audit trail containing a document log, excerpt-level coding records, codebook, firm …

Unraveling The Connectedness Between Non-Fungible Tokens, Decentralized Finance, And Green Assets During Turbulent Times, Rija Anwar, Syed Ali Raza
Business Review
Green assets during the Bitcoin plummet-2018, COVID-2019, worldwide decline in oil demand-2020, and the Russia-Ukraine Conflict. The quantile connectedness approach, combined with the extreme tail of distribution technique (Ando et al., 2021), has been employed. According to static quantile connectedness, NFTs and DeFi assets perform the role of spillover transmitters; in contrast, green assets receive spillovers across three distinctive market settings. Additionally, the dynamic time-varying net directional connectedness estimates reveal that during normal market condition, the connectedness degree between NFTs, DeFi assets, and green assets remains low relative to extreme events at different point in time. Moreover, it provides valuable …

Green Finance’S Role In Bank Risk: Empirical Evidence From The Emerging Economy, Viverita Viverita, Dwi Nastiti Danarsari, Ratih Dyah Kusumastuti, Ruhaini Muda
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK)’s sustainable finance roadmap, phases I and II, primarily aims to facilitate sustainable development by integrating economic, social, and environmental considerations into financial policies. A special objective is to promote the development of green financial products and services. This policy allows banks to mitigate reputational and regulatory challenges. Nevertheless, the prompt implementation of green credit may entail transition risks, such as policy adjustment costs. A limited body of research examines the direct relationship between green finance and bank risk, particularly in the context of sustainability mandates. This study analyzes the influence of green finance on banking …

The Efficient Market Hypothesis In Youth Entrepreneurship: Understanding, Application, And Contextual Factors — A Systematic Literature Review, Omari Khalifa Mbura Prof,, Binto M. Binto
Business Management Review
This systematic literature review explores how youth entrepreneurs understand and apply the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) in their decision-making, and examines the contextual factors influencing the decision-making nexus. Guided by a post-positivist framework, the review synthesises extant literature across youth entrepreneurship, finance, and digital strategy to map emerging themes and identify knowledge gaps. It covered a sample of 38 peer-reviewed articles, selected in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Findings of the systematic literature review show that youth entrepreneurs' engagement with EMH is largely experiential and indirect, influenced by digital literacy, social learning, and the realities of rapidly changing market environments. …

Interpretive Flexibility And The Social Construction Of Generative Ai In Education: A Scot Analysis, Elham Mousavidin, Sujin K. Horwitz
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools has intensified discussions about their role in education. This study uses the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) framework to explore how educational stakeholders interpret GenAI and how these interpretations influence its development and adoption. Through an interpretive literature review of research published between 2021 and 2025, we examine stakeholder perspectives using SCOT constructs, including relevant social groups, interpretive flexibility, technological frames, and controversies. Results identify three main interpretive tensions shaping current debates: transformational force versus transactional tool, cognitive augmentation versus cognitive atrophy, and digital empowerment versus digital enslavement. These tensions show …

People Orientation And Thing Orientation In Business Majors: Implications For Assessing The Impacts Of Cross-Functional Business Program Curricula, Todd J. Hostager, David A. Christopher, Kristy J. Lauver, Christopher Knowles
International Journal for Business Education
Background/Introduction/Purpose: Prior research documented significant differences in people orientation and thing orientation (PTO) based on type of major and sex. This study examines a set of measures for helping business programs to assess whether they are producing graduates equipped to consider both people and things when making decisions, regardless of their major or sex.
Methods/Design: Students in a strategic management capstone course spent a single 75-minute session responding to a brief new venture pitch by identifying what types of additional information they would need to decide whether to invest in the business. Three Likert-scaled options gauged the extent to participant …
Adjusting To Extreme Demand Volatility: A Comparative Analysis Of Air Navigation Service Provider Financial Resilience In The Southern Asia-Pacific, Margaret Arblaster, Gui Lohmann
Adjusting To Extreme Demand Volatility: A Comparative Analysis Of Air Navigation Service Provider Financial Resilience In The Southern Asia-Pacific, Margaret Arblaster, Gui Lohmann
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Air navigation service providers fund their operations almost entirely through activity-based user charges, creating a structural dependency between revenue and air traffic volume. When traffic collapses, revenue falls immediately, but the cost base, dominated by specialised labour under fixed-term employment contracts and long-lived capital infrastructure, adjusts slowly, if at all. This paper examines how five corporatised, wholly government-owned air navigation service providers in the southern Asia-Pacific (i.e., Airservices Australia, Airways New Zealand, AirNav Indonesia, NiuSky Pacific in Papua New Guinea, and Fiji Airports) responded to the extreme demand shock of the COVID-19 pandemic and assesses the role of government grants …

Dentistry And The Law - Understanding ‘Rollover Equity’ When Selling Your Practice, Daniel Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law - Understanding ‘Rollover Equity’ When Selling Your Practice, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Daniel J. Schulte, MDA Legal Counsel, addresses the legal and tax implications of 'rollover equity' when dentists sell their practices to private equity-backed buyers. The article outlines typical shareholder and buy-sell agreement restrictions, noting how equity is often subject to vesting and employment covenants. Schulte explains the critical importance of making an Internal Revenue Code Section 83(b) election within 30 days of closing. Failing to file this election results in taxation at high ordinary income rates as the stock vests, whereas a timely election accelerates tax payments but secures lower capital gains tax rates upon eventual sale.

Central Bank Financial Strength, Credibility, And Global Market Risk: Evidence From Southeast Asian Economies, Mega Fauziah, Hermanto Siregar, Solikin M. Juhro, Tanti Novianti, Sigit Wibowo
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This paper examines central bank credibility in the context of its financial strength, independence, and global market uncertainty in five Southeast Asian countries between 2005 and 2023. We find that the global market risk indicated by VIX reveals that these Southeast Asian economies, despite achieving considerable central bank independence and institutional development, remain fundamentally constrained by global market conditions in maintaining their credibility, measured by the difference between the inflation rate and its target in the same year. We argue that in emerging economies exposed to global uncertainty, central bank profitability, conditional on its independence, is vital for central banks …
Inflation-Differential Rule Versus (De Facto Soft-Peg) Discretion: Exchange-Rate Management Approach In Developing Economies, Behnam Ebrahimi, Mohammad Vaez Barzani Dr.
Inflation-Differential Rule Versus (De Facto Soft-Peg) Discretion: Exchange-Rate Management Approach In Developing Economies, Behnam Ebrahimi, Mohammad Vaez Barzani Dr.
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Many developing and emerging economies officially report a managed floating exchange-rate regime tailored with a fundamental exchange rate management approach, while in practice operating a de facto soft peg, characterized by discretionary, near-constant exchange-rate depreciation aimed at dampening inflation expectations. This discretionary approach—often justified as a pragmatic response to inflationary pressure—produces a hybrid regime that lacks the transparency and credibility emphasized in IMF policy guidance. This study evaluates whether substituting Discretionary Soft-Peg Exchange Rate Management approach with an Inflation-Differential Rule of Exchange Rate Management approach, which links exchange-rate adjustments to the inflation differential between domestic and rest of the world, …
Oil Futures Reactions To Monetary Policy Surprises: A High-Frequency Analysis, Syed Mujahid Hussain Dr., Basel Awartani, Farrukh Javed, Iqbal Khadaroo Dr., Nader Virk Dr.
Oil Futures Reactions To Monetary Policy Surprises: A High-Frequency Analysis, Syed Mujahid Hussain Dr., Basel Awartani, Farrukh Javed, Iqbal Khadaroo Dr., Nader Virk Dr.
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study examines how oil futures respond to monetary policy shocks arising from FOMC and ECB target-rate announcements, using high-frequency data. The results indicate that both sets of announcements significantly influence oil futures prices. However, FOMC decisions have a more pronounced effect on oil futures, whereas ECB interest rate surprises predominantly have a limited impact on the oil futures return and volatility. The analysis further uncovers an asymmetric response to positive versus negative interest rate shocks. These findings enhance the understanding of how monetary policy surprises are transmitted to oil futures markets. Therefore, these results have important implications for policymakers …

"Why Do Students Save Less?" A Study Of The Determinants Of Saving Intentions And Behaviours Among Undergraduate Students, Rna Hamza Ahmed Eissa, Chi Hau Tan, Ben Hou
International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting
Despite the issue of low savings being a serious concern, limited research has been conducted on students’ saving behaviour in Malaysia, especially when it comes to private universities. This research focuses on examining factors that affect saving behaviour among undergraduate students at a private university in Malaysia, in reference to the Theory of Planned Behaviour. A mixed-method design was applied. Quantitative research was conducted, in which 122 valid responses were collected via an online survey and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). In addition, qualitative research with 11 respondents was conducted, and the data were analysed using …
