Akshaya Patra: A Leader In Battling Classroom Hunger, Ajith Sankar
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Akshaya Patra, the world’s largest mid-day meal program run by a not-for-profit organization, was started in 2000 by serving approximately 1500 school going children in Bangalore, India. In 2009, the organization achieved a milestone of serving one million lunches to the school children. By 2021, it had been feeding more than 1.8 million children and aimed at feeding five million children by 2025. Akshaya Patra also offered its services to people affected during natural calamities like floods and earthquakes, and for the homeless living in shelter homes[2]. It was also the first NGO managed food programme in the …

Codes Of Ethics: Extending Classification Techniques With Natural Language Processing, Zachary Glass, E. Susanna Cahn
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Language is an indicator of how stakeholders view an ethics code’s intent, and key to distinguishing code properties, such as promoting ethical-valued decision-making or code-based compliance. This article quantifies ethics codes’ language using Natural Language Processing (NLP), then uses machine learning to classify ethics codes. NLP overcomes some inherent difficulties of “measuring” verbal documents. Ethics codes selected from lists of “best” companies were compared with codes from a sample of Fortune 500 companies. Results show that some of these ethics codes are different enough from the norm to be distinguished by an algorithm; indicating as well that lists of “best” …
Wages, Work, And The Catholic Social Teaching, John A. Hunnes
Wages, Work, And The Catholic Social Teaching, John A. Hunnes
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The Catholic Social Teaching is a rich and relevant source for studying contemporary problems in society. In this paper, I investigate the question about equal pay in light of the social teaching. During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in equal pay and related concepts like universal basic income. By equal pay we mean that everyone in society receives the same remuneration regardless of the type of work, level of effort, or unemployed or not. From an economic point of view, there are large negative incentive effects with such an arrangement. The reason is that the principle …

The Co-Evolution Of Global Legitimation And Technology Upgrading: The Case Of Huawei, Sihong Wu, Di Fan, Yiyi Su
American Business Review
This study explores the underlying relationship between acquisition of global legitimacy and the search for technology upgrading by Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs). Using Huawei’s investment in Russia, Kenya, the United Kingdom and Canada as an in-depth case study, we observe that through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in foreign markets and engaging with local community, Chinese MNEs can acquire global legitimacy and gradually catch up with industry leaders. However, the process of global legitimation and innovation continues to evolve. We find that, together with engaging in CSR activities, acquisition of sophisticated knowledge and creation of innovation bring more legitimacy challenges …

Ethical Duty To Investigate Your Client?, Peter A. Joy
Ethical Duty To Investigate Your Client?, Peter A. Joy
St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics
Lawyers have been implicated in corporate scandals and other client crimes or frauds all too often, and the complicity of some lawyers is troubling both to the public and to members of the legal profession. This is especially true when the crime involved is money laundering. As a response to attorney involvement in crimes or frauds, some legal commentators have called for changes to the ethics rules to require lawyers to investigate their clients and client transactions under some circumstances rather than remaining “consciously” or “willfully” blind to what may be illegal or fraudulent conduct. The commentators argue that such …

Nomadland: The New Frontiers Of The American Dream At The Periphery Of The Market, Aleksandrina Atanasova, Giana Eckhardt
Nomadland: The New Frontiers Of The American Dream At The Periphery Of The Market, Aleksandrina Atanasova, Giana Eckhardt
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This Dialogue contribution is based around the film Nomadland, which won five Oscars, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. Nomadland, a captivating ode to resisting market logics of accumulation, delivers a gripping image of what life looks like in the absence of possessions. Navigating between the extremes of lack and social displacement, and community and newfound ability to live life with little, the nomads find ways to live in the face of despair and disenchantment. Nomadland is a critique of the death of the American dream while at the same time a story of solidarity amongst the dispossessed.

“Surviving And Growing Up With Illegal Status”: The Analysis Of Socio–Economic Household, Potential Conflict, The Environmental Damage, And Vulnerability Of Local Community To Disaster, Sofyan Syahnur, Yossi Diantimala
Journal of Sustainable Mining
This study aims to analyze, from social-economics and environmental perspectives, how illegal gold mining survives and grows with its illegal status. Generally, illegal mining has a positive impact on the socio-economy of all parties involved. However, mining activities cause environmental damage and pollution so that the local community is vulnerable to disaster and potential conflict. This research was conducted at an illegal mining site in Aceh, the western province of Indonesia. To describe the primary data, it employs a descriptive qualitative method. The purposive sampling method is used to select key informants. The results show an increasing income of all …

CSR corporate social responsibility and practices of communication managers: case study food companies of Souss Massa Draa
Increased pressure from civil society and the community financial, generated by the strong growth of ecological and societal problems has pushed companies to adopt more transparent and responsible modes of governance. This governance has resulted in actions and so-called responsible and citizen speeches. Accordingly, communication on Corporate Social Responsibility takes on, in this context, a particular strategic and operational dimension. To study it, we propose in this article to study the concept of CSR and that of communication on social responsibility. CSR on …
The Evident Need For Banking Reform In The Legal Marijuana Industry, Jonathan T. James, Steven C. Tippins
The Evident Need For Banking Reform In The Legal Marijuana Industry, Jonathan T. James, Steven C. Tippins
Journal of Sustainable Social Change
Marijuana reform legislation has created a lucrative industry for legal marijuana on the local and state level in some jurisdictions. Federal laws have forced legal marijuana dispensaries to be cash-only businesses with limited banking options. The lack of normal banking services has also affected firms’ ability to manage profits earned from operations. Our hermeneutic phenomenological study was grounded by the conceptual framework of the motivations of humans and humans’ need to feel safe. The participants in this study were owners and operators in the legal marijuana industry in Colorado. Data were collected through interviews, although the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of …

The All Events Test In An Era Of Self-Regulation, Glenn Walberg
The All Events Test In An Era Of Self-Regulation, Glenn Walberg
William & Mary Business Law Review
Accrual-method taxpayers must use the all events tests to account for rights and liabilities under contracts for sales of goods and services. These longstanding tests evolved from transactions that involved relatively straightforward exchanges of goods or services for payments, and the tests currently reflect an expectation that a taxpayer will usually make an accrual when a seller’s performance fixes the contracting parties’ respective right to and liability for payment. Business practices have changed such that many sales now occur in relationships where contracting parties assume, monitor, and enforce process-related obligations, including adoptions of codes of conduct by members of global …

The Rescue Of American International Group Module B: The Securities Borrowing Facility, Lily S. Engbith, Alec Buchholtz, Devyn Jeffereis
Journal of Financial Crises
In 2008, American International Group (AIG) was among the largest insurance corporations in the world and maintained a profitable securities lending program. However, AIG invested much of the cash collateral received from counterparties in residential mortgage-backed securities, whose value began to collapse rapidly and unexpectedly, creating liquidity strain for AIG when borrowers returned their securities. Because of these strains, credit downgrades, and losses, in September, the company sought assistance from the Federal Reserve which, on October 6, 2008, approved the establishment of the Securities Borrowing Facility by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY). The FRBNY agreed to loan …

The Rescue Of American International Group Module A: The Revolving Credit Facility, Alec Buchholtz, Aidan Lawson
Journal of Financial Crises
On September 15, 2008, the big three rating agencies downgraded AIG’s credit ratings multiple levels, exacerbating liquidity strains that the company was experiencing due to increasing cash demands by securities borrowers and collateral calls by credit default swap (CDS) customers. To prevent AIG from filing for bankruptcy, the Federal Reserve (the Fed) announced on the following day that, pursuant to its emergency powers, it would provide the company with an $85 billion Revolving Credit Facility (RCF). The RCF was secured by AIG assets and interests in its subsidiaries and required AIG to grant the US Department of the Treasury a …

Eliminating Forced Labor In American Corporations And Their Supply Chain: Existing Solutions And Failures, Breann Hunt
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The author of this article examines current judicial precedent pertaining to human rights violations perpetrated in the supply chains of American companies. The author argues that existing legislation is insufficient to prevent firms from profiting from forced labor. The author demonstrates the effect of forced labor upon the competitive landscape and illustrates the damage done to ethical companies forced to compete with low-priced competitors. By analyzing existing research on competitive injury and Antitrust regulation, the author thus proposes that there be a synthesis of third party research capabilities and legislation that would help prove competitive injury due to forced labor …

Animal Identification And Traceability Under The Us National Animal Identification System, Margaret Rosso Grossman
Animal Identification And Traceability Under The Us National Animal Identification System, Margaret Rosso Grossman
Journal of Food Law & Policy
The identification of animals has a long history in the United States. Since the late nineteenth century, livestock producers have used brands to mark their animals. Ear tags and other marks now identify individual animals or animals from a specific producer, but not all livestock are identified to facilitate traceability.
The Perceived Ethics Of Artificial Intelligence, Ross Murray
The Perceived Ethics Of Artificial Intelligence, Ross Murray
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used by millions of consumers in their daily lives. Although this technology is providing convenience, information, and instant gratification the underlying moral framework that AI uses remains largely unknown to the consumers of the technology. Two of the mostly widely used moral approaches (deontology and teleology), and their implications for AI, are discussed. The context of chatbots that use AI is examined, specifically exploring Amazon’s Alexa. The context illustrates the issue of the latent moral frameworks that AI technologies use when interacting with consumers or the environment. Although AI holds the promise of many potential …

The Coronavirus Pandemic Shutdown And Distributive Justice: Why Courts Should Refocus The Fifth Amendment Takings Analysis, Timothy M. Harris
The Coronavirus Pandemic Shutdown And Distributive Justice: Why Courts Should Refocus The Fifth Amendment Takings Analysis, Timothy M. Harris
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic and the ensuing shutdown of private businesses—to promote the public’ s health and safety— demonstrated the wide reach of state and local governments’ police power. Many businesses closed and many went bankrupt as various government programs failed to keep their enterprises afloat.
These businesses were shut down to further the national interest in stemming a global pandemic. This is an archetypal example of regulating for the public health—preventing a direct threat that sickened hundreds of thousands of Americans. But some businesses were disproportionately hit while others flourished. Many who bore the brunt of these regulations sued, …

Whatever Happened To Old Mac Donald's Farm… Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation, Factory Farming And The Safety Of The Nation's Food Supply, Julie Follmer, Roseann B. Termini
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Today, livestock farming is a far stretch from the nostalgic notion of animals grazing in green pastures, roaming free in the fresh country air and returning at the end of the day to a cozy barn. Simply stated, livestock farming is a large scale business, where tens of thousands of animals are swiftly raised industrial-style for maximum profit. Under the "factory farm" model, large corporate owned operations grow quantities of animals for slaughter for human consumption as food. In fact, livestock farms now raise 40% of all animials in the United States.
