Ernst & Young’S Attempt To Split Accounting And Consulting Services: An Unsuccessful Endeavor, Jacob Jovanovich
Ernst & Young’S Attempt To Split Accounting And Consulting Services: An Unsuccessful Endeavor, Jacob Jovanovich
Honors Capstones
This paper aims to address the reasons why Ernst & Young attempted to split their auditing and consulting services, the reasons why the split failed to materialize, and the resulting consequences. Research for the paper involved a literature review of relevant articles and subsequent discussion. This paper concludes that the attempted split was motivated by regulatory concerns regarding auditor independence and profitability gaps between assurance and consulting. This paper also concludes that the split was unsuccessful due to unfavorable economic conditions and the mechanics of partner compensation.

Buffering The Negative Impacts Of Age Diversity On Company Performance And Innovation: The Roles Of Knowledge Transfer And Environmental Uncertainty, Tiecheng Xu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) era has resulted in significant uncertainty in the global economy, while deglobalization in international politics and economics, and the interweaving of old and new contradictions, have presented substantial challenges to businesses. On the other hand, aging is a crucial issue that China and the world at large are currently facing. It is essential to study the relationship between employee age structure and enterprise performance.
Different researchers have provided empirical analyses of the effects of age diversity on organizational performance and innovation, but the conclusions are not consistent. According to the research in this paper, …
Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Transparency And Sustainability Transparency In The Fashion Industry, Sohaila Hussaini
Exploring The Relationship Between Financial Transparency And Sustainability Transparency In The Fashion Industry, Sohaila Hussaini
Dissertations
The focus of this research is to investigate the relationship between the corporate sustainability attributes of financial transparency and sustainability transparency in the fashion industry. Many firms in the fashion industry disclose sustainability reports to communicate their efforts and activities for promoting sound environmental, social, and governance-related policies and practices. However, recent literature suggests that within the fashion industry, incomplete disclosures and a general lack of transparency diminish the usefulness and effectiveness of such reports. This study seeks to ascertain whether observed shortcomings associated with environmental, social, and/or governance-related disclosures are associated with similar shortcomings in corporate financial reporting completeness …

An Empirical Analysis Of Sentiment And Confidence Regarding Interest Rates In Disclosures Of Public Firms In The U.S. Fintech Sector, James J. Farley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studied the channel of communication of 10-K and 10-Q financial reports and the effectiveness of relaying interest rate sentiment. 10-K financial reports relay information regarding a company’s financials on a yearly basis while 10-Q reports relay information on a quarterly basis. To study a newer industry of Fintech and how it may be affected by interest rates it was necessary to narrow Fintech to the United States and a coordinated public channel of communication using the 10-Q and 10-K financial reports. Fintech emerged as a relevant word and industry coming off the Great Recession of 2009. During the …

Dissertations
Exploring the impact of specific pedagogical strategies in online accounting education on student learning outcomes is central to this research. This two-study dissertation focuses on the influence of course delivery methods on student performance and the mediating function of accounting efficacy. A diverse sample of accounting and business students was quantitatively analyzed to determine the relationship between course structure, classroom justice, students’ motivation and their accounting efficacy, applicability of learned material, and final grades. Even though certain teaching practices were advantageous, the combination of these practices did not always lead to improved student performance, according to the findings. Significant determinants …
The Effect Of Cloud-Based Platforms On Auditing Standards Set By The Pcaob, Quinn Bourland
The Effect Of Cloud-Based Platforms On Auditing Standards Set By The Pcaob, Quinn Bourland
Honors Theses
As accounting software has evolved over time, so have the procedures and expectations associated with those programs. Similarly, cloud-based platforms have become more and more prevalent, and theoretically, there ought to be more procedures and expectations associated with these platforms. While there are many sources of regulation for the accounting industry, audits are given careful consideration due to the influence they have on the decision of external users of financial statements. One such place where the procedures and expectations are explicitly defined is for audits of public companies through the Auditing Standards created by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board …

Risky Business: Ceo Risk Tolerance And Non-Gaap Earnings, Johnna Murray
Risky Business: Ceo Risk Tolerance And Non-Gaap Earnings, Johnna Murray
Dissertations
CEO influence on non-GAAP earnings is a growing area of research. Risk-taking by CEOs is one way to gauge the extent of CEO influence on firm outcomes, especially non-GAAP earnings. This research examines the association between CEO sports hobbies, a proxy for CEO risk-taking, and their company’s non-GAAP earnings. In addition to the risk-proclivity of the CEO, non-GAAP earnings are the result of firm size, equity, return on assets, and changes in revenue. The extent of CEO influence was evaluated by a regression analysis of non-GAAP earnings using firm characteristics with CEO risk-taking measures and control variables such as CEO …

Two Studies Examining The Effects Of Industry Controversy On Accountability And Social And Environmental Accounting, Jacob Lennard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The following dissertation consists of two studies investigating the relationships between industry controversy and accountability. In Study 1, I develop a theoretical framework for identifying industry controversy and I discuss the applications to accountability in social and environmental accounting (SEA) research. The framework consists of criteria to define industry controversy (a difference of opinion at a societal level about a routine feature) as well as two primary theories (organizational legitimacy and organizational stigma) and two secondary theories (utility attribution and stigma transfer) that can explain organizational outcomes. Study 1 concludes with a discussion of areas of accounting research where this …
Index Fund Ownership And Stock Price Efficiency: Evidence From Quarterly Earnings Seasons, Joe López Vilaró
Index Fund Ownership And Stock Price Efficiency: Evidence From Quarterly Earnings Seasons, Joe López Vilaró
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While prior research argues that individual investors benefit from a switch to passive investment in index funds (French 2008, Bond and García 2022), higher levels of index fund ownership of firm shares lead to competing factors that influence a firm’s price efficiency (i.e., the speed and accuracy with which a firm’s stock price reflects investor consensus on the information provided about a firm). If relative investor sophistication increases as index fund ownership increases, there is a benefit to the firm’s price efficiency. Yet, more shares held passively limit the shares available for investors to actively incorporate firm news, adversely impacting …
Top Management Team Functional Diversity And Firm Performance: A Mediation Analysis, Tsung Hsuan Yang
Top Management Team Functional Diversity And Firm Performance: A Mediation Analysis, Tsung Hsuan Yang
Accounting Dissertations
In my dissertation, I study whether the top management team (TMT) between-member and within-member functional diversities affect firm performance. Between-member functional diversity, known as Dominant Functional Diversity (DFD), refers to the heterogeneity of functional experts on a TMT, and within-member functional diversity, known as Intrapersonal Functional Diversity (IFD), refers to the aggregate functional breadth of TMT members. My analysis indicates that IFD is positively and significantly associated with firm performance. The relationship between DFD and firm performance is also positive but not statistically significant. In the second analysis, I perform a mediation analysis to explore plausible mechanisms through which TMT …
Investor Sentiment And Debt Contracting, Rohit Agarwal
Investor Sentiment And Debt Contracting, Rohit Agarwal
Accounting Dissertations
**Please note that the full text is embargoed until 08/01/2024** This study examines the impact of investor sentiment on loan spread and financial covenants in debt contracts. Periods of high investor sentiment generally result in pressure on loan spreads due to the ability to issue equity at lower cost. Thus, I conjecture that managers of borrowing firms as well as lenders may trade-off lower spreads against higher or more restrictive covenants during such periods. Therefore, high investor sentiment has two related effects on debt covenants: (i) it encourages higher and more restrictive covenants by lenders at contract inception and, consequently, …

The Rise Of Text Analysis: Using Machine Learning To Explain The Variation In Going Concern Accuracy, Yimei Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Auditors are required to issue modified audit opinions if they have sufficient doubts about the client’s ability to continue as a going concern. These going concern opinions represent an important information resource for financial statement users to evaluate client performance, and are associated with a number of negative capital market outcomes (e.g. negative returns, increased cost of capital, etc.). Despite being used by capital market participants, going concern opinions are commonly plagued with Type I errors (false positive) and Type II errors (false negative), making them a particularly noisy measure. The purpose of this study is to determine whether machine …
