In Defense Of The Old Way Of Teaching Elementary Accounting, Richard G.J. Vangermeersch
Accounting Historians Notebook
After a significant number of years away from teaching elementary accounting, I returned to this interesting phenomena. The devastating rebuke to the old way of teaching the basic courses by the Accounting Education Change Commission led me to rethink the old ways. This rebuke arrived with the 150 credit hour issue, a significant drop in the quantity of business majors, and a very noticeable decay in students' ability to focus arising from the noise generated by MTV, VCRs, and Walkmen. After this rethinking, I not only have returned to my old ways of teaching by the building block approach, but …

Creating An Accounting Culture In The Classroom, David R. Koeppen
Creating An Accounting Culture In The Classroom, David R. Koeppen
Accounting Historians Journal
Numerous critics of accounting education have suggested that students graduating from accounting programs are well-trained but poorly educated. One reason that this may be occurring is that accounting education has become increasingly rule-oriented, focusing more on training future accountants rather than on educating those individuals. It is suggested here that accounting educators should spend more time developing an awareness in students of the culture of accounting. Two methods for accomplishing this change are suggested: (1) Focusing on the issues instead of the rules, and (2) providing students with a historical perspective of the events which have developed and shaped the …

Utilizing The History Of Accounting To Improve Communication Skills, Sandra D. Byrd, David B. Byrd
Accounting Historians Notebook
During recent years, many comments have been made regarding the lack of good written and oral communication skills of entry level accountants. Accounting academicians realize that there is a weakness in the communications area. Many professors do not feel, however, that they have sufficient time to address the area of communication skills in the present undergraduate accounting courses because it is difficult just having time to cover technical accounting material. To increase accounting knowledge and at the same time improve communications skills were the objectives of an intersession course for accounting students which was offered between semesters as a one …
