Can The Financialised Atmosphere Be Effectively Regulated And Accounted For?, Patty Mcnicholas, Carolyn Windsor

Purpose – This paper aims to carry out a critical analysis of the proposed Australian emissions trading scheme (ETS) as a complex market solution to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). Specifically it seeks to examine the financial regulatory infrastructure that will more than likely oversee the Australian ETS, the same regulatory infrastructure which failed to prevent the global financial crisis.Design/methodology/approach – A critical examination of the financialisation of the atmosphere that follows the growth of the financialisation of capitalism when economic activity shifted from production and service sectors to finance. Financialisation of capitalism is supported by capitalist regulation influenced by neo-liberal …
Multilevel Approach To Sustainability Report Assurance Decisions, Belen Fernandez-Feijoo, Silvia Romero, Silvia Ruiz
Multilevel Approach To Sustainability Report Assurance Decisions, Belen Fernandez-Feijoo, Silvia Romero, Silvia Ruiz
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Using generalised linear mixed models as a statistical tool, this paper analyses the factors that explain the decision of a company to assure their sustainability report and of the choice of a Big 4 auditor as assuror. Specifically, we investigate the variables that affect the two dependent variables, existence of assurance and the profile of the assuror, at two different levels: the characteristics of the reporting company, and the country in which the company is located. Previous literature has explained this relationship as the result of linear regression models, considering only the fixed effects of the factors. Taking into account …
How Relevant Is The Disclosure Of A Ceo Pay Ratio?, Addison Stanfill
How Relevant Is The Disclosure Of A Ceo Pay Ratio?, Addison Stanfill
Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses
An aftershock of the so called “Great Recession” in 2008, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act effective July 21, 2010 aimed to increase the transparency of public companies. Section 953(b) of this act is targeting the transparency of executive and employee compensation by requiring the disclosure of a CEO to median employee pay ratio. This disclosure requirement, set to affect all filings with a fiscal year beginning after January 1, 2017, was a response to the public outcry against excessive CEO compensation. Although it does promote the transparency initiative of the Dodd-Frank Act, this disclosure may be …

Cny & Usd: Foreign Exchange Rates, Kimberly D. Scott
Kimberly D Scott
A forward rate is related to a spot rate that is set to take place in the future (Bekaert & Hodrick, 2012). Interestingly, one issue that can be challenging when performing transactions is not knowing what the rate will yield in the future versus at present. Due to market pressures or even policy decisions, either a devaluation or revaluation of domestic currency to foreign currencies can transpire.

Water Contamination, Land Prices, And The Statute Of Repose, John F. Chamblee, Carolyn A. Dehring, Craig A. Depken, Joseph Nicholson
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We examine how water contamination risk from an inactive hazardous waste site is capitalized into surrounding vacant land prices. After public knowledge of the first instance of off-site contamination, we find that shallow groundwater contamination potential is negatively capitalized into land prices, as is proximity to a known contaminated well. Public knowledge of off-site contamination and associated land price changes occur after the North Carolina’s 10-year statute of repose. Our findings raise questions concerning such statutes when environmental contamination has a long latency period, especially given a recent Supreme Court ruling that Superfund law does not preempt state statutes of …

A Research Note On Street Pricing Requirements In Major U.S. Airport Retail Concessions Requests For Proposals, Blaise Waguespack
A Research Note On Street Pricing Requirements In Major U.S. Airport Retail Concessions Requests For Proposals, Blaise Waguespack
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
When reviewing the subject of airport marketing, much of the literature is broken down into issues external or internal to the airport. The external literature tends to divide and differentiate airports on the issues of size (passenger counts) and who is the target of the marketing campaign. Those articles and books that tend to focus on the larger commercial airports (Jarach, 2005; Halpern and Graham, 2013) note the role the airport can play in economic development. Much of the external marketing tasks for the larger commercial airports are aimed at either attracting more airline service to the community or working …
Rembrandt Versus Van Gogh: A Qualitative Contrast Study Applying A Visual Arts Valutation Model, Rene Desborde, Kimball P. Marshall
Rembrandt Versus Van Gogh: A Qualitative Contrast Study Applying A Visual Arts Valutation Model, Rene Desborde, Kimball P. Marshall
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Few marketing scholars have explored the field of fine arts marketing despite its significance as an area of economic activity and human creativity. Billions of dollars change hands annually in the worldwide visual fine arts industry (Velthuis, 2007; Clark and Flaherty, 2002), defined here to include various paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. This lack of academic attention might be because marketing scholars perceive that issues related to fine arts have little to do with marketing. It could also be that the unique characteristics of fine arts marketing are thought not to lend themselves to a traditional analytical approach to explain a …

Perceived Risk Reduction In E-Commerce Environments, C. Michael Powell, Chris Conca
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
During the past three decades, the growth of e-commerce has presented marketers with many new arenas for research and application. Certainly e-commerce has become a significant portion of the world economy and in particular the consumer sector. As previous literature has consistently considered perceived risk as a major factor consumer purchase decisions, this research identifies several major components of consumer perceived risk (PR) and their normative implications in the e-commerce environment
Do You Feel Financially Secured? The Investigation Of Economic Indicators Of Financial Well-Being, Tommy Hsu, Leona Tam, Ryan T. Howell
Do You Feel Financially Secured? The Investigation Of Economic Indicators Of Financial Well-Being, Tommy Hsu, Leona Tam, Ryan T. Howell
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
The economy has been in downward movement in the past few years in the United States as well as different parts of the world. Consumers’ financial situations have been found to influence their purchase behaviors. While some personal finance experts blame consumers’ (lack of) spending plans for their financial situations, others suggest that consumers’ perception of their financial standing influences their purchase plans. Using a nationwide large scale survey study, we examined the value of applying economic indicators as proxy measure of financial well-being. Instead of income or debts, wealth was found to be the most important economic indicator of …

The present study proposed and tested a model that examines the relationship between leadership style, employee’s participation, and justice perceptions. The paper extended the literature of the justice by connecting three major research areas (leadership style, employee’s participation, and organizational justice), and examined the influences of leadership style and employee’s participation in shaping employee’s perception of justice. Results indicated that transactional, transformational, and dynamic leadership have positive impact on distributive, procedural, and interactional justice. Moreover, the effect of leadership style on organizational justice was indirect through employee’s participation. This study synthesized previous leadership studies and argued that leadership style can …

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Big Data now pervades every sector and function of the global economy. This paper focuses on the gaps between Big Data and the current capabilities of data analysis in continuous auditing (CA). It identifies four dimensions of Big Data and five subsequent gaps: namely, data consistency, integrity, aggregation, identification, and confidentiality. For each gap, the paper outlines challenges and possible solutions derived from traditional data systems, which can be further applied to CA systems in an era of Big Data.

What Happens When A Stock Is Added To The Nasdaq-100 Index? What Doesn’T Happen?, Susana Yu, Gwendolyn Webb, Kishore Tandon
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose – Prior research on additions to the S&P 500 and the smaller MidCap 400 and SmallCap 600 indexes reach different conclusions regarding the key variables that explain the cross-section of announcement period abnormal returns. Most notable in this regard is that liquidity measures, long thought to be of importance, do not appear to explain abnormal returns of the S&P 500 when other factors are controlled for. By contrast, they do appear to matter for additions to the smaller stock indexes. To explore this difference, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the abnormal returns upon announcement that a …
Accounting Information Risk And Credit Ratings, Douglas Ray Ayres
Accounting Information Risk And Credit Ratings, Douglas Ray Ayres
Doctoral Dissertations
Using a sample of U.S. firms, this study explores whether accounting information risk has an impact upon corporate credit ratings, a long term measure of the cost of debt. Theory suggests that accounting information risk could impact shorter term measures of the cost of debt, but is unclear as to whether it will have measurable effects upon the long term cost of debt. This study employs SFAS 157 level three fair value disclosures as a proxy for accounting information risk. The findings suggest higher levels of accounting information risk negatively impact credit ratings. This is supported by both levels and …
Corruption In Bank Lending: The Role Of Timely Loan Loss Provisioning, B Atkins, Y Dou, Jeffrey Tee Yong Ng
Corruption In Bank Lending: The Role Of Timely Loan Loss Provisioning, B Atkins, Y Dou, Jeffrey Tee Yong Ng
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Building on the recent literature on corruption in bank lending, we examine the effect of country-level timely loan loss provisioning by banks on such corruption using a unique World Bankdataset that covers more than 3,600 firms across 44 countries. We find evidence consistent with timely loan loss provisions constraining lending corruption because it increases the likelihood of problem loans being uncovered earlier. This result is robust to using the tax-deductibility of loan loss provisions as an instrumental variable. In further analysis, we find timely loan loss provisioning less associated with reduced corruption in countries with deposit insurance schemes and significant …
An Exploration Of Income Characteristics: Analyzing Targets And Acquirers In Banking Mergers And Acquisitions, Stephanie S. Simpson
An Exploration Of Income Characteristics: Analyzing Targets And Acquirers In Banking Mergers And Acquisitions, Stephanie S. Simpson
Honors College Theses
With the large number of bank mergers occurring from 1990 to 2007, it is useful to know why acquirers chose to merge with these targeted entities. This research analyzes the income characteristics of targets and acquirers for this period to determine any indicators that distinguish an acquirer’s income structure from a target’s. To do this, income statement items from these banking entities are examined using factors such as size, serial or nonserial classification, and (for the targets only) public or private status. The research concludes that acquirers and targets indeed attain different income, cost, and efficiency characteristics.
F-35 And Military Spending, Colin J. Charpentier
F-35 And Military Spending, Colin J. Charpentier
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
How does the F-35 Lightning II multirole fighter compare to current military airplanes in terms of costs and capabilities? This is a comparison study based around the F-35 and five other planes. The F-35 is chosen because of its status as an ongoing project and due to its controversy as a plane. This study looks at all values. It is completely numeric based allowing for objective analysis. These planes chosen for study are the F-16 C/D, F/A-18 E/F, F-22A, AV-8B Harrier II, and A-10C. These planes are chosen because the F-35 is meant to replace them in the case of …

Happiness & Accounting/Finance Careers, Jacob Shrode
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
The research question I chose was "Do happiness levels vary among graduates with accounting majors who have chosen different career paths?" The method I used to get my data was a survey. Overall, the average happiness score from my survey was 4.72/6 (see table 4). The average happiness score in the U.S. is only 4.30. I did a t-test for this and got a p value of .00. With this, I can say that there is substantial evidence to suggest that people who graduate with accounting/finance majors tend to be significantly happier than the average U.S. person.

Current Developing Trend Of Sales Tax On E-Business, James G.S. Yang, Peter Lohrey, Leonard Lauricella
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article explores the development of sales tax on e-business. It points out that the problem was rooted in the fact that the seller is required to collect and remit the tax to the buyer's state government. If the seller and the buyer do not reside in the same state, the buyer's state government has no jurisdiction over the seller, unless there is a "physical presence" of the seller in the buyer's state. A state government can require an out-of-state seller to collect sales tax from the in-state buyer only when there is "physical presence." However, what constitutes "physical presence" …

This paper uses case studies and interview data to explore the relationship between control and new venture success/survival. A model of the new venture control process is distilled and explored in six new venture cases. The control processes were traced through an examination of the everyday language of venture principals to determine a grounded lower order model. Integrating these models into contingency theory locates strategic risk reduction choices as the crucial link between contingent variables and organizational control packages. In this sense the process of organizing is seen as a tiered process of risk reduction: successful firms analyze and control …

Market Pricing Of Banks’ Fair Value Assets Reported Under Sfas 157 Since The 2008 Financial Crisis, Beng Wee Goh, Dan Li, Jeffrey Ng, Keng Kevin Ow Yong
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We investigate how investors price the fair value estimates of assets as required by Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 157 (SFAS 157) since the financial crisis in 2008. We observe that Level 3 fair value estimates are typically priced lower than Level 1 and Level 2 fair value estimates between 2008 and 2011. However, the difference between the pricing of the different estimates reduces over time, suggesting that as market conditions stabilize in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, reliability concerns about Level 3 estimates dissipated to some extent. Next, we examine whether Level 3 gains affect the …
Ethical Implications Of The Affordable Care Act On Employment, Stephanie Anne Brown
Ethical Implications Of The Affordable Care Act On Employment, Stephanie Anne Brown
Capstone Research Projects
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has affected the decisions of many companies across America. Accountants in these companies are constantly concerned with lowering costs in order to increase profits. Firing full-time employees and hiring part-time replacements could help cut down on costs, but management's decisions not only impact the company, but the lives of their employees, their employee's families and the country's economic health. As a Christian accountant, one needs to realize the ethical impact of ACA to make informed decisions. This paper explores whether or not it is ethical for Christians to recommend that a company fire its staff …

Common Auditors In M&A Transactions, Ye Cai, Yongtae Kim, Jong Chool Park, Hal D. White
Accounting
We examine merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions in which the acquirer and the target share a common auditor. We predict that a common auditor can help merging firms reduce uncertainty throughout the acquisition process, which allows managers to more efficiently allocate their capital, resulting in higher quality M&As. Consistent with our prediction, we find that deals with common auditors have higher acquisition announcement returns than do non-common-auditor deals. Further, we find that the common-auditor effect is more pronounced for deals with greater pre-acquisition uncertainty and deals involving acquirers and targets that are audited by the same local office of the …
Economic Value Of Modeling Covariance Asymmetry For Mixed-Asset Portfolio Diversifications, Jian Zhou, Joseph Nicholson
Economic Value Of Modeling Covariance Asymmetry For Mixed-Asset Portfolio Diversifications, Jian Zhou, Joseph Nicholson
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Mounting evidence from the literature points to the existence of covariance asymmetry for financial assets. That is, conditional volatility and correlation of financial returns tend to rise more after negative return shocks than after positive ones of the same size. This paper extends the literature by investigating whether investors could gain significant economic benefits from incorporating the feature into mixed-asset portfolio diversifications. We carry out the investigation for a portfolio consisting of US stock, REITs, and the risk-free asset, and find that covariance asymmetry is indeed a value-added feature for mixed-asset diversifications. This conclusion is robust to different portfolio performance …
