Soft Skills In Stem, Mariana Sorroza Aguilar
Soft Skills In Stem, Mariana Sorroza Aguilar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Those working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields are delivering world-changing solutions to the problems we face and are saving lives every day. Some of them do surgeries, some design airplanes and cars, others study the wildlife around us, and others create processes to facilitate the manufacturing of devices we use often. In order to do this, the engineers, scientists, doctors, and other professionals in STEM disciplines need to possess hard skills. Hard skills are often called technical skills and are measurable abilities and skills that are needed to perform tasks effectively. The tasks done share something in …
Learning Through Business Unit Failure: A Study Of Individuals And Mid-Level Managers, Corinna Calhoun
Learning Through Business Unit Failure: A Study Of Individuals And Mid-Level Managers, Corinna Calhoun
Theses and Dissertations
Research on business failure focuses primarily on entrepreneurs and largely ignores individuals and mid-level managers who comprise most corporate populations. This study aimed to mitigate this gap by exploring how 15 individuals and mid-level managers working in a Fortune 50 technology company experienced failure and how their beliefs impacted their experience and learnings. Qualitative interview data were analyzed using a schema from the literature. The results suggested that emotional regulation, belief in personal agency, and separation of self from work supported learning and positive outcomes. Future research would create deeper insights into the social impacts on emotions and sensemaking and …
Before Turning Into Ashes: A Study Of Entrepreneurial Cognition, Learning, And Exit, Azadeh Zamanian
Before Turning Into Ashes: A Study Of Entrepreneurial Cognition, Learning, And Exit, Azadeh Zamanian
Theses and Dissertations
Entrepreneurial practices such as discovery, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities, decision-making, and problem solving are influenced by mental processes and cognitive mechanisms. Decision-making studies in the field of entrepreneurship confirm that entrepreneurs have strong tendency to use cognitive mechanisms such as biases and heuristics to simplify their decision-making processes. Compared to non-entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs show higher levels of cognitive bias.
By focusing on cognitive mechanisms of entrepreneurs, this study answers the question of why some individuals insist on continuing their entrepreneurial journey while failure-related phenomena such as critical setbacks and counterfactual thoughts exist.
Unlike the prior research that have focused on …
How Does Status Affect Performance And Learning From Failure? Evidence From Online Communities, Tengjian Zou
How Does Status Affect Performance And Learning From Failure? Evidence From Online Communities, Tengjian Zou
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation is composed of two essays. In the first essay, I investigate the factors that can alleviate the detrimental effect of hierarchy on team performance. I first show that hierarchy negatively impacts team performance, which is consistent with recent meta-analytic evidence. One mechanism that drives this negative effect is that hierarchy prevents low-ranking members from voicing their potentially valuable insights. Then I propose that team familiarity is one factor that can encourage low-ranking team members to speak up. I contend that team familiarity can be established either by team members’ prior experience in working with one another or can …
Three Essays On Firm Behaviors In Online Market Platforms, Erfan Rezvani
Three Essays On Firm Behaviors In Online Market Platforms, Erfan Rezvani
Doctoral Dissertations
Across many online market platforms, customer reviews have become a prevailing mechanism to evaluate firms and disseminate information about the quality of their products/services. While prior research has well-documented the impact of such customer-generated information on firm performance such as sales (e.g. Chevalier & Mayzlin 2006, Liu, 2006), understanding how firms react to customer evaluations generates an interesting yet an underexplored topic for research. This dissertation, through three studies, aims to investigate how customer reviews tat are posted on online platforms shape how firms learn, communicate, and compete. Chapter 1 shows that learning from own experience follows an inverted U-shaped …
Learning How To Learn, Kyle Duffie
Learning How To Learn, Kyle Duffie
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and create a discussion regarding the human science of learning. For the last two semesters, I have been involved in tutoring students in the principles of accounting. The key difference between these two semesters was my mindset towards learning. My first semester tutoring I taught “firing from the hip.” Simply answering questions or working problems myself and explaining them as I went along. And yes, I do believe this style of tutoring helped these students. Looking back however, I can’t help but think of myself as someone living in the 17th …
Strategies To Implement Succession Planning In A Nonprofit, Talecia Y. Parks
Strategies To Implement Succession Planning In A Nonprofit, Talecia Y. Parks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Surveys of nonprofit organizations conducted between 2004 and 2014 showed that 74% of the 6,923 leaders surveyed did not have a succession plan. In this qualitative single case study, the human capital theory was used as a guide to explore strategies used to implement a succession plan by 3 nonprofit leaders in a single nonprofit organization in a large metropolitan city in Southeastern Georgia. The participants were selected based on their implementation of succession plan strategies and geographical location. Semistructured interviews and document review were used to collect the data, which were analyzed using Yin's 5-step approach. Three themes emerged: …
Three Essays On Corporate Finance, Yuan Zhuang
Three Essays On Corporate Finance, Yuan Zhuang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
My dissertation aims to better understand managers and financial analysts’ behavior, incentives, and constraints, as well as their impacts on firm decisions and financial markets. In Chapter 1, I show that peer firms play an important role in determining U.S. corporate cash saving decisions. Using an instrument variable identification strategy, I find that one standard deviation change in peer firms average cash savings leads to a 2.63% same-direction change in firm’s own cash savings, which exceeds the marginal effects of many previously identified determinants. The economic implications of such peer effects are large, which can significantly alter cash savings in …
Improving Accounting Education, Frances Ruth Woolfolk
Improving Accounting Education, Frances Ruth Woolfolk
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines and explores the potential of active teaching methods inside and outside the classroom. This literature review analyzes studies of accounting programs in different countries including the United States. The previous literature suggest that students perform better through active methods of teaching, rather than the traditional form of teaching in accounting programs. The findings also suggest that active teaching methods better prepare students for field work in accounting versus the traditional teaching methods. This analysis has two implications for accounting education. First, it provides a deeper understanding for the need of experiential learning in accounting degree programs. Second, …
Managing Organizational Learning Ambidexterity: An Exploratory Study Of Australian Large Service Organizations, Agung N. L. I. Fahrudi
Managing Organizational Learning Ambidexterity: An Exploratory Study Of Australian Large Service Organizations, Agung N. L. I. Fahrudi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Organizational ambidexterity is about developing necessary organizational capabilities to compete in new and changing markets that enable organizations to survive in the face of dynamic external environments. It is about finding a balance between exploring new knowledge and exploiting existing knowledge or capabilities. The research on ambidexterity has offered different mechanisms for pursuing ambidexterity, and has highlighted the pivotal role of organizations’ senior teams and leadership behaviors in balancing the conflicting demands of exploration and exploitation. Research has also shown that no universal best practices should be sought to resolve the dilemma but instead leaders need to understand the situational …
Effective Strategies Of Military Veteran Small Business Owners, John F. Groves
Effective Strategies Of Military Veteran Small Business Owners, John F. Groves
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses owned by military veterans represent a source of new jobs, yet more than half of these businesses fail to survive beyond 5 years. These failures could lead to efforts to identify strategies that owners can use to avoid failure. The conceptual framework applied in this case study was the triple-loop learning theory. The purposive sampling included 7 military veterans who were small business owners who had sustained their small businesses more than 5 years. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and organization documents. Yin's 5-step process for data analysis compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding resulted in 4 …
Managing Learning In The Workplace: A Study Of The Perceptions And Practice Of Local Government Managers, Jenna Rogers
Managing Learning In The Workplace: A Study Of The Perceptions And Practice Of Local Government Managers, Jenna Rogers
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In 1995 the Australian Government commissioned the report Enterprising Nation ‘: renewing Australia’s managers to meet the challenges of the Asia-Pacific century (Karpin, 1995), which emphasised the change that was necessary in Australian business to remain competitive in the global and growing economy. The development of flexible organisational cultures, where managers increasingly displayed leadership and developed their staff to generate innovative cultures, was a central premise of the Karpin Report Task Force’s vision. Twenty years later, this study explored the extent to which managers have moved from being ‘cops to coaches’ and integrated the facilitation of employee learning within …
Examining The Application Of Experiential Learning Techniques Across Sport Management Programs, Elizabeth Sattler
Examining The Application Of Experiential Learning Techniques Across Sport Management Programs, Elizabeth Sattler
Theses and Dissertations
The Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) has identified experiential learning projects as an integral element to be included in sport management curriculum (COSMA, 2016). However, often the experiential learning opportunities offered by sport management programs are limited to a required internship experience (Foster & Dollar, 2010). While internship programs have been widely accepted and implemented by sport management programs (Eagleman & McNary, 2010), there is little evidence of the implementation of other experiential learning practices within sport management programs. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to investigate the widespread application of experiential learning practices of sport management faculty. …
Organizational Learning: The Path To Growth, Rachael M. Huang
Organizational Learning: The Path To Growth, Rachael M. Huang
Scripps Senior Theses
Organizational learning is a topic that has been widely studied under a number of different approaches. The common, essential themes that are present in any theory of organizational leaning reflect the necessity of balancing explorative and exploitative tendencies within organizations. Organizational learning is the key to organizational effectiveness and development, and involves a collective action and mindset that allows for the reflection of current processes and the reevaluation of the efficiency of these processes within organizational structures. In this way, knowledge is embedded into organizational systems so that continuous learning can be implemented on an organizational scale. As a result, …
An Evaluation Of Game Fiction-Enhanced Training: Using Narrative To Improve Trainee Reactions And Learning, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
An Evaluation Of Game Fiction-Enhanced Training: Using Narrative To Improve Trainee Reactions And Learning, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Gamification is growing in popularity in instructional contexts like education and workplace training, but it is unclear which game elements are specifically conducive to improve learning outcomes. Narratives, which represent one way the game element “game fiction” is commonly implemented, have been used to improve learning outcomes over expository texts in the context of psycholinguistics, whereas the Technology-Enhanced Training Effectiveness Model (TETEM) proposes that certain individual differences impact the relationships between technology-enhanced training and learning outcomes. From this theoretical basis, this study gamified a training session with game fiction in order to improve reactions to training and learning over the …
Learning During The Transition Period: How Identifying Executives As Designate Ceos Affects Their Learning, Rida Mitri Elias
Learning During The Transition Period: How Identifying Executives As Designate Ceos Affects Their Learning, Rida Mitri Elias
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
CEO succession is an important event in organizations. Around 80% of succession events are relay successions, where a CEO successor is identified a few years before the actual succession event takes place. The success of relay succession compared to horse race and outside successions has been credited to the learning that an heir apparent acquires during the transition period. However, to my knowledge, none of the CEO succession research examines the learning process of heirs apparent.
This study attempts to fill this gap through empirical qualitative research. Using a combination of learning and sensemaking perspectives, this study builds premises proposing …

Manager Learning In The Micro Business Context : The Role Of External Business Advice, Training Providers And Close Others, Jennifer Devine
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Small business has often been referred to as the “engine driving the economy”. This description highlights the significance of small business to the economy of most countries. But what about the smallest of these organisations; those businesses with fewer than five employees? These businesses, termed micro businesses, form a large part of our economy and are sometimes the starting point for larger business and sometimes provide a long term, alternate business structure. This type of business has special needs and characteristics and is often neglected in the management literature. The nature and diversity of these businesses prompted an interest in …

The professional nurse’s role focuses on two distinct provisions of expert care involving the science and art of caring for patients. Nurses must attain and maintain a high level of scientific, clinical expertise. In addition, nurses must continuously seek to understand, relate to and connect with the patients with whom they work whether it is at the hospital bedside or in other arenas where healthcare services are provided. The nurse plays a critical role in supporting patients through their most vulnerable times by empathizing and understanding where they are and where they want and need to be from a physiological …
