Uc: Ubiquitous Collaboration Platform For Multimodal Team Interaction Support, Veton Z. Kepuska, Sabri Gurbuz, Walter Rodriguez, Stephen M. Fiore, Deborah Carstens, Patrick D. Converse, David Metcalf

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A human-centered computing platform that improves teamwork and transforms the “human- computer interaction experience” for distributed teams is presented. This Ubiquitous Collaboration, or uC (“you see”), platform's objective is to transform distributed teamwork (i.e., work occurring when teams of workers and learners are geographically dispersed and often interacting at different times). It achieves this goal through a multimodal team interaction interface realized through a reconfigurable open architecture. The approach taken is to integrate: (1) an intuitive speech- and video-centric multi-modal interface to augment more conventional methods (e.g., mouse, stylus and touch), (2) an open and reconfigurable architecture supporting information gathering, …

Developing Collaborative Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Change Toward Greater Collaboration And Shared Leadership, Jonathan Tyler Clark Jan 2008

Developing Collaborative Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Change Toward Greater Collaboration And Shared Leadership, Jonathan Tyler Clark

Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses

Implicit in leadership behavior is the ability to work with others, to be in relationship, and to collaborate. Contemporary theories about leadership have shifted from a focus on the individual “leader” toward the collective act of “leadership.” A concrete understanding of collaborative leadership remains somewhat underdeveloped in the literature and theoretically. This dissertation is a case study of organization's efforts to change from autocratic organizational leadership to a more collaborative working environment. Taking the form of a literary portrait, the study analyzes an example of action learning about collaborative leadership. The portrait will be of the agency's change, with special …

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara Jan 2008

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara

Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses

As evidence of the earth’s limited capacity to sustain human life mounts, institutions of higher education are being looked to for leadership in the effort to educate students about environmental concerns and support the development of sustainable innovations. Colleges and universities are responding to this call for leadership by starting and/or expanding environmental research programs, integrating sustainability issues throughout the curriculum, adopting sustainable operations, and building green facilities. Reflecting upon the sustainability efforts of these institutions, this research study explores the following questions: What factors are essential for initiating and leading a successful change effort to foster sustainability in higher …

Understanding Service Quality And Relationship Quality In Is Outsourcing: Client Orientation & Promotion, Project Management Effectiveness, And The Task-Technology-Structure Fit, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten, Kenneth W. Green Dec 2007

Understanding Service Quality And Relationship Quality In Is Outsourcing: Client Orientation & Promotion, Project Management Effectiveness, And The Task-Technology-Structure Fit, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten, Kenneth W. Green

Subrata Chakrabarty

A national survey of firms that participated in outsourcing relationships was conducted, and service quality and relationship quality were found to be significantly and positively related to each other and both had a significant impact on user satisfaction. However, the intricacies of the causal effects between the two autonomous constructs, service quality and relationship quality, are a source of interest. In post-analysis theory building, we give a conceptual model that proposes that the positive causal effect of service quality on relationship quality would be positively moderated by the client orientation and promotion effectiveness of the vendor, while the positive causal …

Rationales For Collaboration; Implications For The Irish Road Freight Industry, Eoin Plant, Jim Mcgovern Jun 2007

Rationales For Collaboration; Implications For The Irish Road Freight Industry, Eoin Plant, Jim Mcgovern

Conference Papers

The European Union has made a commitment to promoting sustainable mobility through advanced transport logistics. One of the principal areas yet to be addressed is that of the potential barriers to advanced transport logistics and the attitudes of industry to this advancement. This paper addresses some of these concerns and argues that competition for high-value contracts can be very tough, especially where the contracts are from large organisations that often prefer to develop a relationship with only one transport service provider. The paper attempts to put the research into a theoretical framework of Resource-Advantage Theory. Empirical evidence is presented from …

Collaborative Tool Kit For Educational Sector And Delivery Of Tool Kit To Education Summit In March 2007., Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly

Malcolm Fraser

Inter-firm collaboration is now recognized to be a primary driver of competitiveness and performance, where the rise of interconnected and interdependent networks act as complex adaptive systems giving rise to the fundamental requirement to collaborate. However, the process of establishing and maintaining strong and fruitful collaboration between firms is not well understood and as a result most attempts to manufacture such associations fail. The project provided a tool kit that will support successful collaborative international go-to-market initiatives by New Zealand academic institutions and commercial enterprises.

Case Study Röhm Gmbh & Co. Kg - Consignment Depot Between Degussa Business Unit “Röhm“ And Basf Coatings Ag, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Röhm produces special plastics, for, among others, the paint industry. In collaboration with BSAF Coatings, Röhm developed an extended Vendor Managed Inventory system that operates a consignment depot, takes on the actual and exact filling of tanks at the customer locations via telemetrics as well as advance forecasts, and passes on quality-related information to designated recipients, and includes the electronic billing of deliveries. The early access to data relevant to the planning process and process simplifications compensated for the additional operating costs. The closer relationship with the customer and their processes, as in the case of L’Oréal, is considered to …

Politics And Collaboration During Npd Projects, Elias Kyriazis, Graham Massey Jan 2006

Politics And Collaboration During Npd Projects, Elias Kyriazis, Graham Massey

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Effective cross-functional relationships (CFRs) are a key success factor in developing successful new products for many companies. This paper adds to our existing knowledge on the Marketing/R&D CFR by examining the effects of communication behaviours, micropolitics and interpersonal trust on the dependent variable, interpersonal collaborative behaviour during NPD activities. Interpersonal collaboration is seen as a higher level of working relationship which incorporates a "volitional" and "trusting" aspect to working relationships. Our findings reveal that the perception of the Marketing Manager as a political ally has a positive effects on interpersonal collaborative behaviour. Further, affect-based trust has a strong effect on …

Understanding Sustainable Tourism Development From A Complex Systems Perspective: A Case Study Of The Swan River, Western Australia, Janine R. Mcdonald Jan 2006

Understanding Sustainable Tourism Development From A Complex Systems Perspective: A Case Study Of The Swan River, Western Australia, Janine R. Mcdonald

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Tourism does not operate in a predictable and mechanistic environment and is influenced by unpredictable circumstances. Influences include underlying values and perceptions keeping the system unpredictable and dynamic. Tourism that utilises natural resources is exposed to the additional unpredictability of natural changes and activities and/or decisions of other stakeholders. Tourism research generally adopts reductionist approaches and has not effectively understood tourism as a stakeholder within a complex system of stakeholders. Reductionist approaches have led to interpretations of sustainable tourism development being highly focused and sector specific limiting understanding of the complex systems in which tourism operates and resulting in narrow …

Collaborative Examinations In Asyncronous Learning Networks : Field Experiments On Collaborative Learning Through Online Assessments, Jia Shen May 2005

Collaborative Examinations In Asyncronous Learning Networks : Field Experiments On Collaborative Learning Through Online Assessments, Jia Shen

Dissertations

With the proliferation of computer networks and the emergence of virtual teams, learning and knowledge sharing in the online environment has become an increasingly important topic. Applying constructivism and collaborative learning theories to assessment, the collaborative online exam is designed featuring students' active participation in various phases of the exam process through small group activities online. A participatory online exam process is designed featuring similar procedures except that students' involvement in each phase of the exam is individual. The collaborative online exam and the participatory online exam are investigated regarding student exam study strategies, group process, exam outcomes, faculty satisfaction, …

Interorganizational Dynamics In Collaboration In University-Industry Research Projects: Context, Politics And Social Construction, Michael Zanko, Richard Badham, Karin H. Garrety

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

University-industry partnerships (UIPs) are widely viewed as essential in leveraging research capability and economic performance in organizations and the nation as a whole. In Australia, as in many other countries, the national government commits significant funds to such ‘strategic’ collaborations. Despite this interest, there is still a relatively poor understanding of the interorganizational dynamics of these industry and university partnerships and their projects. This paper examines such dynamics by focusing on a management-related research project we were involved in negotiating and undertaking with industry partner managers over a four-year period. Of particular relevance was the complex interplay between UIP politics, …

Collaboration In Supply Chain: A Multi-Agent Approach, Xin Li, Sim K. Lau Jan 2005

Collaboration In Supply Chain: A Multi-Agent Approach, Xin Li, Sim K. Lau

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Supply chain collaboration has become a critical success factor for supply chain management. Supply chain collaboration builds on information sharing, collaborative planning and execution. Many information systems have been developed for supply chain management. However, these systems do not sufficiently support collaborative supply chain. Recently, intelligent agent technology has received a great potential in supporting transparency in information flows and modeling the dynamic supply chain for collaborative supply chain. This paper explores the similarities between multi-agent system and supply chain to investigate the appropriateness of multi-agent based technology to model supply chain system and support collaborative supply chain planning and …

Organizational Cultures Of Libraries As A Strategic Resource, Michelle L. Kaarst-Brown, Scott Nicholson, Gisela M. Von Dran, Jeffrey M. Stanton Jan 2004

Organizational Cultures Of Libraries As A Strategic Resource, Michelle L. Kaarst-Brown, Scott Nicholson, Gisela M. Von Dran, Jeffrey M. Stanton

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Theorists have suggested that organizational culture is a strategic resource that has value in ensuring the continuing existence and success of organizations (Michalisin, Smith, & Kline, 1997; Barney, 1986, 1991; Hult, Ketchen, & Nichols, 2002; Gordon, 1985). This assertion is supported by various studies that have linked organizational culture to broad strategic outcomes such as an organization’s ability to manage knowledge (Davenport, Long, & Beers, 1998; Storck & Hill, 2000), innovation capability (Hauser, 1998), and strategic management of information technology (Kaarst-Brown & Robey, 1999; Reich & Benbasat, 2000; Schein, 1985). Based on this research, we suggest that there are characteristics …

Fallstudie L'Oréal - Vendor Managed Inventory Zwischen L’Oréal Und ”Dm Drogerie-Markt“, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Fallstudie Brose Fahrzeugtechnik Gmbh & Co. Kg - Verbesserung Des Anfrageprozesses Im Einkauf Der Brose Fahrzeugtechnik Gmbh & Co. Kg, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Manuelle Erfassungen konventioneller Angebote entfallen.

Fallstudie Röhm - Konsignationslager Zwischen Dem Degussa Geschäftsbereich Röhm Und Der Basf Coatings Ag, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Collaboration Among Smes As A Mechanism For Innovation: An Empirical Study, Mario J. B. Franco Jan 2003

Collaboration Among Smes As A Mechanism For Innovation: An Empirical Study, Mario J. B. Franco

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

The interest for collaboration among small and mediumsized enterprises and innovation has been highlighted, in recent times, due to the acceleration of technological changes and to increasing international competitiveness. Many small firms, with rigid structures and weak entrepreneurial dynamics, experienced difficulties in becoming innovators. Some of these firms can adopt collaborative agreements because these relationships enable them to get the necessary innovative activities, know-how, and exploit opportunities, which they cannot achieve alone. This study examines the motives for the formation of collaborative agreements in industrial Portuguese SMEs and presents some empirical evidence concerning collaboration as an important vehicle for the …
