Cui Bono? The Selective Revealing Of Knowledge And Its Implications For Innovative Activity, Oliver Alexy, Gerard George, Ammon J. Salter
Cui Bono? The Selective Revealing Of Knowledge And Its Implications For Innovative Activity, Oliver Alexy, Gerard George, Ammon J. Salter
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Current theories of how organizations harness knowledge for innovative activity cannot convincingly explain emergent practices whereby firms selectively reveal knowledge to their advantage. We conceive of selective revealing as a strategic mechanism to reshape the collaborative behavior of other actors in a firm's innovation ecosystem. We propose that selective revealing may provide an effective alternative to known collaboration mechanisms, particularly under conditions of high partner uncertainty, high coordination costs, and unwilling potential collaborators. We specify conditions when firms are more likely to reveal knowledge and highlight some boundary conditions for competitor reciprocity. We elaborate on strategies that allow firms to …
Understanding Collaborative Dynamics: A Critical Review And Inductive Investigation, Amydee Mackley Fawcett
Understanding Collaborative Dynamics: A Critical Review And Inductive Investigation, Amydee Mackley Fawcett
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Collaboration has been a topic of discussion for over 20 years. Managers are consistently calling for better collaboration and researchers have argued that managing tightly coupled relationships creates a co-mingling of complementary competencies that establishes distinctive advantages for firms. Even though there have been a few exemplar companies that have been capable of truly developing these complementary competencies, few companies truly understand the dynamics of a collaborative capability. This dissertation reviews the theoretical conceptualization and operationalization of tightly coupled relationships and through an interpretive analysis, begins to provide clarity to the following questions:
* Under what conditions are tightly coupled …
Engaging And Expanding Communities: Widening The Circle Of Stakeholders, Lisa Deangelis, Maureen A. Scully, Andrea Wight
Engaging And Expanding Communities: Widening The Circle Of Stakeholders, Lisa Deangelis, Maureen A. Scully, Andrea Wight
Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects
The 32 fellows in the 2013 Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) worked with community partners to investigate the theme, “Engaging and Expanding Communities".
They worked with six community partners, and identified ways to help them expand beyond their core stakeholders to a wider circle of stakeholders and broader potential impact. The fellows gave their time and professional skills to understand how to reach new business partners, new participants, new advisors, and new donors. They conducted surveys, interviews, and focus groups; explored social media options; examined best practices; and considered ways to tell powerful stories about the vitally important work of the …
Collaborative Benefits And Coordination Costs: Learning And Capability Development In Science, M. Onal Vural, Linus Dahlander, Gerard George
Collaborative Benefits And Coordination Costs: Learning And Capability Development In Science, M. Onal Vural, Linus Dahlander, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine the effects of team structure and experience on the impact of inventions produced by scientific teams. Whereas multidisciplinary, collaborative teams have become the norm in scientific production, there are coordination costs commensurate with managing such teams. We use patent citation analysis to examine the effect of prior collaboration and patenting experience on invention impact of 282 patents granted in human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research from 1998 to 2010. Our results reveal that team experience outside the domain may be detrimental to project performance in a setting where the underlying knowledge changes. In stem cell science, we show …
Effect Of Social Media On Crowdfunding Project Results, Alexey Moisseyev
Effect Of Social Media On Crowdfunding Project Results, Alexey Moisseyev
Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research from the College of Business
Crowdfunding is a form of collaborative social media. Even though crowdfunding can function without social media, this phenomenon has developed greatly with the advance of social media. The studies in entrepreneurship and finance established connections between startup projects and social ties. However, the impact of social media on crowdfunding is still lightly studied in academic literature.
The purpose of this thesis is to define the influence of social media on crowdfunding. In particular, this research studies the connections between social media assets such as the social media followers and the social media seals of approval and crowdfunding results such as …
Creative Collaboration: Maximizing Resources For Multi-Collection Exhibits, Jillian M. Slater, Nichole M. Rustad
Creative Collaboration: Maximizing Resources For Multi-Collection Exhibits, Jillian M. Slater, Nichole M. Rustad
Marian Library Faculty Presentations
This presentation illustrates the collaborative, multi-format approach used in preparing an exhibit of archival materials on the 1913 Dayton flood at the University of Dayton Libraries. Originally formed due to the absence of a University Archivist, the small planning committee was able to combine areas of expertise including archives, history, graphic design, video/audio production, marketing, and digitization. The collaborative process facilitated a creative approach resulting in a unique, interactive exhibit utilizing audio, video, original materials, reproductions, a permanent digital component, and a discussion panel event. The presenters will also discuss how the planning committee maximized available resources (without a budget) …

Lleap Dialogue Series (No.2) : A Practical Guide To Grow Your Ideas For Maximum Impact, Michelle Anderson, Emma Curtin
Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy (LLEAP)
This Guide, number 2 in the series, has been designed as a user friendly tool that could be used by different groups within education and philanthropy to suit their needs (e.g. in the training of philanthropic program managers in education; in the development of educational projects in schools; or supporting school-philanthropic-not-for-profit collaborations). Included are two ‘think pieces’ around collaboration: one on socially intelligent schools by Bill Lucas; the other on philanthropy and Indigenous education by Tony Dreise. These are followed by frameworks and guiding principles; and specific tools, tips and strategies for improving collaboration and engagement. Fifteen cases are also …
Coaching And Cross Disciplinary Collaboration: More Complexity And Chaos?, Gordon Spence
Coaching And Cross Disciplinary Collaboration: More Complexity And Chaos?, Gordon Spence
Gordon B Spence
In this article, the author reflects on the cross-disciplinary approach of working. It is stated that coaching psychologists are not well equipped for working as their theories are based on linear empiricism and focus on prediction and control rather than engagement with unpredictable emergent and ongoing processes. It is suggested the complexity should be learned through an array of different perspectives.
Memory Game To Demonstrate The Power Of Collaborative Efforts To Improve Team Performance, Mari W. Buche
Memory Game To Demonstrate The Power Of Collaborative Efforts To Improve Team Performance, Mari W. Buche
College of Business Publications
Collaboration is an important aspect of information systems (IS) education since work is typically performed in teams. However, IS students often do not fully appreciate the value of group work in their business courses. This teaching tip describes an activity that will objectively demonstrate the value of collaboration and diversity of perspectives, while simultaneously satisfying the preferences of visual and experiential learning styles. Knowledge gained through collaborative and cooperative learning tends to be retained for an extended period of time. The author includes discussion prompts to help guide students as they identify the value of diverse perspectives in team settings, …

The Role Of The Design Coach - A Novel Approach To Achieving 360 Collaboration Between Industry And Higher Education, Lee E. J Styger, Ian Ellis
Sydney Business School - Papers
There is significant latent design talent within the broader business community, however, much of the design potential is isolated, and, lacks the necessary focus to manifest positive commercial outcomes. Research has indicated that this situation is due to a myopic design development process that is typically caused by the lack of larger team dynamics, reporting structures, and more formal review and feedback processes. The role of the coach is well established in business environments, where, a specialist practitioner enables an environment that supports personal and operational development. Unfortunately the concept of the design coach is not as well established because, …

Achieving Synergy With Collaborative Problem Solving: The Value Of System Analysis, Douglas Easterling, Elizabeth Mayfield Arnold, Jessica A. Jones, Allen J. Smart
Achieving Synergy With Collaborative Problem Solving: The Value Of System Analysis, Douglas Easterling, Elizabeth Mayfield Arnold, Jessica A. Jones, Allen J. Smart
The Foundation Review
· Collaborative problem solving has a long and important tradition in philanthropy. While there are notable success stories, it is clear that large-scale impact does not occur by simply bringing various stakeholders together around a common agenda and then offering them funding for planning and implementation.
· One of the most critical ingredients is a high-leverage strategy, which in turn requires a coherent understanding of the system that surrounds the problem.
· Reclaiming Futures, a national initiative aimed at promoting juvenile-justice reform at the local level, explicitly promotes system-level problem-solving by offering a conceptual framework that each site uses to …
Four Network Principles For Collaboration Success, Jane Wei-Skillern, Nora Silver
Four Network Principles For Collaboration Success, Jane Wei-Skillern, Nora Silver
The Foundation Review
· This article identifies a set of four counterintuitive principles that are critical to collaboration success and offers insights for how nonprofit leaders can ensure that their collaborations can have an impact that is dramatically greater than the sum of the individual parts.
· Based on a decade of research developing detailed case studies on a range of successful networks, the authors have identified a common pattern of factors that are essential to effective networking.
· The principles are: focus on mission before organization; manage through trust, not control; promote others, not yourself; and build constellations, not stars.
Getting To Collective Impact: How Funders Can Contribute Over The Life Course Of The Work, Douglas Easterling
Getting To Collective Impact: How Funders Can Contribute Over The Life Course Of The Work, Douglas Easterling
The Foundation Review
· Foundations have a long tradition of convening and funding collaborative groups with the hope that this will lead to large-scale impact.
· Although funder-driven collaboration sometimes leads to breakthrough solutions, foundations have also pushed the participating organizations into artificial, awkward, and unsustainable efforts.
· This article argues that funders should support naturally emerging networks and should tailor their support to match the network’s stage of development.
· A five-stage developmental model is introduced and illustrated through a case study of the Central Appalachian Network (CAN).
· Over CAN’s 20-year history, a succession of regional and national foundations have played …
Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork, Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam
Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork, Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam
Department of Enterprise Systems and Analytics Faculty Publications
In this study, we investigate students’ awareness and usage of collaboration and communication technologies (CCTs). Coordination and communication are two of the key processes for effective teamwork that have been identified in the literature. We find significant differences in awareness of CCTs between various student groups. However, when controlling for awareness, we find no difference in usage. While the proportion of students that are aware of various CCTs is high, the reported usage of CCTs is low. Because of the increased emphasis on teamwork, students need to be taught the technologies they need to use for collaboration and communication in …
Competition Or Collaboration? The Effect Of Non-Profit Brand Image On Volunteer Recruitment Strategy, Melanie Randle, Friedrich Leisch, Sara Dolnicar
Competition Or Collaboration? The Effect Of Non-Profit Brand Image On Volunteer Recruitment Strategy, Melanie Randle, Friedrich Leisch, Sara Dolnicar
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
With increasing numbers of non-profit organizations and higher demand for a wider range of social services, the need for volunteers has never been greater. There is general agreement that competition within the sector is increasing, and this has led to organizations placing greater emphasis on building strong brand images to differentiate themselves from competitors. However, there are also many instances where non-profits have successfully collaborated with each other to achieve efficiencies and meet objectives. The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine, which of these approaches - competition or collaboration - is more appropriate for the challenge of volunteer …

Partnerships between Hospitals and Community: A Qualitative Study on Collaboration for Spiritual Care in Healthcare
Abstract:
Hospital-Community Collaborative (HCC) arrangements for the provision of spiritual care have been brokered in certain Ontario hospitals with varying degrees of success. The current study investigated how a community based organization could effectively partner with a healthcare institution to ensure spiritual care support for hospital patients. It asked the question: What factors are essential to make a hospital-community collaboration function well as a model for the provision of spiritual care? Qualitative research was conducted with four hospital corporations with HCC partnerships to ascertain the …
