Weak Identification In Nonlinear Econometric Models, Lee C. Adkins Oct 2022

Weak Identification In Nonlinear Econometric Models, Lee C. Adkins

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The Belsley, Kuh, and Welch Belsley et al. (1980) diagnostics are applied to the precision estimator in nonlinear models and the properties are explored via simulation. The performance of the diagnostics is examined specifically with the ordered probit model. The performance is examined under several parameterizations and under different degrees of collinearity. The results suggest that the identification of the model’s parameters is indeed related to collinearity of the data and by the parametric functional form of the model itself. The BKW diagnostics appear to be useful in the sense that serious problems with identification can be detected quite easily …

Media Influence Through What Is Reported And How It Is Reported, Tammy Parker Johnston, Veronika Humphries

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Living in the digital age certainly has its advantages but presents challenges to the basic principles of integrity, honesty, and truthfulness. Media bias can be detected by reviewing the list of trending and widely discussed topics shared by media outlets. The news presented can often be identified as leaning towards one of the three political spectrums: right-wing, left-wing, or center. The infiltration of political bias within the media influences public opinion.

Optimal Economies Of Scope In The Residential Real Estate Brokerage Industry, Danielle Lewis Jul 2022

Optimal Economies Of Scope In The Residential Real Estate Brokerage Industry, Danielle Lewis

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Recent studies of scale economies on residential real estate brokerages, using an efficient frontier, find increasing returns to scale for nearly the entire range of brokerage sizes, as measured by revenue units.1 However, the lower per unit cost of producing listing and sales may partially be explained by economies of scope. Economies of scope exist if producing sales and listings jointly in a single brokerage firm is more cost efficient than producing them in two separate brokerage firms that specialize. This study seeks to identify the inefficiencies in real estate brokerage. This is accomplished by first estimating economies of scope …

Part-Time Participation Among Married Women Who Work In The Market, Tong Zeng

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

This paper explores how age influences the married women's decision to choose part-time jobs. For married women, especially young married women with significant household responsibilities, part-time employment provides an important way for joining in the labor market and pursuing career and occupational goals. The empirical results show that the number of children, the presence of children under six years old and the husband's wage rate increase the married woman's decision to work part-time.

“Fiscal Trap”, The Case Of Greece, Titos Ritsatos Jul 2022

“Fiscal Trap”, The Case Of Greece, Titos Ritsatos

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Present research aims at the introduction of the term “Fiscal Trap” in economic literature, as a comprehensive definition of the economic situation in which any available combination of fiscal-only policy measures (tax increases and austerity measures), would fail to fulfill fiscal targets during periods of recession. Using recent experience from the case of Greece, an ex-post evaluation of adopted policy effectiveness is pursued. Fiscal austerity and increased taxation enforced in Greece during the years 2009-2012, resulted in decreased tax revenues, lower GDP and increased debt-to-GDP ratio. In order to slip away from the vicious cycle generated by austerity and tax …

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards Jul 2022

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

While the original framework by Arthur Laffer focused on tax rates and the resulting revenue from such taxation, the Laffer curve has been applied to other studies in behavior as well. This paper details evidence of a Laffer curve in Iraq with respect to terrorist violence and Iraqi public support of that violence against the U.S.-led coalition forces. As insurgents began killing more Iraqi citizens in their attacks on U.S.-led forces, the increased lethality caused initial support of such violence to erode. As a result, the high-level terrorist hierarchy has suggested that its operatives reduce lethality and indiscriminate bombings.

Grattan’s Strategic Review: The Process of Strategy Formulation in Complex Organisations (2011), by focusing on one major implied question emerging from the title of the book: “Is the Process of Strategy Formulation Different in Complex Organizations?” The author first examines the theoretical contents of Grattan’s book relative to existing and emerging literature on the strategic process by examining several theories discussed therein. The author examines the purpose and functions of strategy formulation in general and then discusses the contents of each of Grattan’s chapters as they relate this process applied to the Strategic Defence Review …

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

This paper examines the recent April 2014 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the state of Michigan’s constitutional amendment banning the use of race as an affirmative action tool in selecting admissions to the state’s public universities. The 6-2 ruling in the case of Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action has been hailed by some as a major step in the unraveling of the policy of Affirmative Action on a permanent basis.

Do Incentives For Reit Executives Improve Efficiency?, Danielle Lewis, Dek Terrell Jul 2022

Do Incentives For Reit Executives Improve Efficiency?, Danielle Lewis, Dek Terrell

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Using 1998-2005 EXECUCOMP data on Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) CEOs, this study addresses some of the issues that arise when modeling CEO incentive-based compensation. The purpose is to investigate how profit efficiencies are impacted by CEO compensation and their composition of pay packages. Since a disproportionate amount of a REITs expenses are executive compensation related, this issue is particularly important. Much of the literature focuses on estimating the impact of firm and CEO characteristics on CEO compensation. We consider the more direct question of whether total CEO compensation or the mix of compensation affects profit efficiency.

The Effects Of Religious Freedom Laws On Employment , Small-Minority-Owned Businesses And Minority Populations, Carl Enomoto, Jazmine Brantley, Sajid A. Noor

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Twenty states have now passed religious freedom laws to protect religious practices and beliefs. While many individuals and groups believe these laws are necessary to protect them from government intervention that may take away their rights, there are others who fear that these laws can be used by businesses to discriminate against the LGBT community in the name of religion. In a recent case in Indiana, several large corporations voiced their dissent over the state’s impending religious freedom law, causing the Governor to sign a new version of the bill. The purpose of this paper is to determine how these …

A Review Of Subculture And Its Role In Marketing, Jamie Pleasant Jun 2022

A Review Of Subculture And Its Role In Marketing, Jamie Pleasant

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

This paper reviews the term subculture and the impact that it has in marketing that is often overlooked by practitioners in their decision making. Subcultural influences have been thoroughly researched in psychological and social fields of study. However, it has been ignored and given little consideration in real world marketplace decision making. As marketing borrows many theories of consumer behavior from the aforementioned fields, it only makes sense to critically acknowledge and exercise sound subcultural theory when it comes to strategic and tactical decision making in a real world environment. Understanding what subculture is and how it is defined is …

Thus, this study's intent is not to provide a tool for assessing the value of individual homes.

Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng Jun 2022

Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The idea of central bank independence (CBI) has been widely accepted over the last several decades by many countries around the world, both developed and developing. As such, many countries around the world granted autonomy to their central banks during the 1980s and 1990s. Although the majority of past studies have primarily examined the impact of central bank independence on inflation, there is only now sufficient date to empirically determine whether many of these claims are true. This study examines central bank independence over the long-term (1960 to 2015) to determine to what extent central bank independence has helped to …

The Impact Of Welfare Reform On Rates Of Abortion, Rand Ressler, Melissa S. Waters, Carter Hill Jun 2022

The Impact Of Welfare Reform On Rates Of Abortion, Rand Ressler, Melissa S. Waters, Carter Hill

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Many studies have shown that some rather personal decisions have been influenced by the generosity of a state’s welfare program. Ozawa (1989), Caudill and Mixon (1993), and Clark and Strauss (1998) have all established a positive relationship between the level of financial support to unwed mothers and rates of fertility. Of course, having children is the result of having unprotected sexual relations. Such relations can lead to other outcomes besides the birth of a child. Ressler et al. (2005) and Ressler et al. (2006) found a positive link between the generosity of a state’s welfare payments and contraction rates of …

Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Sox) And Corporate Risk Management, Yuqi Gu, Wenjuan Yuan Jun 2022

Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Sox) And Corporate Risk Management, Yuqi Gu, Wenjuan Yuan

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Prior studies have found mixed relationship between corporate risk management activities and firm value. In this paper, we document that corporate risk management activities are significantly affected by the strength of corporate governance. Firms use significantly less derivatives after the passage of SOX, i.e., when the corporate governance is stronger. The passage of SOX allows us to implement the difference-in-differences approach and mitigate endogeneity bias. The relation is both statistically and economically significant. Our findings shed new light on the agency problem associated with the risk management activities.

Guess Who Is Not Using Mobile Money In Sub-Saharan Africa?, Aparna Gosavi Jun 2022

Guess Who Is Not Using Mobile Money In Sub-Saharan Africa?, Aparna Gosavi

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Mobile money, which is a mobile-phone-based service, sends and/or receives money across a wide geographical area with just a touch of a mobile-phone button. This particular financial product was initially introduced in Kenya in the early part of 2007. Within the first six months of its introduction in Kenya, more than two million people enrolled for the service, partly because the utility emerged as a handy tool for urban migrants to send money back home to their families who resided in villages. This overwhelming response to the service was mainly because of its convenience, safety, and speed. Now, in Sub-Saharan …

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The economic consequences of a First Nations response to Enbridge and the voicing of concerns over the violation of human rights resulting from the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline are examined. Despite overwhelming opposition and contrary to indigenous rights, the proposed pipeline was to cross more than 50 territories claimed by First Nations. The pipeline would transverse through unique ecosystems that are home to endangered species, and tankers would travel through one of the largest undeveloped temperate rainforests in the world. Given Enbridge’s history with oil spills and environmental violations, potential future oil spills are a serious concern. Because of these …

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang Jun 2022

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The advent of SFAS 142 and IAS 36 regarding handling of asset impairment has spawned research into how these standards influence whether an impairment loss is recorded. Deferred tax items in China have three major components: temporary tax and financial reporting differences in depreciation; impairment losses; and previous losses, which can be carried forward for five years for tax purposes. While the temporary differences in depreciation typically defer taxes and create deferred tax liabilities, impairment losses and previous losses create deferred tax assets because they are not deductible in the current period for tax purposes. A deferred tax asset is …

Automation in the form of drones, machine learning, computer vision, robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, and robotic software applications will continue to increase productivity and reduce the need for some workers. While there may not be an immediate reduction in accounting professionals, data analytics has begun to shift the primary skill sets needed for accountants in the United States and abroad. In this paper, we identify and discuss the main challenges the profession faces in attracting black students to the profession. Additionally, we present a theoretical discussion of the challenge of ensuring that as more accounting work moves from traditional …
