Why Do Many Consumers Prefer To Pay Now When They Could Pay Later?, Arvind Agrawal, James W. Gentry
Why Do Many Consumers Prefer To Pay Now When They Could Pay Later?, Arvind Agrawal, James W. Gentry
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
Payment timing is conceptualized as a payment characteristic useful in explaining motivations to prefer payment types. Cash, debit cards, and online banking represent consumers' preferences to pay now, while credit cards and loans represent the inclination to pay later. Based on a grounded theory study, a payment‐timing model is developed to theorize consumers' choices of payment types with differences in payment timing. The model presents four motivations for payment‐timing preferences: (1) the extent of rewards salience, (2) the perception of financial stress, (3) adopting heuristics for money management, and (4) the influence of perceived financial ability. Consumers choose payment‐timing options …

Socioeconomic Predictors Of Visitor Harassment: Why Knowing Vendor Migration Patterns Is Important, Annmarie Nicely, Aiden Selvia
Socioeconomic Predictors Of Visitor Harassment: Why Knowing Vendor Migration Patterns Is Important, Annmarie Nicely, Aiden Selvia
Visitor Harassment Research Unit Special Papers
Trader harassment (TH) of visitors is a widespread problem around the world, but little is known about the phenomenon’s predictors. Hence, the goal of the present study was to determine whether national socioeconomic measures could predict TH intensity levels at destinations. To achieve this, data from primary and secondary sources were gathered and analyzed using regression analysis. No predictors were found, but significant correlations were discovered. Of note, significant correlations were found between TH frequency and the national socioeconomic measures of poverty, income disparity, school life expectancy in years, and percentage of population with improved sanitation facilities. However, significant correlations …
Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy
Conference papers
Current thinking on entrepreneurship states there is no specific link between the entrepreneur and their enterprise. Design is an individual creative act; therefore, the practitioner is not separate from their idiosyncratic process. The Designer is the product offering. Designers form Design Enterprises, meaning that with this aspect of inseparability, the Design Entrepreneur is a different kind of entrepreneur than currently discussed. The literature on the topic discusses design as a creative output, not as entrepreneurship output. Like any enterprise, Design Enterprises must be profitable. There are many entrepreneurship processes, none of which seem to address the needs of the Design …

Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume
Family Firms And Labor Market Regulation, Morten Bennedsen, Sterling Huang, Hannes F. Wagner, Stefan Zeume
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In a panel across twenty-eight countries over 10 years, we show that family firms on average enjoy performance advantages over nonfamily firms only when labor markets are less regulated. We confirm this result in a matched firm sample using a survey-based instrument as a family control. Furthermore, family firms exhibit lower variation in employment levels in less-regulated labor markets, supporting the notion that labor relations drive family firms’ performance advantages. Our results are consistent with the notion that both family ownership and labor market reforms provide employment protection and thus partly substitute as governance mechanisms.
Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell
Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell
Faculty Publications
In this chapter, we examine entrepreneurs who carry ideas, technologies, values, and assumptions between previously unrelated spheres of economic or cultural activity, and in the process, change the existing order of things. We label such individuals amphibious entrepreneurs and explore their characteristics via four case studies. Their stories suggest a distinct species within the genus of entrepreneur: more pragmatic than heroic, and as likely to invent by not knowing any better as by calculative creation. We discuss their role in creating interstitial spaces, contrast them to other boundary-spanning actors, and identify directions for future research at the intersection of social …
Designing Single-Family Residences: A Study Of The Positive Impact Of Interior Design In Creating New Home Value, Shawn M. Falcone
Designing Single-Family Residences: A Study Of The Positive Impact Of Interior Design In Creating New Home Value, Shawn M. Falcone
Interior Design Program: Theses and Other Student Work
This study seeks to demonstrate that interior designers should be included as primary stakeholders in the home construction market. The market demand for new single-family homes in America is a relative constant. The primary stake and role that land developers, architects, draftsman, home builders, bankers, appraisers, real estate agents, and buyers have in the home construction market is clear. What is less clear is the role in value an interior designer has in the home construction market. This thesis examines the impact designers have on home value when their expertise is utilized in space planning (i.e.: layout, function, room utilization, …
The Impact Of Customer Collaboration On Agile Product Development Success In Technology Startups Within The Pacific Northwest, Chad Ryan Thompson
The Impact Of Customer Collaboration On Agile Product Development Success In Technology Startups Within The Pacific Northwest, Chad Ryan Thompson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
While agile software development is being adopted in more organizations recently, many products using the methodology are still failing in the market due to inadequate customer collaboration despite the purported benefits. Within start-ups, where speed and early market penetration can be the death or success of a company, understanding if using agile software development including adequate customer collaboration makes a significant difference is important. A study which investigates the impact of including customer collaboration in the agile product development process could uncover whether or not a product is successful within technology focused start-up’s in the Pacific Northwest. This research could …

A Hybrid Plithogenic Decision-Making Approach With Quality Function Deployment For Selecting Supply Chain Sustainability Metrics, Florentin Smarandache, Mohamed Abdel-Basset, Rehab Mohamed, Abd El-Nasser H. Zaied
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Supply chain sustainability has become one of the most attractive decision management topics. There are many articles that have focused on this field presenting many different points of view. This research is centred on the evaluation of supply chain sustainability based on two critical dimensions. The first is the importance of evaluation metrics based on economic, environmental and social aspects, and the second is the degree of difficulty of information gathering. This paper aims to increase the accuracy of the evaluation. The proposed method is a combination of quality function deployment (QFD) with plithogenic aggregation operations. The aggregation operation is …
How And When Is Self-Efficacy Related To Entrepreneurial Intentions: Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurial Outcome Expectations And Subjective Norms, Susana C. Santos, Eric Liguori
How And When Is Self-Efficacy Related To Entrepreneurial Intentions: Exploring The Role Of Entrepreneurial Outcome Expectations And Subjective Norms, Susana C. Santos, Eric Liguori
Rohrer College of Business Faculty Scholarship
This study investigates how and when general self-efficacy is related to entrepreneurial intentions. We propose that entrepreneurial outcome expectations function as a mediator in this relationship, while subjective norms act as a moderator. Using a sample of 1052 students from U.S. Public Universities, we tested a moderated mediation model. Results showed that general self-efficacy is positively related to entrepreneurial intentions through the mediating effect of entrepreneurial outcome expectations, and that this relationship is significantly positive for individuals with favourable subjective norms towards entrepreneurship, while significantly negative for individuals with less favourable subjective norms. These findings contribute to literatures on entrepreneurial …

Nebraska Innovation Studio, extension helping communities transform libraries.
Back in 2012, Beatrice Public Library leaders and stakeholders had an eye toward the future as they drew up plans for a building renovation. Among the ideas was an area to house a makerspace.
“Some in the public hadn’t heard of this concept, so we ended up not having the full space,” library director Laureen Riedesel said. “We do have a 3-D printer and computers set up there, and our idea is to let it evolve and as people become aware of what we have, they’d ask for machines that we could …

Partnering With Corporate Entrepreneurs On An Experiential Design Thinking Project, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Isabelle Rogner
Entrepreneurship Faculty Research
This article offers faculty an innovative teaching approach for an experiential class project centered around design thinking. The basic processes of the project are detailed using a running example where the entrepreneurship instructor partners with corporate entrepreneurs from a leading financial technology firm to develop, teach, and team with student groups to design think solutions for three of the community’s greatest challenges: substance abuse, youth education, and technology. Learning objectives are identified and measures of the program’s effectiveness at achieving the learning objectives are collected, assessed, and reported. Analysis of the data suggests the program is effective at enhancing student …

Abstract
Individuals in top management positions often have conflicting interpretations concerning the authoritative qualities that align with the intrinsic and external relations of an organization. Although, researchers may still debate about the extent to which athletic development personality factors are important internal components of an individual. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if athletic development personality factors correlate with decision making at the executive leadership level. The research questions focused on determining if there was a relationship between athletic development personality factors and decision making. Social exchange theory, social representations theory, and leadership theories comprised the theoretical …

Family Togetherness, Navneet Bhatnagar
Family Togetherness, Navneet Bhatnagar
Asian Management Insights
Family-controlled businesses are the dominant form of business organisation across the world, and particularly so in many Asian countries. A major challenge that family businesses face is the lack of togetherness or cohesion among the members of the owner family, especially across generations. This often leads to confusion, differences and confl icts within the family and poses a serious threat to the sustained growth and long-term survival of the business. Lack of family togetherness also puts the founder’s legacy at risk. Breakups and splits in large business families have the potential to create macro-level disturbances, especially given their massive scale …

A Recipe For Success: Asia's F&B Franchising, Kek Sin Koh
Asian Management Insights
Asian food and beverage (F&B) brands are exploding in popularity all over the world. Since 1999, Asian fast food restaurants have grown by 500 percent globally, making it the single fastest-growing food category, outstripping the growth of the next four, i.e. Middle Eastern, Chicken, Pizza, and Latin.1 At the same time, there is a huge opportunity for F&B franchising in Asia Pacific—over the past decade, the sector has flourished with the entry and expansion of both international and Asian brands, and in 2016, the restaurant industry in this region was estimated to be worth some US$1.5 trillion.2 Going forward, there …

Abstract
At the center of any economy lies the contributions of the SMEs. It is documented that the economic growth experienced in the developed countries of the world can be attributed largely to the contributions of the SME sector. Unfortunately in Nigeria, research has shown the performance of SMEs to be low especially in Port-Harcourt. This study examined by analyzing the influence of business information use on performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in Port-Harcourt Nigeria. Data collection was done by the use of a self-structured questionnaire. Four hundred and forty eight (448) copies of questionnaires were distributed to proprietors …
