The Effects Of Hipaa's Privacy Rule On Medical Research, Wesley Wei

The HIPAA Privacy Rule was not initially designed to impact medical or scientific research. However, since its implementation, it has negatively affected the research community through several facets. The main issue resulting from HIPAA's privacy rule is derived from the ambiguous language in the law itself. This paper looks at the benefits of removing medical researchers from the scope of the Privacy Rule and placing it back under the previously used Common Rule with several key revisions.

This paper examines factors affecting the calorie gap by considering the risk of calorie inadequacy or excess at the tails of food intakes. Non-linear estimations accounting for rural/urban differences in more and less developed states allow for policy-making on two levels. First, the calorie gap was found to respond differently depending on the calorie status of the individual, to various socio-economic characteristics, social assistance programmes, as well as caste and religion. Second, these impacts depended on rural/urban differences and at other times on the development of the states. This study tests whether policy narratives designed to increase support for obesity-reducing public policies should explicitly acknowledge individual responsibility while emphasizing social, physical, and economic (social) determinants of obesity. We use a web-based, randomized experiment with a nationally representative sample of American adults (n = 718) to test hypotheses derived from theory and research on narrative persuasion. Respondents exposed to narratives that acknowledged individual responsibility while emphasizing obesity’s social determinants were less likely to engage in counterargument and felt more empathy for the story’s main character than those exposed to a message that did not acknowledge individual responsibility. This paper develops and simulates a dynamic general equilibrium macroeconomic model to analyze the likely impact of oil production and revenue rehabilitation on the Libyan economy, under different government fiscal policy responses. The model is ideally appropriate to analyze macroeconomic issues in oil-producing developing countries. In particular, it is capable of incorporating alternative government policy responses toward the allocation of the oil revenue either upon consumption spending or development spending in the form of government investment spending upon infrastructure, human capital formation and technology acquisition in non-oil production. Given the financial challenges faced by the airline industry, understanding of the combined effect of terrorism and the price of petroleum on airline profitability is imperative. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if a combination of terrorism and the price of petroleum significantly predicted airline profitability, and which variable was the most significant. This study collected samples of financial records from major American commercial passenger and cargo airlines on costs of fuel (n = 84) and airline profitability (n = 84). The purpose of this paper is to examine differences in factors influencing use of entrepreneurial assistance programs by male and female entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach – Data from the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics I are used to determine drivers of assistance program use by men and women using logistic regression. These drivers include size and composition of the start-up team and personal network, experiences of the entrepreneur, team and network; support provided by the team and network, and other factors. El presente trabajo describe las políticas comerciales aplicadas a partir del Consenso de Washington que tuvieron un impacto en la seguridad alimentaria para el caso del arroz en Colombia. Las variables asociadas a la seguridad alimentaria como la producción, el consumo y los precios del arroz fueron estudiadas a través de análisis de tendencias y modelos de regresión lineal.
