An Assessment Of A Just-In-Time Training Intervention In A Manufacturing Organization, Barry James Wilkie Dec 2013

An Assessment Of A Just-In-Time Training Intervention In A Manufacturing Organization, Barry James Wilkie

Dissertations

High Performance Work Practices (HPWP) is part of an area of human resource systems growing in interest among performance improvement experts. This research paper assesses the degree to which job-training-intervention programs, a type of HPWP, contribute to organizational performance in a manufacturing environment. The literature review reveals that while there is a growing body of evidence supporting an association between HPWP and organizational performance, limited research exists on the association. This research provides a literature review of previous studies, which show different ways that HPWP help to achieve the optimization of employees’ skill sets. The relationship between one type of …

Manpower Training And Public Sector Job Creation Under Ceta: The Experience In Maine And New Hampshire, Allen Thompson, Richard W. Hurd Oct 2013

Manpower Training And Public Sector Job Creation Under Ceta: The Experience In Maine And New Hampshire, Allen Thompson, Richard W. Hurd

Richard W Hurd

On December 28, 1973 President Nixon signed Public Law 93-203, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA). The new law represents a significant shift in the roles played by federal, state, and local officials in the expenditure of federal money for manpower services. The key characteristics of CETA are often described as "decentralization" and "decategorization." Prior to the passage of CETA the manpower system was almost exclusively under the control of federal officials. Under CETA, authority has, to some extent, been decentralized as state and local governments have been given block grants of money to be spent on manpower services …

Barriers To Behavior-Based And Outcome-Based Evaluations Of Workplace Training, Perri Kennedy, Seung Youn Chyung Oct 2013

Barriers To Behavior-Based And Outcome-Based Evaluations Of Workplace Training, Perri Kennedy, Seung Youn Chyung

Seung Youn (Yonnie) Chyung

Most workplace learning professionals understand the need to evaluate the training interventions they develop for their organizations. A behavior-based evaluation examines the merit of the training and its relevance to organizational outputs, while a results-based evaluation measures actual outcomes against iexpected benefits. In short, did the training intervention meet its objectives, and did it have the desired impact on workplace performance? In this era of shrinking budgets, it's critical for learning departments to prove their value to their organizations. However, surveys reveal that only about half of workforce training interventions are evaluated on the on-the-job behaviors they generate, and even …

Relating Training To Job Satisfaction: A Survey Of Online Faculty Members, Brian Hoekstra

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

As the online education market continues to mature, institutions of higher education will respond to student demand by employing quality faculty members. A convenience sample of 497 Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) faculty members was invited to participate, and 148 responded. A quantitative study utilizing regression analysis investigated the relationship between the training methodology of online course module completion and job …

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A recent survey by the Chicago Compensation Association (CCA) found only 15 percent of its membership had three years or less experience in the profession and 15 percent had four to six years’ experience. Furthermore, senior members complained that it was difficult to find applicants with the education and experience needed to fill entry-level compensation and benefits jobs. In an effort to strengthen its appeal to early career professionals and to provide a meaningful development experience, CCA launched a mentor program in spring 2012 after more than a year of development.

An Analysis Of Firearms Training Performance Among Active Law Enforcement Officers, John Thomasson May 2013

An Analysis Of Firearms Training Performance Among Active Law Enforcement Officers, John Thomasson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Firearms proficiency is an implicit expectation, held by the public of police officers, due to presumption that the required firearm training is an adequate preparation for a deadly force encounter. However, anecdotal evidence and available data on police shootings suggest that conventional, unrealistic training methods are wholly inadequate. To present stress into firearms training, some departments have opted for exercises such as physical exertion and shoot-house training as a substitute for realistic simulation of force-on-force confrontations.

To determine whether such exercises are comparable, an observation of performance and heart rate levels was conducted on a group of eight police officers, …

Aeronautics, Graduate Studies - Worldwide

This article sheds light on the key player needed for any space tourism adventure: the pilot who flies the spacecraft. The paper addresses the potential benefits of including a pilot at the controls when designing a space tourism spacecraft. It examines the basic qualifications and advanced skills required of space tourism pilots and discusses key training requirements for selected pilots and space pilots’ pay and benefits. In addition, the research concludes that, just as the pioneers of passenger transport in aviation entertained and captured the interest of their passengers, the space pilot should have the skills of a tour guide.

Employability Advantages Of Marketing Education Industry Certification Examinations, Devon Ashley Elmore

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Industry certification of workplace skills is emerging as a key educational movement for career and technical education programs. Many states are now integrating credentialing into their programs with the goal of preparing students with labor market advantages. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the notion that obtaining an industry certification provides students with employability advantages. As a result, the purpose of this study is to collect and analyze empirical data to determine whether obtaining an industry credential can assist a prospective student with job obtainment.

This dissertation examines the use of the National Retail Foundation (NRF) Customer Service …

Cognitive Mentorship: Mediating Protégé Performance, Brian R. Mauntel Mar 2013

Cognitive Mentorship: Mediating Protégé Performance, Brian R. Mauntel

Theses and Dissertations

The role of cognitive apprenticeship has been emphasized in facilitating individual performance in the classroom, but there is limited quantitative research directly linking cognitive behaviors to mentoring relationships and workplace performance. This study investigates the characteristics of mentoring behavior that influence group performance using archival data from 52 different organizations. A mediation model is developed and the results indicate that the group-level of mentors' cognitive behavior plays a central role in the mentor-protege relationship. The findings suggest that the mentors' collective articulation of problem solving processes fully mediate the unit's performance, while reflection and exploration partially mediate the relationship. The …

Invisible No More: The Role Of Training And Education In Increasing Union Activism Of Chinese Home Care Workers In Local 1199seiu United Healthcare Workers East (Uhe), Ken Margolies

Ken Margolies

[Excerpt] In 2002 only a small number of Chinese home care workers represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East (UHE) were involved in their union. Language, unfamiliarity with unions in the United States, and, in some cases, undocumented immigration status inhibited participation in the life of the union by the growing number of Chinese home care workers. Despite these obstacles in 2007 perhaps the most active segment of the 60,000 home care workers in 1199SEIU now comes from the approximately 10,000 Chinese home care workers. Today, Chinese home care workers are consistently overrepresented at union (not just home care) rallies …

How Union Leaders View Job Training Programs, John E. Drotning, David B. Lipsky

David B Lipsky

How do local union leaders view manpower training programs for hard-core-disadvantaged blacks? How do they perceive their members' attitudes towards these training programs? Do unions block the implementation of job training, or do they support it? What are the union leaders' views on special treatment and double work standards for the hard-core-disadvantaged black trainees? How difficult do union leaders think it will be for these trainees to achieve the educational standards set by the firms? We, along with Myron D. Fottler, explored some aspects of these questions in fairly intensive interviews with 51 local and regional union leaders in western …
