Autonomy And Innovativeness: Understanding Their Relationships With The Performance Of Indonesian Smes, Amie Kusumawardhani, Grace Mccarthy, Nelson Perera

Sydney Business School - Papers

AbstractThis paper reports on two Entrepreneurial Orientation dimensions: autonomy and innovativeness since there has been no significant research in this area in Indonesia, particularly related to the context of SMEs. The purpose of this paper is to report on an empirical investigation of the role of autonomy and innovativeness in the firm performance of Indonesian SMEs, using a mixed methods approach. Findings from the quantitative data analysis confirmed that autonomy and innovativeness were adopted by Indonesian SMEs. However, these EO dimensions were found to have no significant relationships with firm performance. The qualitative data analysis clarified these findings, indicating that …

Homophobia To Heterosexism: Constructs In Need Of Re-Visitation, Ian Smith, Lindsay G. Oades, Grace Mccarthy

Sydney Business School - Papers

Although the concept of homophobia has been used extensively in the literature since the early 1960s, researchers have shown growing concern for its relevance in present day research. Additionally, there has been variance in its definition leading to an array of ambiguities resulting in methodological limitations in empirical studies with a disregard for ensuring that definitions used match the focus of study. There have been numerous attempts to locate the construct within a theoretical framework and this has also resulted in weak empirical design. These weaknesses in research on homophobia have resulted in the coining of the construct heterosexism as …

Value Of Information And Pricing New Health Care Interventions, Andrew R. Willan, Simon Eckermann Jan 2012

Value Of Information And Pricing New Health Care Interventions, Andrew R. Willan, Simon Eckermann

Sydney Business School - Papers

Previous application of value-of-information methods to optimal clinical trial design have predominantly taken a societal decision-making perspective, implicitly assuming that healthcare costs are covered through public expenditure and trial research is funded by government or donation-based philanthropic agencies. In this paper, we consider the interaction between interrelated perspectives of a societal decision maker (e.g. the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence [NICE] in the UK) charged with the responsibility for approving new health interventions for reimbursement and the company that holds the patent for a new intervention. We establish optimal decision making from societal and company perspectives, allowing for …

Sustainability At Home: Policy Measures For Energy-Efficient Appliances, Geoff Kelly Jan 2012

Sustainability At Home: Policy Measures For Energy-Efficient Appliances, Geoff Kelly

Sydney Business School - Papers

Residential energy consumption is now an important component of total energy consumption and its related emissions. In addition, this consumption has significant potential for growth in both developed and developing countries, as average incomes increase, and domestic appliance numbers rise. Reduction in this energy use may be achieved both through conservation measures, and through increased efficiency in its use. This paper focuses on energy efficiency in appliances-those many devices through which household energy is consumed. The policy instruments available to promote the uptake of more efficient devices, and issues associated with their use, are reviewed, drawing on developed country experiences to …

How And Why Do Managers Use Coaching Skills?, Grace Mccarthy, Julia Ahrens

Sydney Business School - Papers

While the evidence base for coaching has been increasing rapidly in the past decade, relatively little is known about how managers coach, what approaches they use, the purposes for which they use coaching and the benefits they experience. This paper provides a brief overview of the coaching literature in relation to the managerial context, outlines the method used in the research reported here, summarises the findings of a survey conducted among Australian managers in March 2012 to explore the above questions, draws conclusions and makes recommendations for further research. Whilst a coaching approach might be initially challenging and time-consuming to …

Coaching And Cross Disciplinary Collaboration: More Complexity And Chaos?, Gordon B. Spence Jan 2012

Coaching And Cross Disciplinary Collaboration: More Complexity And Chaos?, Gordon B. Spence

Sydney Business School - Papers

In this article, the author reflects on the cross-disciplinary approach of working. It is stated that coaching psychologists are not well equipped for working as their theories are based on linear empiricism and focus on prediction and control rather than engagement with unpredictable emergent and ongoing processes. It is suggested the complexity should be learned through an array of different perspectives.

An Exploration Of Applying Rules Based System Modelling Into A Quality Management Framework - Extending The Quality Triangle, Lee Styger Jan 2012

An Exploration Of Applying Rules Based System Modelling Into A Quality Management Framework - Extending The Quality Triangle, Lee Styger

Sydney Business School - Papers

The construct of quality management has moved on greatly since the "quality policing" concepts of the 1980's. Continual improvement and customer centric business development philosophies have become the norm within a "total" business environment. Typically, organisations exploit a series of matrices, templates and models to monitor and control their operations. It has however been noted that, often, due to minimal formal user centric instructions being available, even simple quality and business models are misused and fail to deliver their potential to impact on the business. This paper discusses the possibilities of applying knowledge based engineering fundamentals into quality and business …

Parent's Conception And Experience Of Calling In Child Rearing: A Qualitative Analysis, Justin C. Coulson, Lindsay G. Oades, Gerard J. Stoyles

Sydney Business School - Papers

The concept of "calling" has evolved from a religiously oriented description of occupation to an integrated, broad, and multidimensional construct that is associated with optimal vocational outcomes, personal fulfillment and meaning, and contribution to the "greater good." This article investigates the relevance of calling in the parental domain and explores the experience of calling in child rearing. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, 11 qualitative, semistructured interviews were conducted with mothers and fathers. Different parents were interviewed at three distinct developmental time points in their child(ren)'s lives: while their child was an infant (<2 >years), while their children were of primary school …

Virtual Teams And Blended Learning, Grace Mccarthy Jan 2012

Virtual Teams And Blended Learning, Grace Mccarthy

Sydney Business School - Papers

Research on how to develop effective virtual teams addresses many of the same issues as lecturers working with students in a blended or online environment. Virtual teams may meet occasionally face to face but mostly work in different physical locations. Similarly, blended learning students meet periodically for face to face classes but otherwise use technology to connect to the university and their fellow students, rather than sitting together in the same physical environment. It is useful therefore to consider what lessons can be learned from the literature on virtual teams which can be used with blended learning students. This paper …

Culture Of Social Institutions And Behavioural Manifestations In Entrepreneurship Development: A South-Asian Case, Helan R. Gamage, Ananda Wickramasinghe

Sydney Business School - Papers

This paper is based on the South Asian culture, social institutions and entrepreneurship in particular to Sri Lankan entrepreneurship. Sri Lankan culture demonstrates various complex and unique behavioral patterns. Sri Lankan entrepreneurial culture can be identified to have evolved through two different routes. One can be traced to the origins of Sri Lankan civilization and the other to the western influence, originating from the Industrial Revolution, and imposed through colonization which systematically destroyed the indigenous feudal system. Moreover, the ideology of entrepreneurship training and education in Sri Lanka is exclusively western in origin and character. Observations of this research showed …

The Invisible Hand Of Business Strategy Processes: Culture, Power And Politics In Stragegy In A Developing Country, Ananda Wickramasinghe Jan 2012

The Invisible Hand Of Business Strategy Processes: Culture, Power And Politics In Stragegy In A Developing Country, Ananda Wickramasinghe

Sydney Business School - Papers

This paper argues the reasons for limited compatibility of western strategic approaches with production relations in Sri Lankan tea plantation sector from findings of case study research. Reasons for this include the great diversity within the sector in relation to key issues including caste and class, ethnic groups and their political groupings, and in particular to modes of production which span traditional, capitalist and state capitalist models. Managers in developing countries struggle to assimilate such prescriptive perspectives and frameworks into their firms in response to external pressures. This suggests strategy research needs to be informed beyond generalised strategy and national …

A Comparison Of Theory And Practice In Market Intelligence Gathering For Australian Micro-Businesses And Smes, Pauline Ross, Carol Mcgowan, Lee Styger Jan 2012

A Comparison Of Theory And Practice In Market Intelligence Gathering For Australian Micro-Businesses And Smes, Pauline Ross, Carol Mcgowan, Lee Styger

Sydney Business School - Papers

Recent government sponsored research has demonstrated that there is a gap between the theory and practice of market intelligence gathering within the Australian micro, small and medium businesses (SMEs). Typically, there is a significant amount of information in literature about "what needs to be done", however, there is little insight in terms of how market intelligence gathering should occur. This paper provides a novel insight and a comparison between the theory and practices of market intelligence gathering of micro-business and SMEs in Australia and demonstrates an anomoly in so far as typically the literature does not match what actually occurs …

Different Usage Profiles For Listeners Of Music Delivered Via Interactive Television, Free-To-Air Radio, And Personal Music Collections, Charles S. Areni, Rohan Miller Jan 2012

Different Usage Profiles For Listeners Of Music Delivered Via Interactive Television, Free-To-Air Radio, And Personal Music Collections, Charles S. Areni, Rohan Miller

Sydney Business School - Papers

This study examines the audience profile and usage patterns of interactive cable/satellite audio (ICSA) listeners and compares them with listeners of free-to-air radio (FTA) and personal music collections(PMC). A survey of ICSA users in Australia reveals that heavy users of ICSA are also likely to be heavy users of FTA and PMC. However, ICSA listeners are significantly older than FTA or PMC listeners and prefer music formats different to those reflected in radio audiences and CD sales.

Suppliers Ranking In The Presence Of Undesirable Outputs, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen Jan 2012

Suppliers Ranking In The Presence Of Undesirable Outputs, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen

Sydney Business School - Papers

In conventional usage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for supplier selection, it is assumed that producing more outputs relative to fewer inputs is a criterion of efficiency. However, in the presence of undesirable outputs, suppliers with more good (desirable) outputs and less bad (undesirable) outputs relative to fewer inputs should be recognised as efficient. In addition, to get a complete ranking among suppliers and also eliminate unrealistic weighting schemes among them, this paper proposes a cross-efficiency formulation of DEA, which can treat undesirable outputs. A numerical example demonstrates the application of the proposed model in supplier ranking context. 2012 Inderscience …

Suppliers Ranking By Cross-Efficiency Evaluation In The Presence Of Volume Discount Offers, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Reza Farzipoor Saen Jan 2012

Suppliers Ranking By Cross-Efficiency Evaluation In The Presence Of Volume Discount Offers, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Reza Farzipoor Saen

Sydney Business School - Papers

The performance of each supply chain is significantly related to the performance of the suppliers. Due to the multiple criteria nature of the supplier selection problem, data envelopment analysis (DEA), as a multiple criteria decision-making tool, seems to be an appropriate method. This paper specifically focuses on the supplier selection problem when the suppliers offer volume discounts to encourage the purchase of large volumes. However, in all the papers which deal with the volume discount concept in DEA models, each decision-making unit (DMU) is free to decide which outputs and inputs to emphasise that in turn cause to have many …

A New Approach For Considering A Dual-Role Factor In Data Envelopment Analysis, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen Jan 2012

A New Approach For Considering A Dual-Role Factor In Data Envelopment Analysis, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen

Sydney Business School - Papers

The conventional data envelopment analysis models deal with dualrole factor as non-discretionary (uncontrollable) factor. However, there might be dual-role factor which is under control of decision-maker. In addition, despite the fact that there are several publications addressing dual-role factors, it seems that their idea of classifying a factor as an input or an output within a single model has a limitation. They also do not consider non-zero input and output slacks and cannot fully measure the inefficiency of decision-making units. To resolve these limitations and to consider dual-role factor as well, this paper proposes a slacks-based measure model which does …

A Novel Data Envelopment Analysis Model For Solving Supplier Selection Problems With Undesirable Outputs And Lack Of Inputs, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen, Madjid Tavana Jan 2012

A Novel Data Envelopment Analysis Model For Solving Supplier Selection Problems With Undesirable Outputs And Lack Of Inputs, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen, Madjid Tavana

Sydney Business School - Papers

Supplier evaluation and selection problems are inherently multi-criteria decision problems. Numerous analytical techniques ranging from simple weighted scoring to complex mathematical programming approaches have been proposed to solve these problems. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to evaluate suppliers' performance when there are multiple inputs and outputs in the supplier selection problem. The DEA determines the relative efficiencies of multiple suppliers. These relative efficiencies are then used to provide benchmarking data for reducing the number of suppliers. The DEA models used for supplier selection require numerical data for all the inputs and outputs for all the suppliers. However, this …

A Comparison Of Supply Integration And End-To-End Communication Theory And Practice - An Australian Perspective, Fadi Kotob, Lee E J Styger Jan 2012

A Comparison Of Supply Integration And End-To-End Communication Theory And Practice - An Australian Perspective, Fadi Kotob, Lee E J Styger

Sydney Business School - Papers

The concept of supply chain integration and end-to-end communication are well established in supply chain theory. Typically, because of the depth of publications, an axiom has developed that all supply networks are fully integrated and have end-toend communication protocols. Recent research into Australian supply networks has highlighted a somewhat different scenario, where many networks are fragmented and lack the connectivity that would be expected. This paper offers a comparison of theoretical supply chain management and the actual practices found in Australian businesses. As a result of this grass root research, a scenario is offered that suggest there is a significant …

A Data Envelopment Analysis Model For Selecting Suppliers In The Presence Of Both Dual-Role Factors And Non-Discretionary Inputs, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen Jan 2012

A Data Envelopment Analysis Model For Selecting Suppliers In The Presence Of Both Dual-Role Factors And Non-Discretionary Inputs, Abdollah Noorizadeh, Mahdi Mahdiloo, Reza Farzipoor Saen

Sydney Business School - Papers

Supplier selection is the strategy adopted by the manufacturer, to evaluate and select suppliers, which can fulfil the requirements of the manufacturer. To this end, data envelopment analysis (DEA), as a multiple criteria decision-making tool, has been applied for several times. However, conventional DEA models cannot simultaneously consider dual-role and non-discretionary factors. The objective of this paper is to propose a DEA model for ranking suppliers in the presence of both dual-role factors and non-discretionary inputs. A numerical example demonstrates the application of the proposed model. 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
