Mortgage Securitization 426 Working Paper: Is It An Insurance Product?, Symphony Music

This discussion highlights informed interaction between two knowledgeable parties about whether the residential mortgage asset backed securitization process involves the creation of an insurance product. Although an initial conclusion reached by an Insurance Examiner that it is not “insurance,” that same Examiner opened the door that it could be viewed as “insurance.” If it is determined that insurance is involved, the obligation to collect taxes falls onto the Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services, the requirement to collect balance sheets falls onto the Insurance Department, and the decision to prosecute originators for perpetuating a fraud on bank loan consumers falls …

This paper examines how funding patterns, career pathways and collaboration networks influence scientific recognition. We analyze these institutional factors in the early and middle phases of academic careers through comparison of a group of researchers recognized as creative by their peers with a matched group of researchers. Measurement of scientific recognition is based on survey nominations and research prizes in two growing, laboratory-intensive research domains: nanotechnology and human genetics. Curriculum vitae data is used to compare researchers based in the United States and Europe. In the early career model for the United States, we find that scientific recognition is associated …

Ownership Structure, Firm Value And Investment Opportunities Set: Evidence From Mexican Firms, Juan M. San Martín-Reyna, Jorge A. Durán-Encalada

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI

This paper analyses the influence of ownership, board of directors, and financial leverage on companies’ performance when these either face, or do not face, profitable growth opportunities. Towards that end we examined a sample of 83 listed Mexican firms during the period 2005-2011. The results confirm the relevance of debt and board of directors in terms of firm market value by showing a negative relationship between performance and both, board of directors and leverage, in the presence of growth opportunities. In contrast, the relationship between debt and performance becomes positive when firms have no profitable investment projects. The results also …

This study aims to discuss one of the most significant economic and social developments in the world – the rise of the female entrepreneurship phenomenon. Women entrepreneurship needs to be studied as a separate field for two main reasons: (a). Female entrepreneurship is an important source of economic growth in creating new jobs and by being genetically different: women provide different solutions to management and business issues; (b). Female entrepreneurship has been neglected, particularly in business research. Although equal opportunity for men and women in the entrepreneurial field is not a reality in the short range, the progress towards its …

An Phuoc (A): Can Its Business Be Rescued From The Asian Financial Crisis?, Mai T T Thai, Huong T. Thai

Mai T T Thai

Nguyen Thi Dien, the founder and owner of An Phuoc, was staring at several letters from An Phuoc’s major customers on a summer day in 1997. Although the weather was suffocatingly hot and humid, she had a chill running down her spine. One after another, the letters informed her that An Phuoc’s major orders had been cancelled and that its partners were closing their business because of the Asian financial crisis. It was clear that An Phuoc would have to close down its factories and make massive layoffs unless it could find a new market. What would it be?

An Phuoc (B): Can Its Business Model Survive The Global Financial Crisis?, Mai T T Thai, Huong T. Thai

Nguyen Thi Dien, the founder and owner of An Phuoc, was deep in thought as she watched the news about the global financial crisis on a winter day in early 2008. The crisis had become real now and it was going to have a great impact on global consumption. EU and U.S. markets seemed to be freezing up. The Asian financial crisis had almost killed An Phuoc about 10 years earlier, but her drastic change in business strategies and …
