Students in the Huntsman School of Business were given first-hand insight into leadership techniques employed by one of the most outstanding business leaders in the world. On November 16, Jim Quigley was the guest speaker at the Dean’s Convocation. Mark Erickson, '95, and his wife Jennifer were recognized as Distinguished Young Alumni at this year’s recent USU Homecoming festivities. Mark received his Master’s of Accountancy in 1995 from USU and began a career in public accounting with Tanner in Salt Lake City. He spent four years with Tanner before accepting a position with the SEC in Washington, D.C. After two years at the SEC, Mark rejoined Tanner. In 2001, at the age of 32, Mark became the youngest person to be promoted to corporate officer and member of the board of directors at Tanner. He has been serving as …

Effective July 1, 2011, Governor Gary Herbert appointed J. Scott Nixon ('83 BA, '84 MACC) to a four-year term as a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees. Scott, the Salt Lake City Office Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, has served on the Advisory Board of the School of Accountancy for the past 20 years except for the four years he was on assignment with PwC in Brazil.

Dr. Rosemary Fullerton has been recognized by the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants as the 2011 Outstanding Educator of the Year. She will be recognized for this achievement on Friday, August 19 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. As a talented faculty member in the School of Accountancy, Dr. Fullerton teaches intermediate financial accounting as well as cost management systems at the graduate level.

Freddy Ishola is a recent recipient of the AICPA Minority Scholarship. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and commitment to pursuing the CPA designation. Funding is provided by the AICPA Foundation, with contributions from the New Jersey Society of CPAs and Robert Half International. For four decades, this program has provided over $14.6 million in scholarships to approximately 8,000 accounting scholars.

USU’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter was chosen as one of ten chapters in the nation to receive an initial award of $500 for a winning proposal for the Ernst and Young Diversity Award. The money will help fund the implementation of their proposal, which is to work with the SOA Quigley Ambassadors to communicate to high school students and undeclared majors the many career-friendly opportunities available to females in the accounting profession. JoLynn Runolfson, SOA Lecturer at the Uintah Basin site, has been selected as a contributing author in a soon-to-be published book in the “Fraud Casebook” series authored by Dr. Joseph T. Wells, founder and Chairman of the Board of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The book will be focused on financial statement fraud and is expected to be published in late June. JoLynn’s fraud case was chosen as one of only 47 cases out of 100 that were submitted for consideration.
