Business Review
Power is a key infrastructure, which is the backbone and prime mover of the economic development of any country because power is required for all the sectors of economy which include agriculture, industries, service, information and technology, transport and others. The term energy has been employed to designate not only chemical energy, but also kinetic energy, mechanical energy, electrical energy, radiant energy and thermal energy. These six energy sources play a vital role in the economic development of a nation, because energy facilitate to grow food; keep people alive; transport people and goods; fuel economic development and sustain the economic …

Portland Me: Affordable Housing V. Open Space, Patrick Wright, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer
Planning
Amid an acknowledged “affordable housing crisis”, a first-time developer approaches the City to release part of a tax-acquired property, promising a smart-growth development that would provide sorely needed starter homes for working families. The case highlights the complications of balancing competing interests in Portland ME. It shows where rational planning fails in the presence of strong neighborhood opposition, a disjointed city staff structure, and the absence of political will among City Councilors. It highlights the need for champions within local government when a project evokes competing interests. It demonstrates the extent to which “words matter” to policy outcomes, and who …

Brunswick Me: De-Militarizing The Bnas, Anne Holland, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer
Planning
Closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station in 2011 will have profound economic impacts on the entire mid-coast Maine region of Maine, with an estimated loss of 6,500 jobs and $330 million annual income. Throughout the Base Realignment and Closure process, Brunswick, the region, and the State of Maine followed federal rules and developed the federally-funded Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) to plan for reuse of the 3300 acre base. In its planning process, the BLRA adhered to a number of well thought-out Guiding Principles, including the use of extensive public participation and the consideration of “smart growth” principles and …

The Role Of Knowledge Management In An Organisation's Sustainable Development, Rosemary Van Der Meer, Sukunesan Sinnappan
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
This paper intends to study the role that Knowledge Management has in development of sustainable organisations. Particularly, the researchers propose to examine key factors in the use of Knowledge Management and sustainable development that could be used to provide a measure in achieving sustainability. The research project is an exploratory study using a case study approach due to the limited amount of literature available on the use of Knowledge Management in sustainable development. The significance of this study is the opportunity to see how much impact Knowledge Management can make in the process of re-engineering an organisation along sustainable goals. …

Categorisation Of Knowledge Management Processes In The Development Of Sustainable Enterprises, Rosemary Van Der Meer, Sukunesan Sinnappan
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
Sustainable development is a growing area of interest in organisations. Particularly those that have large energy demands for processing, use dwindling raw materials or produce a great deal of waste through production. Knowing those processes that can contribute to making an organisation more sustainable provides a great advantage both in terms of project implementation success and in measurable Triple Bottom Line returns. In previous research we identified that many of the Information Technology processes used to assist organisations in developing sustainable practices were more clearly suited as Knowledge Management processes (Van Der Meer and Sinnappan, 2008), however less empirical study …
The Development Of Private Businesses In China, Guibin Zhang, Zhong Qin
The Development Of Private Businesses In China, Guibin Zhang, Zhong Qin
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
China’s economic development since 1978 has been fuelled largely by a new private sector that has depended on entrepreneurship. In 1978 the private sector virtually did not exist. In 2005 it was estimated that about one-quarter of gross domestic product (GDP) was produced by the domestic private sector. However, the academic discourse on China’s private sector is lagging behind the sector’s actual development. Before the market reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China relied on state entrepreneurship. When the model of state entrepreneurship began to run out of energy, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) turned to private entrepreneurship as …

The Development Of The Revised Urinary Incontinence Scale (Ruis), Janet E. Sansoni, Nicholas Marosszeky, Emily Sansoni, Graeme Hawthorne
Sydney Business School - Papers
This paper reports on innovative work aimed at adapting a urinary continence measure for Australian conditions. Following recommendations made by the Continence Outcomes Measurement Suite (COMS) Project (Thomas, et al. 2006), two brief urinary incontinence measures, the Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) and the Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6) were included in a community population survey (N = 3015) to obtain current prevalence estimates for urinary incontinence in Australia.
This large dataset also allowed for the psychometric examination of these instruments and their item properties, e.g. examining item endorsement and discrimination, item-total correlations and Cronbach’s Alpha, as well as the use of …
Similarities And Differences Of Custom Designed Erp Systems Development And Implementation In Two Cases In Services And Manufacturing, Farshad Salimi
Similarities And Differences Of Custom Designed Erp Systems Development And Implementation In Two Cases In Services And Manufacturing, Farshad Salimi
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
In this paper we made a comparative review of two case studies in development, design, and implementation of in-house custom-designed Enterprise Resource Planning packages in manufacturing and services. For comparison, we scanned through business solutions, tangible and intangible benefits, process of implementation, implementation problems and planning, benefits of ERP implementation, business processes, business strategies, project goals, IT infrastructure, and key critical success factors (KCSFs). The KCSFs and the important key factors were the focus point in evaluation of differences. For instance, in manufacturing, the innovation strategy was identified as an important KCSF in implementation planning phase whereas in service, understanding …
