Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Dec 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries, we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …

In At The Deep End: Conducting Processual Research On Organisational Change, Patrick M. Dawson

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This article provides a series of reflections on the practice of carrying out processual research on organisational change. At a broad level, some of the main tasks associated with conducting company case studies are described and the benefits of this approach for dealing with complex change data are outlined. At a more specific level, the article addresses three main areas tied to the actual ‘doing’ of processual research. First, the notion of tacit knowledge and ‘getting your hands dirty’ by engaging in ongoing in-depth fieldwork. Second, the design and implementation of a longitudinal case study research programme. Third, the advantages …

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee Dec 1997

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This article investigates whether the stock markets of the Pacific Basin countries of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan are informationally efficient with respect to macroeconomic policies. Granger causality tests are utilized in the context of a Vector Error Correction Model to test the relationship between aggregate stock prices and monetary and fiscal policies. The findings indicate that the stock markets of all four countries are not efficient with respect to both macroeconomic policies. These findings are different from those of other articles focusing on major industrialized countries. Rejection of market efficiency may be attributed to the unique structure …

The Role Of Skill Upgrading In Manufacturing Performance, Melissa M. Appleyard Dec 1997

The Role Of Skill Upgrading In Manufacturing Performance, Melissa M. Appleyard

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

This section examines the industry-wide trend of upgrading the skills of production workers in the semiconductor industry. This analysis discusses the industry characteristics driving this trend, the human resource policies that support skill upgrades, and the payoffs associated with such upgrades. To provide a deeper understanding of the process of skill upgrading, two fabs from our sample are analyzed in detail. One fab is located in Japan (pseudonym Jfab) and the other fab is located in the U.S. (pseudonym USfab).

As a central part of their manufacturing strategy, these fabs have emphasized the upskilling of operators particularly for equipment maintenance …

The Revolution In Retailing: From Market Driven To Market Driving, Nirmalya Kumar Dec 1997

The Revolution In Retailing: From Market Driven To Market Driving, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The first image aroused by 'retailing' for many of us, especially those of us who are somewhat older, is that of the corner grocery store. Not so long agb retailing was, and it still is in some parts of the world, a fragmented, local, unsophisticated, traditional business run by vulnerable owner-operators. Yet, here we are talking about a revolution in retailing. Why? What has changed? Fundamentally retailers have grown up over the past 25 years into large, global, technology-intensive, powerful, fast-growth corporations managing their own brands. Several retailers have become the darlings of their stock markets. Hennes and Mauritz, the …

A Framework For Reaching Agreement On Climate Change: Morals, Self-Interest, And Strategy, F. Ted Tschang, N. S. Murthy, K. S. Kavi Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines why negotiations following the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) have stalled and makes suggestions on how to circumvent the obstacles. In particular, the paper: - illustrates how current barriers to international agreement on climate change (CC) decompose into the separate components-self-interest, morality and strategy and discuss how the recent country positions are mixing them. - discusses some elements of a conceptual framework that will serve as a benchmark for assessing the feasibility of a proposal for a CC agreement. - discusses a few modest proposals that could potentially end the current stalemate, and also the potential …

Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins Dec 1997

Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

A study was conducted to examine auditors' responses to first-time debt covenant violations and to assess whether these responses can be employed to forecast financial distress. Data were drawn from a sample of 159 companies traded on the NYSE/AMEX or NASDAQ that had initial default dates ranging from 1978 to 1988. The findings reveal that auditors are more likely to need debt reclassification when the violations are not waived by lenders. However, the waiver decision does not seem to significantly affect the auditor's qualification decision. For companies experiencing technical default, the audit option is an important determinant of future financial …

The Process Of Internationalization In The Operating Firm, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh, Geoff Mallory Dec 1997

The Process Of Internationalization In The Operating Firm, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh, Geoff Mallory

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Two factors have been emphasised as influencing the choice of, and subsequent shifts between, modes of foreign market servicing: (1) market-specific knowledge; and (2) the generalised knowledge from operating internationally. The process-oriented literature on internalisation has tended to emphasise the former over the latter. This article maintains that market-specific knowledge is not the only source of information available to a firm. As firms operate in foreign markets they develop, in addition to networks of institutional arrangements, a knowledge of the process of internationalization. Account therefore has to be taken of the general knowledge from operating internationally in understanding the development …

Accounting For Biases In Black-Scholes, David Backus, Silverio Foresi, Kai Li, Liuren Wu Nov 1997

Accounting For Biases In Black-Scholes, David Backus, Silverio Foresi, Kai Li, Liuren Wu

CRIF Working Paper series

Prices of currency options commonly deffer from the Black-Scholes formula along two dimensions: implied volatilities vary by strike price (volatility smiles) and maturity (implied volatility of at-the-money options increases, on average, with maturity). We account for both using Gram-Charlier expansions to approximate the conditional distribution of the logarithm of the price of the underlying security. In this setting, volatility is approximately a quadratic function of moneyness, a result we use to infer skewness and kurtosis from volatility smiles. Evidence suggests that both kurtosis in currency prices and biases in Black-Scholes option prices decline with maturity.
