The Motives Of Hong Kong-Japanese International Joint Ventures, Mei Ling, May Wong
The Motives Of Hong Kong-Japanese International Joint Ventures, Mei Ling, May Wong
Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series
This paper attempts to study Hong Kong-Japanese joint ventures from the perspectives of firm-specific advantages provided by both partners. The analysis focuses on the local partner's perspective of establishing international joint ventures (IJVs) with a Japanese multinational retailer. First, the background of the local partner, especially the company’s organizational restructuring immediately before the formation of the IJVs is examined. Second, the development and consolidation of the IJVs between the two partners by a series of IJV activities in Hong Kong, Asia, and China is described. Third, the motives behind both partners to establish the IJVs are examined. Finally, an evaluation …

A Preliminary Study Of Using The Sei's Capability Maturity Model To Set Statistical Control Bounds On Dod Contractor Cost And Schedule Performance, Jeffrey A. Schaefer
A Preliminary Study Of Using The Sei's Capability Maturity Model To Set Statistical Control Bounds On Dod Contractor Cost And Schedule Performance, Jeffrey A. Schaefer
Theses and Dissertations
Current methods for monitoring the performance of Department of Defense (DOD) software development contractors have not been successful in reversing the current trend of over budget and behind schedule software development. The DOD has adopted the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI's) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) as a method of determining the process maturity of a software developer with the idea that a more mature process will lead to improved cost and schedule performance. The goal of this research was to determine if a model based on the CMM rating level of a contractor could be developed and used in conjunction with …
Whose Information Is It Anyway? An Argument For Information Stewardship, Trevor W. Plant
Whose Information Is It Anyway? An Argument For Information Stewardship, Trevor W. Plant
Theses and Dissertations
Information is an important resource for businesses and government, with information quality influencing decision quality, and highlighting our need to manage our information well: as a resource. Information Resource Management (IRM) has as its goal the management of information as a resource, but has not been implemented with the level of success expected. Problems with the implementation of IRM are indicated by the presence of redundant or inconsistent data, inability to share information across systems, and difficulty finding the information on systems. We propose that these difficulties are related to behaviours linked to perceived ownership of corporate information by organisational …
Profitability And Technical Efficiency : A Performance Evaluation Of International Joint Ventures In Shanghai's Manufacturing Industries, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung
Profitability And Technical Efficiency : A Performance Evaluation Of International Joint Ventures In Shanghai's Manufacturing Industries, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung
Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series
This paper studies the relationship between accounting profits and efficiency of manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai during the period of 1989-1992 and examines which factors affect the profitability of manufacturing enterprises. In 1990, the industrial reform was sped up, a Chow test is used to test for the presence of any structural break and our empirical test confirms its presence. In addition, this paper also tests for the presence of ownership effects on profits. Our results indicate that the profits of international joint ventures are more persistent than the rest of ownership types and industries.
Endogenous Sequencing In Strategic Trade Policy Games Under Uncertainty, Kit Pong Wong, Kong Wing, Clement Chow
Endogenous Sequencing In Strategic Trade Policy Games Under Uncertainty, Kit Pong Wong, Kong Wing, Clement Chow
Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series
This paper examines a trade policy game with endogenous timing. A tradeoff between commitment and flexibility is identified. The timing of trade policy decisions is shown to depend on the degree of demand uncertainty. When demand uncertainty is low, countervailing duties will never be used because the home government sets its tariff first followed by the export subsidy of the foreign government. When demand uncertainty is very high, the foreign government sets its subsidy first followed by the tariff set by the home government. The foreign government actually imposes an export tax anticipating the tariff retaliation of home government to …

Heuristic Solutions For Loading In Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Bharatendu Srivastava, Wun-Hwa Chen
Heuristic Solutions For Loading In Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Bharatendu Srivastava, Wun-Hwa Chen
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Production planning in flexible manufacturing system deals with the efficient organization of the production resources in order to meet a given production schedule. It is a complex problem and typically leads to several hierarchical subproblems that need to be solved sequentially or simultaneously. Loading is one of the planning subproblems that has to addressed. It involves assigning the necessary operations and tools among the various machines in some optimal fashion to achieve the production of all selected part types. In this paper, we first formulate the loading problem as a 0-1 mixed integer program and then propose heuristic procedures based …

After The Third Sector: Emerging And Disappearing Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
After The Third Sector: Emerging And Disappearing Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The third sector is currently the most popular label for capturing the activities of a highly diverse set of tax-exempt corporations and nonprofit organizations. For some, the third sector is also the nonprofit organization sector, although for many of us it is also the sector of voluntary associations, clubs, self-help groups, and volunteering, although these components of voluntary action have been over-shadowed by interest in nonprofit management. The general thesis of this paper is that although the voluntary action is a more or less permanent feature of human community, the particular forms of the contemporary nonprofit organization and the third …

Nick Anderson Accused: Don't Rush To Judgement, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Last Wednesday Nick Anderson of the Magic called a press conference to deny that he had raped a woman last February. It was an emotional scene at which a tearful Anderson told the press that a complaint had been filed with Orlando police in early October, and that he had been threatened with public exposure by the Pan African InterNational Movement (PAIN) unless he paid them $600,000.

A Community Divided: Coping With A Locally Unwanted Land Use, Robert H. Hamblen
A Community Divided: Coping With A Locally Unwanted Land Use, Robert H. Hamblen
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Locally Unwanted Land Uses constitute a phenomenon peculiar to twentieth century industrialized countries. LULUs, as they have become known, are a facility or development that is perceived by citizens, communities, regions, or states as undesireable, so much so that effort and resources sufficient to end the threat of the facility being built in a location that will significantly impact those citizens, communities, regions, or states will be expended. This scenario has been replayed time and again in the country and others, in response to uses such as halfway houses, generating plants, and landfills.
Holyfield And Tyson - When Magic Play At Arena, City Loses Money, Richard C. Crepeau
Holyfield And Tyson - When Magic Play At Arena, City Loses Money, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
A week after the Boston College story broke the gamblers took a bath, not on college football but on the godfather of sports gambling, boxing. Evander Holyfield's upset of the century over Mike Tyson was a disaster for those who set the odds and cover the bets. With odds running 25-1 to open and dropping to 5-1 just before the fight, bookmakers lost several million dollars. Major money was placed on Holyfield in the last few days, at least some of it coming from the Holyfield camp itself, and the smart money on the favorite never surfaced as betting closed.
