Communication Flows In Distribution Channels: Impact On Assessments Of Communication Quality And Satisfaction, Jakki J. Mohr, Ravipreet S. Sohi Nov 1995

Communication Flows In Distribution Channels: Impact On Assessments Of Communication Quality And Satisfaction, Jakki J. Mohr, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

We develop and test a model of the relationships between: (1) norms of information sharing and communication flows of frequency, bidirectionality, and formality, (2) these communication flows and dealers’ assessments of the quality of communication and satisfaction with communication; and (3) formality of communication flows and dealers’ distortion and withholding of information. Based on data collected with a survey mailed to a national sample of computer dealers, our findings offer insight on channels communication to both researchers and practitioners. By examining the impact of communication flows on summary judgments of communication, managers can focus their efforts on vital communication flows …

Market Power And Performance: A Cross-Industry Analysis Of Manufacturers And Retailers, Kusum L. Ailawadi, Norm Borin, Paul W. Farris Oct 1995

Market Power And Performance: A Cross-Industry Analysis Of Manufacturers And Retailers, Kusum L. Ailawadi, Norm Borin, Paul W. Farris

Marketing

Two recent studies of manufacturer and retailer profitability in the food industry have raised questions about whether the widely cited, but empirically untested, shift of power from manufacturers to retailers has really occurred. Has the marketing community been operating under a misconception or are these studies flawed? This paper uses more complete measures of exercised and potential market power and a broader sample of industries and retail classes to address this critical question. Not only do our measures have strong theoretical grounding in the industrial organization, finance and accounting literature, they incorporate in them the impact of actions that have …

Sp351-C-A New Look At Marketing, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service

Marketing, Finances and Value-Added Agriculture

One of the biggest concerns for today’s growing legion of entrepreneurs is how to successfully market a product or service to a highly discriminating public. This is especially true if your business is located in a rural setting. Rural business people have long faced marketing problems such as a small local customer base and limited advertising outlets due to their rural location. Furthermore, costs for transportation, power and labor are usually higher in rural areas than in the more urban parts of the country.

Advertising Research Issues From Ftc Versus Stouffer Foods Corporation, J. Craig Andrews, Thomas J. Maronick Oct 1995

Advertising Research Issues From Ftc Versus Stouffer Foods Corporation, J. Craig Andrews, Thomas J. Maronick

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Extrinsic evidence is frequently offered in Federal Trade Commission advertising deception cases, most often in the form of advertising research, such as copy tests. Although generally accepted principles exist for copy test evidence presented before the Commission, how these principles are operationalized can provide fertile ground for challenges. Thus, the authors review six copy testing and ad interpretation issues from the recent Stouffer Foods case. The authors discuss difficult tradeoffs inherent in relative versus absolute claims, multiple claims, control ad groups, control questions, and disclosure information. The careful consideration of such trade-offs in advertising research decisions will help in the …

The Effects Of Perceived Interdependence On Dealer Attitudes, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp Aug 1995

The Effects Of Perceived Interdependence On Dealer Attitudes, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Channels research has consistently argued that asymmetric channel relationships are more dysfunctional than those characterized by symmetric interdependence, The authors propose that the degree of both interdependence asymmetry and total interdependence affect the level of interfirm conflict, trust, and commitment. Using survey data from automobile dealers, they demonstrate that, with increasing interdependence asymmetry, the dealer's trust in and commitment to the supplier decline while interfirm conflict increases, In addition, they demonstrate that relationships with greater total interdependence exhibit higher trust, stronger commitment, and lower conflict than relationships with lower interdependence. The effects on conflict are consistent with those predicted by …

A Sensitivity Analysis Of Retailer Shelf Management Models, Norm A. Borin, Paul Farris Jul 1995

A Sensitivity Analysis Of Retailer Shelf Management Models, Norm A. Borin, Paul Farris

Marketing

A shelf management model was developed to assist retailers with the decision of which products to stock and how much space to allocate to those products. Due to the non-linearities in the formulation a closed form solution is not possible. Borin, et al. develop a search heuristic based on simulated annealing and compare the solution against a known optimum. A barrier to the use of such models is the fact that managers typically do not have access to error-free estimates of the parameters required for the model construction (shelf elasticities, search loyalty, and consumer preferences). In this article we analyze …

Values In Transition: The Case Of Modern Mexico, Howard Stanley Hart Iii Jul 1995

Values In Transition: The Case Of Modern Mexico, Howard Stanley Hart Iii

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the changes in the cultural values of individuals from one traditional society who have been exposed to socialization agents generated by a more modern, developed society. The country chosen for this study was Mexico. Mexico has recently experienced an increase in U.S. business, education, and media-based activities, partially as a result of NAFTA. It seems reasonable to expect that Mexicans may be shifting their individual values and perhaps modifying their consumption-related behavior as a consequence of this increase in cultural contact. Given that Mexico has individuals representing the very rich, the middle-class, …

An Economic Study Of The Relative Profitability Of Alfalfa Production And Marketing Practices, David Claycomb May 1995

An Economic Study Of The Relative Profitability Of Alfalfa Production And Marketing Practices, David Claycomb

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The seasonality of the price of alfalfa hay in Kentucky was studied as well as the potential cost or profitability of storage of this hay. Economic comparison of alfalfa hay production to other farm enterprises was carried out. In addition, an estimate of the value of two qualities of alfalfa hay was calculated based on 1991 prices. The analysis of 41 years of marketing data demonstrated significant differences (P<.01) in price with seasonal lows in June/July and a steady increase in price to a high in March. In general (based on $100 per ton hay and 12% interest) the alfalfa hay producer could lose from $5 to $10 storing hay and selling at a later date. There were some specific conditions where he might have realized a return to storage of $0.16 to $1.48 per ton. A further evaluation of average (KY Feeder) and good (KY Pride) quality hays indicated that current prices of $70-$75 and $100 per ton respectively were the prices where a dairyman would be able to include this hay in the cow's total diet. Even with problems of quality and quantity of alfalfa hay, the economic returns to the production of alfalfa hay were favorable when compared to other crops in Kentucky with the additional benefit of alfalfa being a crop that can result in reduced soil erosion from sloping land. Returns above variable costs can be from $120 to $400 per acre depending upon yield and sale price. However, an understanding of seasonality of price as well as storage costs need to be considered by alfalfa hay producers to assure realizing the above returns.

The Relationship Between Machiavellianism, Self-Monitoring, And Adaptiveness To The Performance Of Real Estate Sales Professionals, Dianne Broman Eppler Apr 1995

The Relationship Between Machiavellianism, Self-Monitoring, And Adaptiveness To The Performance Of Real Estate Sales Professionals, Dianne Broman Eppler

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The focus of sales management is on insuring the success of the corporation by selling its goods or services. The most significant impact on the firm's success is the ability of the sales force to perform. Research to determine what makes a successful salesperson is extensive; however, the results are inconsistent and disappointing. In light of the significant financial impact the sales force has on the firm, additional research that identifies determinants of sales success is necessary.

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the relationships between personal characteristics and sales performance. Specifically, Machiavellianism, self-monitoring, and adaptiveness were hypothesized …

Understanding Collaborative Writing Of Technical Proposals With A Process/Product Model, Frank Joseph Greco Apr 1995

Understanding Collaborative Writing Of Technical Proposals With A Process/Product Model, Frank Joseph Greco

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Group work creates concerns with respect to performance, collaboration, and conflict management. Writing technical proposals creates appropriate settings for gaining insight into work group efficiencies and project conflict. The research involved different work groups preparing responses to Federal Government solicitations. A proposed Process/Product model was applied to create a new framework and perception of the technical proposal development effort. There exists a rich dialectic between the forces of Process, (how the effort is accomplished), and, Product, (what the effort will produce.) The investigation attempted to learn if the P/P model provides explanations for project conflict during technical collaborative writing.

A Measure Of Justice For Western Australian Wools, John Stanton Mar 1995

A Measure Of Justice For Western Australian Wools, John Stanton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Western Australian wools are sometimes perceived as inferior to those from eastern States, and this perception has often been reflected in price. For the first time a detailed comparison of the characteristics of our wool with the rest of the country has been undertaken. It shows that Western Australian wools are sometimes different from their eastern counterparts, but not necessarily 'inferior'. Overcoming these industry perceptions of inferiority is probably our biggest challenge, according to JOHN STANTON.

Farm And Station Stay : An Alternative Industry, Not A Hobby!, Garry Palmer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

When product prices are low, or after bad seasons, it is tempting to look for a fix. But farm and station tourism is not that short-term fix. Before going into such ventures, landholders need to examine all other alternatives that might be available on their properties. GARRY PALMER'S advice could save a lot of heartache for prospective hosts.

The Effects Of Supplier Fairness On Vulnerable Resellers, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp Feb 1995

The Effects Of Supplier Fairness On Vulnerable Resellers, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines the role of supplier fairness in developing long-term relationships between relatively smaller, vulnerable resellers and larger, powerful suppliers. The authors conceptualize two components of fairness-distributive fairness, that is, the fairness of outcomes received by the reseller from carrying the supplier's line, and procedural fairness, the fairness of procedures and processes used by the supplier in relation to its resellers. Testing their hypotheses from the perspective of automobile dealers, the authors find strong evidence that vulnerable resellers' perceptions of both distributive and procedural fairness enhance their relationship quality, although these effects are moderated by the level of outcomes …

Salespersons’ Perceptions About Sales Contests: Towards A Greater Understanding, William H. Murphy, Ravipreet S. Sohi Jan 1995

Salespersons’ Perceptions About Sales Contests: Towards A Greater Understanding, William H. Murphy, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Aims to improve understanding of an important and widely used management tool for motivating the salesforce – sales contests. Begins by introducing the question: what factors are associated with salespeople's feelings towards a sales contest? Several potentially relevant characteristics that are expected to be associated with various feelings towards contests are discussed. To test the hypotheses, data were collected through verbal protocols and surveys from salespeople belonging to a division of a Fortune 100 firm. Results indicate that salespeople's self-esteem, commitment level, and career stage play a role in influencing feelings towards the sales contest.

The impetus for this research …
