Over the years, American food has become more and more popular in China. Today, the Chinese are more open to trying new cuisines. To fully understand the forces that have catalyzed the growing presence of American foods in China, my research project demonstrates the complex web of factors that shape how American food businesses’ presence in China has changed over the last decade. Examining a diversity of sources, including existing trend data, my analysis focuses on the domestic and global factors that have facilitated the growing presence of American food restaurants in China. Using this research as a jumping off …

A Decade Of Downfall: The Industrial And Financial Self-Destruction Of The American Automobile Industry Through 2009, Max Samuel Ellenbogen

Senior Projects Spring 2016

This paper examines the developments that lead up to the government bailout of General Motors and Chrysler in 2009. The purpose is to examine and discover the historical, industrial and financial factors that drove American cars into the ground. In today’s society, the perception is that foreign automobiles are superior to domestic vehicles. This comes half a century after culture in the United States circulated around the American automobile. The American big business techniques built a manufacturing empire, differentiated the US from the foreigners and then weakened the long-term development of the automotive industry. Financialization became a support in an …

The Affordable Care Act: Five Years Later, Andrew Dana Izatt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The challenges facing the American health care system are well known and manifold. The United States pays substantially more for its health care than any other developed, industrialized nation. Per capita health care spending in 2012 was $8,745, up from $356 in 1970 without marked improvements in life expectancy, quality of life, or outcomes. But despite all of our health spending, large portions of our population go without health insurance. Being uninsured carries real consequences. A report published in the American Journal of Public Health, by researchers at Harvard Medical School, using statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and …

The Black Ceiling: Barriers To Career Advancement For African American Women In The Us, Victoria C. Sepand

Scripps Senior Theses

Black women in America do not deal exclusively with race or gender discrimination, but many times a combination of the two. This qualitative study seeks to address how black women experience this double discrimination within their organizations’ cultures, policies, and practices. In addition, the career journeys and experiences of the participants interviewed will be analyzed in comparison to the current literature, which states mentoring, training and networking, and women-friendliness are the most effective methods to advancing women and women of color in the workplace. Ultimately, this study discovers that for those methods to work, there needs to be more structure …

As Seen In Vogue: An Analytical Observation Of Nudity In French And American Vogue, Elizabeth A. Kiehn

Honors Theses

For centuries, Europe has been the leader in fashion production and innovation. At the heart of this continent lies the fashion capital of the world—France. French designers have always been on the cutting edge of fashion. Setting trends, shocking consumers, and enticing the world have been normal everyday activities for them as if it is in their blood. French culture is much more daring and open about sexuality in comparison to American culture, however, American designers and retailers are still heavily influenced by French fashion designs. This begs the question then: Are French fashion magazines equally influential on American fashion …

Will There Be A Free Trade Area Of The Americas (Ftaa) By The Year 2005?, Tara Mccaffrey

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Last December's Summit of the Americas consolidated the new convergence of values between the U.S. and Latin Americas and set out an ambitious action plan. The commitment to negotiate a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) by the year 2005 was not only because it will bring its participants higher economic growth, but also because it symbolizes the common philosophy of the hemisphere -- of free trade enterprise, competition, and efficiency; of decision making by markets not governments; of growth and opportunity, rather than centralized government planning. It is also the philosophy which most powerfully supports the profound democratic …
