New Plant Engineering Techniques, R&D Investment And International Trade, Stéphan Marette, Anne-Célia Disdier, Anastasia Bodnar, John C. Beghin
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
New plant engineering techniques (NPETs) may significantly improve both production and quality of foods. Some consumers and regulators around the world might be reluctant to accept such products and the global market penetration of these products may remain low. We develop a parsimonious economic model for R&D investment in food innovations to identify conditions under which NPET technology emerges in the context of international trade. The framework integrates consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for the new food, the uncertainty of R&D processes, the associated regulatory cost of approval, and the competition between domestic and foreign products. With generic applicability, the …

The Brand Relationship Of Cult-Like Following: Developing Scales Of Measurement In Apple And Catholic Devotees, Yi-Chia Wu, Michael Minor
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this research aims to fill in the gap in the religion-brand relationship, and explores what constitutes a cult-like allegiance to a brand, by examining subjects’ relationship to the Apple brand, comparing survey response by subjects who were “devotees” versus “indifferents” to Catholicism and to Apple. This paper uses Ninian Smart’s (1989)“Seven Dimensions of Religion” as a theoretical framework to develop scales of measurement among Apple and Catholic devotees. The contribution of this research is the development of Catholic and Apple scales. The Catholic scale extracted three factors and the Apple scale generated four factors in CFA.

Liberating Trapped Cash: A Case Study Of Trapped Cash At Apple And Microsoft, Russell P. Engel, Bridget M. Lyons, Danny A. Pannese
WCBT Faculty Publications
The topic of trapped cash, or cash permanently reinvested overseas to avoid tax upon repatriation, has become a hot topic in accounting, finance and policy circles over the past two years. This case study analyzes the activities of two major technology firms, Microsoft and Apple, to liberate enormous holdings of trapped cash. The case prompts a discussion of the topic of trapped cash, stakeholder considerations and tools available to manage cash balances held outside the United States. Pay Attention To The Weather Of Business And Life – And Don’T Steer Into An Iceberg, Bob Porter
UCF Forum
A big part of my day is spent thinking about improving business strategy and developing a competitive advantage. It’s what I do in the classroom, as director of UCF’s executive development center, and when I help other businesses. It even spills over into the cycling club I manage.
A Problem Solving Approach To Enterprise Filevault 2 Management And Integration, Nicholas Cobb
A Problem Solving Approach To Enterprise Filevault 2 Management And Integration, Nicholas Cobb
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Consumer technology adoption into large enterprise environments is occurring at an unprecedented rate. Employees require the flexibility and efficiency of using operating systems, computers, and mobility products they are familiar with and that enable their productivity. Due to this industry phenomenon, one large shipping enterprise must work to create solutions to integrate Apple’s OS X operating system into its traditional Windows-based operating environment. This level of integration must take place carefully to enable usability and foster the continued data security of enterprise assets. This paper describes the steps and methodology taken, as well as the rationale used, to accomplish the …

Understanding Online Brand Communities: Netnographic Study Of Apple Iphone Consumers, May Aung, Keija Wu, Laila Rohani, Khalil Rohani
Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2013
This study extends the concept of brand communities. The netnography approach has been applied to two online brand communities, both central to Apple iPhone consumers. This study reveals two cultural manifestations with their own passions and communal norms not detected by previous research. This study, thus, enriches the conceptual understanding of brand communities. It also offers contribution toward understanding consumers of high technology brands, an area where few studies have been conducted to date.

Extended Consumer-Brand Relationship Theory, May Aung, Kapil Gurbani, Samuel Hip Seng Lei
Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2013
This study examines online communities for two top brands: Apple iPhone and Blackberry smartphones. A number of online brand communities (online forums) such as the iPhone business affiliated website www.apple.com, iPhone consumers’ website www.everythingicafe.com, and the Blackberry consumers’ websites www.blackberry.com and www.crackberry.com were explored. This research extends the conceptual underpinnings of the existing consumer-brand relationship theory by incorporating the concept of sharing. This study offers insights for academia in the marketing and consumer behavior field as well as professionals in the high-technology industry.

The 2011 death of Steve Jobs, Apple CEO and cofounder, generated a flood of articles in the popular press acknowledging his influence on the design and delivery of consumer products that changed the way multiple generations work and play. Aasb138 Intangible Assets - The Bad Apple In The Ifrs Barrel, Sandra H. Chapple
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Within the raft of new international accounting standards, there is at least one, namely AASB138 (IAS38) 'Intangible Assets', which not only changes the way that Australian companies account for and report their intangible assets, but advocates a treatment that is conceptually flawed and which fails to provide relevant information to the users of financial statements. Despite resistance to the new standard by Australian constituents, it became effective from 1 st January, 2005, and will have a significant impact on the financial statements of Australian reporting entities. These assertions are supported by reference to submissions offered to the AASB and IASB, …
