A Simulation For Managing Complexity In Sales And Operations Planning Decisions, Scott Duhadway, David Dreyfus Oct 2017

A Simulation For Managing Complexity In Sales And Operations Planning Decisions, Scott Duhadway, David Dreyfus

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Within the classroom it is often difficult to convey the complexities and intricacies that go into making sales and operations planning decisions. This article describes an in‐class simulation that allows students to gain hands‐on experience with the complexities in making forecasting, inventory, and supplier selection decisions as part of the sales and operations planning process. The activity may be run during one class period and is flexible enough to accommodate almost any class size. During the simulation, students may apply forecasting techniques, inventory management concepts, and supplier selection processes, while experiencing the effects of supply chain disruptions. This simulation is …

Practical Supply Chain Management Knowledge From Industry-Academia Dialogue, Michael Haughton May 2017

Practical Supply Chain Management Knowledge From Industry-Academia Dialogue, Michael Haughton

Business Faculty Publications

Value co-creation, which can be defined as a joint initiative by two or more supply chain members to create value that cannot be created by the sole effort of one member, is a cornerstone concept in Supply Chain Management (SCM). To provide needed clarity about the concept, the invitation-only summit "World Class Supply Chain 2017: Value Co-creation", was convened on May 10th, 2017 in Milton, Ontario. The summit brought together accomplished executives, scholars, and students in the SCM field to engage in dialogue directed at uncovering actionable insights about three crucial issues:

  1. The business benefits of value co-creation
  2. The …

The Role Of Prior Sales Experience Of Buyers And Duration In Buyer-Seller Relationships, Scott C. Ambrose, Nwamaka A. Anaza, Brian N. Rutherford Apr 2017

The Role Of Prior Sales Experience Of Buyers And Duration In Buyer-Seller Relationships, Scott C. Ambrose, Nwamaka A. Anaza, Brian N. Rutherford

Publications

This paper examines the impact that a buyer’s prior sales experience and the duration of the buyer-salesperson relationship has on the satisfaction and commitment linkages established within the literature. First, two key facets of satisfaction (social and economic) are linked to buyer’s commitment to the salesperson. Next, buyer-salesperson relationship duration is examined as an influencer between the satisfaction and commitment linkages. Following this, the study shifts its focus to examine if and how buyers with prior sales experience view the buyer-salesperson relationship different than buyers without prior sales experience. Findings of the study highlight the importance of developing our understanding …

Supply Chain Coordination With Two-Part Tariffs Under Information Asymmetry, Chongqi Wu, Kunpeng Lu, Tianqin Shi Jan 2017

Supply Chain Coordination With Two-Part Tariffs Under Information Asymmetry, Chongqi Wu, Kunpeng Lu, Tianqin Shi

Faculty Publications

Supply chain coordination literature indicates that two-part tariff contracts cannot coordinate a supply chain with a supplier and a retailer under information asymmetry, but can coordinate the channel under full information, while leaving the retailer zero profit. Motivated by the practice of Costco Business Centres, we incorporate customer heterogeneity, near-saturated retail market and asymmetric information into a stylised model. The retailer has the knowledge of customer heterogeneity while the supplier does not. The supplier, on the other hand, designs a menu of two-part tariffs for the retailer to choose from. We have found that two-part tariffs can coordinate the supply …

The importance and complexity of the problems associated with coordinating multiple organizations to configure value propositions for customers has drawn the attention of multiple disciplines. In an effort to clarify and consolidate terms, this conceptual research examines both supply chain management (SCM) and system of systems (SoS) literature to postulate, from a value-chain perspective, what roles integration and collaboration play in helping supply chains satisfy customer requirements. A literature review analysis was used to identify the commonalities and differences between supply chain management and system of systems approaches to examining interfirm coordination of value creation efforts. Although a framework of …
