Although Utahans in general experience lower rates of poverty than the national average (11.3% in Utah vs. 14.7% nationwide), Utah women are more likely than Utah men to live in poverty, especially women who are heads of households and/or single parents. Many factors influence the levels of poverty among Utah women. The gender wage gap in Utah is one of the highest in the nation; women are much more likely to work minimum wage jobs, and women in Utah have lower levels of educational achievement—particularly at the bachelor’s degree level and higher—than women across the nation. Utah women within specific …

Nearly one in two women in the U.S. will experience some form of sexual violence victimization in her lifetime (broadly defined), and Utah has the same overall rate. According to the most recent Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice report, when considering more specific definitions, one in three Utah women has been sexually assaulted, and one in six women report having been raped. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, rape occurs in Utah at a rate higher than the national average. Hence, sexual assault is a serious problem within the state.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

In most developed countries today, having a work force with skill sets in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are seen as essential to long-term economic growth. In many countries, the demand for STEM workers is expected to grow faster than any other occupation over the next decade. Yet the research shows that females are underrepresented in STEM-related fields. The numbers of females entering into STEM careers is generally lower than males, but there are countries where females account for a greater percentage than males in other fields or occupations. In the U.S. women continue to be underrepresented in STEM …

The purpose of both the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) Research & Policy Brief Series and the Research Snapshot Series is to provide data that can be useful to individuals, groups, organizations, and communities toward efforts to improve the equality and impact of girls and women throughout the state. A host of state rankings has continually listed Utah as one of the worst states in the nation for women. Although we disagree with some of the measures, it remains clear that change is needed to strengthen the impact of Utah women for the good of women themselves, families, communities, …

The majority of top leadership teams do not fully realize the value of having women in key positions. A large body of research has shown this is the case across all sectors, including business, government, political, nonprofit, and education. Depending on the entity, this may include women in both paid and unpaid roles ranging from positions such as supervisor, coordinator and manager, to school principal, council member, CEO, or board director. Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as legislatures, universities, schools, and city and municipality councils. Organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold …

A Macro Economic Approach To Gender Disparities In Hiring At The Ceo Level, Abigail R. Wood

Business and Economics Summer Fellows

More men named John run S&P 1500 companies than all women combined, causing many to wonder what factors are limiting women’s career advancement. While many studies have been written about the topic of women’s success in the business world, most focus on individual firms or positions and therefore miss macroeconomic factors such as women’s completion of master’s degree programs and labor force participation rates. This research specifically examines trends in women’s obtainment of master’s degrees in business …

Is Utah a good place for women to start and run businesses? You may be misled if you rely on what the media has been reporting the past few years about women in Utah. A host of state rankings has continually put Utah as one of the worst states in the nation for women. For example, Utah did not fare well in the WalletHub’s recent “2015’s Best and Worst States for Women’s Equality.” Utah was also included in the New York Post’s “5 Places Women Shouldn’t Spend Their Travel Dollars,” and in 2014 Utah was ranked as the worst state …
