Manufacturing companies are under constant pressure to optimize the economic sustain-ability of their production systems. Production planning and optimization is a well-established strategy for considering resource constraints and improving economic productivity. This study proposes an integrated fuzzy goal planning and the theory of constraints for production planning and optimization. To this end, a hybrid Delphi–Buckley method was used to identify the relevant goals and a paired matrix questionnaire was used to determine the fuzzy weights of the goals. Furthermore, a fuzzy bottleneck detection algorithm was used to deal with the bottlenecks. A case study in the cable industry is presented …

A Novel Three-Stage Distance-Based Consensus Ranking Method, Nazila Aghayi, Madjid Tavana May 2018

A Novel Three-Stage Distance-Based Consensus Ranking Method, Nazila Aghayi, Madjid Tavana

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

In this study, we propose a three-stage weighted sum method for identifying the group ranks of alternatives. In the first stage, a rank matrix, similar to the cross-efficiency matrix, is obtained by computing the individual rank position of each alternative based on importance weights. In the second stage, a secondary goal is defined to limit the vector of weights since the vector of weights obtained in the first stage is not unique. Finally, in the third stage, the group rank position of alternatives is obtained based on a distance of individual rank positions. The third stage determines a consensus solution …

Recent Fuzzy Generalisations Of Rough Sets Theory: A Systematic Review And Methodological Critique Of The Literature, Abbas Mardani, Mehrbakhsh Nilashi, Jurgita Antucheviciene, Madjid Tavana, Romualdas Bausys, Othman Ibrahim

Rough set theory has been used extensively in fields of complexity, cognitive sciences, and artificial intelligence, especially in numerous fields such as expert systems, knowledge discovery, information system, inductive reasoning, intelligent systems, data mining, pattern recognition, decision-making, and machine learning. Rough sets models, which have been recently proposed, are developed applying the different fuzzy generalisations. Currently, there is not a systematic literature review and classification of these new generalisations about rough set models. Therefore, in this review study, the attempt is made to provide a comprehensive systematic review of methodologies and applications of recent generalisations discussed in the area of …

A Multi-User Decision Support System For Online City Bus Tour Planning, Saeed Asadi Bagloee, Madjid Tavana, Debora Di Caprio, Mohsen Asadi, Mitra Heshmati Mar 2017

A Multi-User Decision Support System For Online City Bus Tour Planning, Saeed Asadi Bagloee, Madjid Tavana, Debora Di Caprio, Mohsen Asadi, Mitra Heshmati

Tourism is rapidly becoming a sustainable pathway toward economic prosperity for host countries and communities. Recent advances in information and communications technology, the smartphone, the Internet and Wi-Fi have given a boost to the tourism industry. The city bus tour (CBT) service is one of the most successful businesses in the tourism industry. However, there exists no smart decision support system determining the most efficient way to plan the itinerary of a CBT. In this research, we report on the ongoing development of a mobile application (app) and a website for tourists, hoteliers and travel agents to connect with city …

Autonomous Vehicles: Challenges, Opportunities, And Future Implications For Transportation Policies, Saeed Asadi Bagloee, Madjid Tavana, Mohsen Asadi, Tracey Oliver

This study investigates the challenges and opportunities pertaining to transportation policies that may arise as a result of emerging autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. AV technologies can decrease the transportation cost and increase accessibility to low-income households and persons with mobility issues. This emerging technology also has far-reaching applications and implications beyond all current expectations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the relevant literature and explores a broad spectrum of issues from safety to machine ethics. An indispensable part of a prospective AV development is communication over cars and infrastructure (connected vehicles). A major knowledge gap exists in AV technology …

Self-Organizing Social Networks By Preference Similarity And The Networking Capacity Of Their Users, Debora Di Caprio, Francisco J. Santos-Arteaga, Madjid Tavana May 2016

Self-Organizing Social Networks By Preference Similarity And The Networking Capacity Of Their Users, Debora Di Caprio, Francisco J. Santos-Arteaga, Madjid Tavana

Consider the decision faced by the user of a social media site of whether or not to accept a friendship request from another user, given the limited amount of information available before deciding. We formalize the problem by defining the expected utility trade-offs derived from the request and simulate the resulting incentives numerically. These incentives provide the basis on which to build social networks determined by the different expectations and preferences of their users. Social networks are generated using a self-organizing map to cluster the decision makers (DMs) by their friendship acceptance behaviour. This behaviour is determined by the distribution …

A Practical Taxonomy Of Methods And Literature For Managing Uncertain Spatial Data In Geographic Information Systems, Madjid Tavana, Weiru Liu, Paul Elmore, Frederick E. Petry, Brian S. Bourgeois Dec 2015

A Practical Taxonomy Of Methods And Literature For Managing Uncertain Spatial Data In Geographic Information Systems, Madjid Tavana, Weiru Liu, Paul Elmore, Frederick E. Petry, Brian S. Bourgeois

Perfect information is seldom available to man or machines due to uncertainties inherent in real world problems. Uncertainties in geographic information systems (GIS) stem from either vague/ambiguous or imprecise/inaccurate/incomplete information and it is necessary for GIS to develop tools and techniques to manage these uncertainties. There is a widespread agreement in the GIS community that although GIS has the potential to support a wide range of spatial data analysis problems, this potential is often hindered by the lack of consistency and uniformity. Uncertainties come in many shapes and forms, and processing uncertain spatial data requires a practical taxonomy to aid …

One of the goals of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry is to celebrate the contributions of women to science. A question that has been frequently asked in this regard is... Why is it necessary to highlight women in the "age of equality"? The reasons are varied but the facts are that many women scientists worked in obscurity throughout the 19th and even well into the 20th century, sometimes publishing anonymously to be heard. This celebration of Women in Science is one way to recognize both the resiliency and passion of these women. As part of this celebration, Chemistry Central …
