Road Rescue Implements A Continuous Process Improvement Framework, John Olson, Paul Savory

Continuous improvement programs traditionally focus on making small incremental improvements to a system. Unfortunately, their success can be limited due to the rapid changing environment within which most small companies operate. Improvement efforts should be flexible enough to capitalize on incremental and radical changes to a system. This paper presents a case analysis of how Road Rescue, an ambulance manufacturer, uses a continuous improvement framework to capitalize on both radical and incremental improvement opportunities. Results include a 10% increase in throughput, reduced cycle time of 44%, increased customer satisfaction, and higher quality.

Previous studies examine the potential benefits of using classroom games and simulations, finding that their use generally increases knowledge and interest level. However, few (if any) of these studies examine whether performance in such simulations is relevant to these outcomes. Particularly in investments, where trading simulations are common, the performance relative to peers and the market can be objectively determined based on portfolio return. Thus, we extend the existing literature by studying the impact of portfolio performance on knowledge level and interest in the profession. Weather or terrorism-related disasters at seaports can lead to significant economic losses from vessel and cargo delays. In times of such disasters, port capacities and optimal shipment routings would change rapidly, requiring near real-time analyses for planning response operations. To address this challenge, we offer a decision support system to help port networks analyze disaster response scenarios. As part of the model, an algorithm routes arriving ships to ports to optimize the use of network capacity with respect to ocean and inland transportation, port and inventory capital costs. The possibility of a first-mover advantage arises in a variety of strategic choices, including product introductions, business start-ups, and mergers and acquisitions. The strategic management literature reflects ambiguity regarding the likelihood that a first mover can or will capture additional value. This paper uses a real options approach to address the optimal timing of strategic moves. Previous studies have modeled real options using either a perpetual or a European financial option. In this paper, we develop a practical and flexible methodology for generating a random collection of discrete joint probability distributions, subject to a specified information set, which can be expressed as a set of linear constraints (e.g., marginal assessments, moments, or pairwise correlations). Our approach begins with the construction of a polytope using this set of linear constraints. This polytope defines the set of all joint distributions that match the given information; we refer to this set as the “truth set.”We then implement aMonte Carlo procedure, the Hit-and- Run algorithm, to sample points uniformly from the truth set. In this paper, a prediction model is presented that estimates the evacuation time in an emergency situation for hospitals. The model is generic enough to be used in various hospital settings. This model can provide incident managers with estimates of the evacuation times of different types of patients and can offer support to the managers with their resource allocation decisions in emergency situations. This study examines the impact of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology on the inventory control practices of a small-to-medium retailer using a proof of concept (PoC) approach. The exploratory study was conducted using a single case study of a hardware retailer stocking 5000 product lines provided by 110 active suppliers. To analyze the present mode of operation, procedural documents, semi-structured interviews and a participant observation was conducted.
