Learning To Be Reflexive In Qualitative Research: Improving Training For Doctoral Students In Business Schools, Eun Su Lee
The Qualitative Report
Doctoral education in business schools is focused on a functional approach to research training. While this approach is necessary, it rarely encompasses reflexivity in qualitative research, despite its importance. This paper provides the groundwork for educators in business schools to reconsider the conventional approach to teaching qualitative methods. It draws on my personal and professional experience as a key resource to shape its examination of doctoral education in conducting qualitative research. The paper offers points of reflection on the struggle students may face in conducting rigorous qualitative research without appropriately understanding the influence of self with previous experience, preconceived ideas, …

“I Might As Well Get My Education”: The Experiences Of Black Male Division Iii College Athletes, Lisa M. Rubin, Rhema D. Fuller, Sarah Stokowski
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Division III college athletes have been largely ignored in the growing literature involving college sport. Given that the majority of college athletes that participate in high profile sports are athletes of color, there is a need to explore the experiences of this population, specifically at the Division III level. Informed by the Excellence Beyond Athletics (EBA) framework, which empowers students of color, especially Black male athletes, the purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of Black male athletes at two rural Division III institutions. Ten Black male Division III athletes took part in semi-structured interviews. Using inductive analysis …

Case Study As A Suitable Method To Research Strategy As Practice Perspective, Rosalia Lavarda, Christiane Bellucci
The Qualitative Report
The goal of this study was to comprehend how case studies are used to analyze strategy as practice perspective phenomena inside organizations. Through a narrative review, associated with a systematic analysis of the literature, we revisited papers published in high index management journals that have presented the case study as method to analyze phenomena from the strategy as practice perspective. We understand that the case study method was used appropriate to analyze in-depth phenomena concerning the perspective of strategy as practice. Both, the method, and the strategy as practice perspective look at the phenomena in their singularity. This study contributes …

A central tenet of patient-centered care is to truly and deeply understand how patients experience health care. One particular qualitative method, patient shadowing, holds the promise of seeing things through the patient’s eyes in real time. The purpose of this research is to utilize patient shadowing to capture the realities of patient experiences in an outpatient family medicine clinic and to report opportunities for improvement to clinic leadership. A total of twenty (20) patients were shadowed at a family medicine outpatient clinic over the course of eight (8) different days, providing a variety of circumstances including staffing levels, shift changes, …

Exploring Factors Influencing Adoption Of Blockchain In Accounting Applications Using Technology–Organization–Environment Framework, Sujata Seshadrinathan, Shalini Chandra
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Blockchain is one of the most promising technological innovations of recent times, with the potential to change the very way information systems are used by the accounting function. It is however expected to be disruptive and yet to see high adoption rates. Identification of factors influencing the adoption is required to empower the accounting fraternity to harness the full potential of blockchains. This study is one of the first to inductively explore and develop an adoption model for blockchains as well as for accounting applications with theoretical groundings in the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, which has been extended with a variable …

Consuming Digital Technologies To Enact Identities: An Exploratory Study Among Mothers, Meera Venkatraman
Consuming Digital Technologies To Enact Identities: An Exploratory Study Among Mothers, Meera Venkatraman
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
This manuscript explores mothers’ consumption of digital technologies to enact their individual, relational, and familial identities. Using multi-method qualitative research techniques including phenomenological interviewing, image- based auto-elicitation, and home visits, it finds mothers purposefully consume digital technologies to negotiate, construct, and enact identities. Specifically, mothers use a repertoire of four appropriation strategies: mastering, partnering, domesticating, and avoiding. Mastery is a multi- year project in which mothers enroll in digital educational programs, qualify, and create new professional identities. In domestication, mothers assert themselves on technology managing their inclusion/exclusion in the time and spaces of family life, thereby enacting parental identities. In …

Denzin’S Paradigm Shift: Revisiting Triangulation In Qualitative Research, Patricia Fusch, Gene E. Fusch, Lawrence R. Ness
Journal of Sustainable Social Change
One approach to promote social change, mitigate bias, and enhance reaching data saturation is through triangulation: multiple sources of data. Triangulation adds depth to the data that are collected. In this scholarly essay, the authors discuss the continuing relevance of Denzin’s approach to triangulation of data. Included is a critique of researchers who have posited other approaches to triangulation that appear to be merely a renaming of Denzin’s original paradigm rather new outcomes. The intended audience is novice researchers and doctoral students who can benefit from clarity on some common misconceptions about triangulation.

Diffusion And Learning: Twenty Years Of Sports Betting Culture In Finland, Matias Karekallas, Pauliina Raento, Taina Renkonen
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
How did people learn to bet on sports and how did a sports betting culture develop in Finland? How has this setting evolved over space and time? The answers contribute to the growing understanding of learning, socialization, and contextualization in the study of gambling and may inspire service providers, regulators, and harm preventers alike. We argue that broad structural patterns and micro-cultural processes should be investigated jointly and qualitative information should complement quantitative monitoring of human behavior. We approach the spread of sports betting to, and within Finland, from the perspective of innovation diffusion. We rely on this theory’s space- …

A Proposed Typology Of Odyssey Slot Machine Gamblers, Lorraine Cebollero, Karl Mayer, Stanley Pinkos
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
This paper discusses the development of a typology of gamblers who play the Odyssey slot machine. Qualitative research methods were employed, using an ethnographic approach to the research setting. Two typologies are presented and discussed, one for the Odyssey Players and a second for the Odyssey Observers. While the potential application of these two typologies to the more general classification of all slot machine gamblers is unknown, it is believed that this paper represents the first study of its kind in the gaming industry. As such, it may provide a foundation for both academics who are interested in conducting further …

A lot of interest in the baby-boomer generation, those who were born after World War II, has emerged since their retirement has been accelerated. However, their increased purchasing power has made them more attractive consumers than any other generation, and they have become a fascinating niche market in the depressed economy. This research selected middle-class women of the baby-boomer generation who have had powerful effects on society and have emerged as an attractive niche market, and attempted to understand their lives intensively. Encountering One Another: Feminist Relationships In Organizational Research, Kristina A. Bourne
Encountering One Another: Feminist Relationships In Organizational Research, Kristina A. Bourne
Organization Management Journal
As a graduate student attempting to integrate feminist principles into my academic endeavors, I eagerly entered the research field to examine how women business owners who feel a conflict between feminism and capitalism enact their everyday lives. I chose participant observation, a common methodology in feminist research, with the aim of getting “inside” these women’s lives to better understand their experiences. However, as the fieldwork proceeded, my focus shifted to examining the space in which the realities of the feminist organizational researcher and of the feminist business owner encounter one another. This paper reflects upon how we made sense of …
