Historical Perspectives In Volatility Forecasting Methods With Machine Learning, Zhiang Qiu, Clemens Kownatzki, Fabien Scalzo, Eun Sang Cha
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Volatility forecasting in the financial market plays a pivotal role across a spectrum of disciplines, such as risk management, option pricing, and market making. However, volatility forecasting is challenging because volatility can only be estimated, and different factors influence volatility, ranging from macroeconomic indicators to investor sentiments. While recent works suggest advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence for volatility forecasting, a comprehensive benchmark of current statistical and learning-based methods for such purposes is lacking. Thus, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the historical evolution of volatility forecasting with a comparative benchmark of key landmark models. We …

This research paper analyzes the causes and effects of the bankruptcy of the investment banking company, Lehman Brothers. We examined the economic and financial conditions of the business leading up to the collapse, what they truly were and how that differed from what investors were misled to believe. We will also explain the falsified financial statements and show how they deceived investors, along with the accounting ethics and rules that were violated. We also discussed the economy after the collapse and how it affected not only investors, but others outside the company as well.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
As aviation has been one of the fastest-growing sources of emissions, this paper explores sustainable solutions in the equation of the economic savings from the fuel tankering practice, in a way it could represent gains of credibility for this industry (Boussauw & Vanoutrive, 2019). The fuel expenses in Brazil have been responsible for the highest operational cost for the airlines and, as a result, there has been an ongoing pursuit of the highest level of efficiency (ANAC, 2019). In this context, this study has been focused on the emerging Brazilian aviation market, and uses primary data collected from three major …

Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam
Ceo Types And Firm Efficiency, Lok Chi Lam
Mountain Plains Business Conference
This paper investigates the connection between CEO types and firm efficiency. I utilize the general ability index (GAI) as a proxy to examine and separate CEO types: generalist CEOs and specialist CEOs. Initially, I applied the pooled ordinary least square on 26,830 firm-year observations to explore the GAI effect on firm efficiency. The finding shows that GAI has a negative impact on firm efficiency. It indicates that CEOs with lower GAI are better at improving firm efficiency; for instance, specialist CEOs are preferable to generalist CEOs. Further analysis of CEO types using the quadrant method supports this result.

A "Russian Romance Scam" Discussion Case Study, Karl Borden
Mountain Plains Business Conference
It should not be a surprise that the increasing ubiquity of online dating and the use of social media generally for romantic liaisons has in turn provided fertile ground for a substantive increase in romantic con games and scams. The Internet Crime Complaint Center of the FBI in 2018 reported that online dating and romance scams was one of the top Internet scams reported with over 18,000 complaints reporting losses of over $362 million. (Whitty, 2015; pp444).
In 2020, this author received a fairly standard “broadcast” email that he immediately recognized as the opening play of a “Honey Pot” scam. …

Using this data, the Financial Wellness Lab (FWL) then analyzes and applies advanced machine learning techniques to gain meaningful insights on the respondents. Of the many areas the FWL investigates regarding this data, the primary focus is identifying similar groups of individuals (clusters), and how these groups differ from one another. Aspects such as financial residency, savings, spending, and debt all play an important role in differentiating between these groups, and also play a role in financial wellbeing. Since this survey has been …

As the global digital economy continues to grow in interest and financial worth, it is imperative to harvest data to gain early information on this nuanced economy. Already, we have witnessed billions of dollars in losses and wins at the blink of an eye, encouragement to invest from well-known celebrities and politicians, and high anxiety from the newness, power consumption, and potential outcomes of this nuanced system. Stemming from the lack of solid evidence in this emerging field, we hope to gain more insight on the early players and variation within the digitized economy. Similarly, we hope to identify specific …

Cryptocurrency market has attracted interest of both researchers and investors. It is a comparatively newer mode of transactions; therefore, both the agents are interested in the movement of these currencies in terms of volatility and profit. This research makes an effort to examine these phenomena with the help of long-range memory in the Bitcoin market using Generalized Hurst exponent methodology. For this purpose, the daily dataset spanning from 26th August 2010 to 19th April 2018 is collected, prepared and analyzed. Findings reveal interesting facts that the Hurst exponents for almost every year are above 0.5, and the long-range …

Branding, Internationalization And Performance Of Restaurant Chains, Saarthak Bhatia, Joel Smith
Symposium of Student Scholars
Every year, restaurant companies try and find new and innovative ways to grow their business. Many companies look towards creating new brands and expanding internationally as a means of achieving this goal but do multibranding and the scope of internationalization (number of countries) have an influence on the firm performance of restaurant companies? We dive into this by looking at data from over 100 publicly traded companies to see what the results show.
The examination period for this study was 1997 to 2019. Data for 2013-2019 is still being collected. Sample selection started with 118 publicly traded restaurant firms listed …

Many African businesses lag in financial performance compared to the performance of companies in the West. Despite this, the continent’s economic output has continued to rise considerably in the past two decades, but many of these economic achievements have been discredited. Despite the West’s view of Africa as a continent unprepared for economic growth due to simmering conflict, threats of terror, and other barriers to business, African business has continued to boom. Over the past two decades, Africa has made massive strides to “catch up to the West.” In fact, according to experts, many countries in Africa have experienced what …

Understanding The Effectivity And Increased Reliance Of Credit Risk Machine Learning Models In Banking, Grishma Baruah
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Credit risk analysis and making accurate investment and lending decisions has been a challenge for the financial industry for many years, as can be seen with the 2008 financial crisis. However, with the rise of machine learning models and predictive analytics, there has been a shift to increased reliance on technology for determining credit risk. This transition to machine learning comes with both advantages, such as potentially eliminating human error and assumptions from lending decisions, and disadvantages, such as time constraints, data usage inabilities, and lack of understanding nuances in machine learning models. In this paper, I look at four …

The New Space Policy Regime And Its Financial Foundation, Tamara Campbell
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Post the global financial crisis of 2008, the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) sought to expand the space economy through a public policy of commercialization. This has brought major changes to the composition of space mission funding strategies, now repositioned as public private partnerships (P3s). Formed to fund space missions with private finance in lieu of public funding, P3s are investment and risk-sharing vehicles evaluated by financial intermediary institutions, insurers, and at times, the courts in the case where there is foreign direct investment (FDI) agreement. For this reason, it is arguable P3s have exceptional influence on the scope …
The Financial Impact Of Covid-19 On Nonprofit Organizations, Dr. Charles Harrington
The Financial Impact Of Covid-19 On Nonprofit Organizations, Dr. Charles Harrington
SC Upstate Research Symposium
Abstract — Scholars and practitioners have argued that effective financial management, particularly the development of operating reserves, can help nonprofits survive economic shocks. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a significant impact on the nonprofit sector, provides an opportunity to test whether nonprofits have followed that recommendation, and if so, whether nonprofits with operating reserves were better prepared for the pandemic. Using data from an original survey of more than 600 nonprofit human service and arts organizations, administered when most states had stay-at-home restrictions, we show that most nonprofits experienced an immediate impact on their programs and financing. Yet, those …

When You Don’T Know What You Don’T Know: How Two New Collections Librarians Right-Sized A Collections Budget, Cara M. Cadena, Marcia Lee
Charleston Library Conference
Due to impending campus-wide downsizing, the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Libraries projected that a worst-case scenario would result in a 14% cut to the library’s collections budget for fiscal year 2020. In the same year, GVSU Libraries welcomed several new members of its leadership team, including the dean, two associate deans, head of systems, head of collections, business administrator, and a vacancy after the long-time acquisitions manager retired. Budget cuts and staff turnover are tough, but they prompted a much-needed reassessment of roles, culture, and priorities in the library. Different approaches to spending and curating the library’s collections were …
