“What Counts and What Gets Counted” (Bloomfield 2016)[1] is an innovative way of teaching managerial accounting. The 1st edition of the book won the 2014 Jim Bulloch Award for Innovations in Management Accounting Education, and has only gotten better since then. However, the book suffers from two significant limitations. First, the book was intended primarily for MBA students, not for accounting undergrads. As a result, the book doesn’t go into sufficient depth on some of the technical topics that accounting majors need to understand. Second, the book lacks a bank of practice problems and solutions for students to …

The second weekend of November, a team of students from the School of Accountancy competed in Deloitte’s FanTAXtic regional competition in Salt Lake City and received a second place finish right behind UT Austin, the number one accounting school in the nation. The team consisted of two sophomores, Shannan Peel and Ashley Hernandez, two upper division undergraduates, Slater Duncan and Kyle Merrill, and one graduate student/team leader, Derek Droesbeke. Bonnie Villarreal served as advisor to the tax team.

Recent MAcc (Master of Accounting) graduate Dillon Jones will spend the next year in Norwalk, CT, at a prestigious internship for the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). The Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program is “a one-year term, during which the individual becomes highly involved with the accounting standards-setting process and comes to have an in-depth understanding of the roles played by preparers, auditors, and users of financial information.” Jones is among only seven interns who were selected and is only the second Huntsman student to receive this internship.

Quigley/Deloitte Foundation Professorship in Accounting thanks to support provided by the Quigley’s, with added support from Deloitte, through the Deloitte Foundation.

Each year, Beta Alpha Psi, the international honors organization for accounting, and the American Institute of CPA’s jointly sponsor the medal of inspiration, which is awarded to the one student whose life story is most likely to encourage others to reach within themselves and find “greatness.” This year they have chosen to honor Huntsman student A. Lucien Butler. The award was presented at the Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, and includes a $5,000 cash scholarship.

Rhett Hunt, an accounting faculty member at the Regional Campus in Vernal receives a grant for student internships. The purpose of the grant is to help strengthen relationships between local accounting firms and USU, improve employment opportunities for USU-RCDE accounting graduates, and increase the visibility of students who are ready to begin working full time in accounting.
