The prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) is similar among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and the general population, yet there is a disparity between treatment and outcomes for these two groups due to a lack of appropriately adapted treatment and staff training. The purpose of this case study was to examine how leaders in a behavioral health organization understand the engagement and training experience for staff who provide substance abuse treatment for individuals with ID/DD. Poor employee performance is detrimental to an organization’s success and may dictate a company’s failure. Therefore, business managers are concerned with developing employee performance because poor employee performance may dictate a company’s collapse. Grounded in Vroom’s expectancy theory, the purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to identify strategies business managers use to improve employee performance. The high turnover rates of entry-level employees adversely affect the profits of small retail businesses. Small business owners in Ghana may benefit by retaining entry-level employees and reducing replacement and training costs.
