Small and medium sized-enterprise managers are unable to effectively manage employees’ knowledgeability and innovation systems successfully, which results in negative firm performance. Managers who do not consider employee knowledge management and the benefits related to innovation systems experience financial hardships within the organization. Grounded in the unified model of dynamic organizational knowledge creation theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between knowledge management, innovation systems, and firm performance. The international knowledge management field has different ways of investigating, developing, believing, and studying knowledge management. Knowledge management (KM) is distinguished deductively by know-how, and its intangible nature establishes different approaches to KM concepts, practices, and developments. Exploratory research and theoretical principles have formed functional intelligences from 1896 to 2013, leading to a knowledge management knowledge science (KMKS) concept that derived a grounded theory of knowledge activity (KAT). Small business enterprises (SBEs) are significant contributors to business growth and employment in the United States, but despite governmental support, the failure rate of SBEs is high. Some small business leaders lack the critical management skills to detect or discover when underperformance in revenue-generation is due to gaps in organizational knowledge or business practices associated with managing knowledge assets.
