This qualitative narrative study explored the experiences of 10 women who worked in Corporate America and reported to female supervisors, and the perceptions they attached to those relationships with regard to their professional growth and career advancement. The main goal of the study was to understand how these women felt their female leaders either helped or hindered their climb up the corporate ladder. The Social Cognitive Theory of Gender Development and the narrative inquiry framework were used to shed light on the experiences reported by the female employees and how their gender and the gender of their supervisors may have …

Is The Provision Of More Timely Earnings Information Good For The Chinese Stock Market? : Evidence From Investor Reactions To Management Earnings Forecasts, Shunan Zhao Sep 2012

Is The Provision Of More Timely Earnings Information Good For The Chinese Stock Market? : Evidence From Investor Reactions To Management Earnings Forecasts, Shunan Zhao

Theses & Dissertations

Since 2001, publicly listed companies in China have been required by the Chinese Securities and Regulatory Commission (CSRC), the Shanghai Exchange and the Shenzhen Exchange to issue management earnings forecasts when they anticipate that earnings will be negative or change substantially from the previous period. This study examines the consequences and implications of this disclosure regulation. I find that the earnings forecasts are associated with an earlier incorporation of relevant earnings information into stock prices. However, I also find evidence that is consistent with the presence of overreactions to forecasts of extreme earnings changes. My study offers a cautionary note …

Ethical Climate, The Perceived Importance Of Ethics And Social Responsibility, And Earnings Management, Mo Lam Sep 2012

Ethical Climate, The Perceived Importance Of Ethics And Social Responsibility, And Earnings Management, Mo Lam

Theses & Dissertations

The practice of earnings management not only adversely affects the long-term economic prospects of a particular business enterprise by eroding public confidence in the company, but also may severely undermine the reputation of Hong Kong as an international financial and trading centre. Given the devastating effects of such practices resulting from corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom, earnings management has received unprecedented attention in the past decade. The incommensurability between the far-reaching effects of ethical issues relating to earnings management and the paucity of prior research on the subject in Hong Kong triggers my interest to study this topic. …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Firm Performance : Evidence From China, Ho Yin Wong

Determinants And Implications Of Audit Reporting Lags In China, Wei Luo May 2012

Determinants And Implications Of Audit Reporting Lags In China, Wei Luo

Theses & Dissertations

Timeliness is an essential attribute of corporate financial reporting as it affects the usefulness of information made available to external investors. The recognition that the length of audit is the single most important determinant influencing the timeliness of earnings announcements has motivated investigations on audit reporting lags in different countries. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research on this issue in China where the institutional environment for accounting and auditing practices is different from that of other countries. The growing interest in the Chinese stock market from domestic and international investors further increases the importance of this research. In this …

Socialization Tactics As Antecedents For Goal Interdependence And Newcomer Adjustment And Retention, Changhong Lu Jan 2012

Socialization Tactics As Antecedents For Goal Interdependence And Newcomer Adjustment And Retention, Changhong Lu

Theses & Dissertations

Serial (providing newcomer role models) and investiture (providing newcomer positive social support) tactics have been demonstrated as the most important predictors for newcomer adjustment. This study empirically examines the dynamics of serial and investiture tactics on newcomer adjustment and retention. It posits that goal interdependence between new recruits and their teams critically affects new recruits adjustment outcomes. This study adopts Deutsch’s theory of goal interdependence to understand when newcomers develop cooperative goal interdependence with their teams. It argues that serial and investiture tactics promote cooperative goal interdependence and reduce competitive goal and independent goal relationships and thereby result in newcomer …

Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Quality Assurance Problem In A Two-Echelon Supply Chain With A Retailer As The Quality Gatekeeper, Zaichen Li Jan 2012

Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Quality Assurance Problem In A Two-Echelon Supply Chain With A Retailer As The Quality Gatekeeper, Zaichen Li

Theses & Dissertations

We consider a two-level supply chain involving a manufacturer and a retailer who serves as the quality gatekeeper. The manufacturer determines a wholesale price and a defective rate and announces his decisions to the retailer, who then makes her decisions on the retail price and identification rate that means the percent- age of the defects identified by the retailer and reflects the retailer’s gatekeeping effort on her quality assurance. We accordingly develop a leader-follower game and solve it to find Stackelberg equilibrium for the manufacturer and the retailer. In order to examine whether or not the supply chain benefits from …

A Pleasant Surprise Or Injury Plus Insult? : Consumers' (Dis)Satisfaction With Recovery Strategies For Service Failure, Muyu Wei Jan 2012

A Pleasant Surprise Or Injury Plus Insult? : Consumers' (Dis)Satisfaction With Recovery Strategies For Service Failure, Muyu Wei

Theses & Dissertations

Dealing with service failure, one question is constantly asked: why certain consumers are still dissatisfied even though compensations are made? The effectiveness of recovery strategy has been discussed in the context of service failure paradox and second deviation in the past literature. In this thesis, these two issues were brought together under the same framework - from the perspective of expectation. We propose that expectation mediates consumers’ evaluation of recovery strategies, and leads to different levels of satisfaction and re-patronage intention. The expectation is further influenced by the type of resource spending consumers are reminded of and the failure type. …

Understanding Conflict Avoiding Behavior In China : The Role Of Goal Interdependence And Behavioral Intentions, Lin Wang Jan 2012

Understanding Conflict Avoiding Behavior In China : The Role Of Goal Interdependence And Behavioral Intentions, Lin Wang

Theses & Dissertations

It is a commonly held belief that people from collectivistic, large power distance or high-context cultures, such as China, tend to be less confrontational, which could be counter-productive in organizations. Contrary to this traditional view, this study posits that conflict avoidance can be constructive depending on the specific actions protagonists take. It adopts Deutsch’s (1973) theory of cooperation and competition to understand conflict avoiding behavior between employees and their supervisors, indicating that people’s perceptions of goal interdependence significantly influence their behavioral intentions that in turn predict their overt actions to avoid conflict. Specifically, it proposes that goal interdependence greatly affects …
